That kind of message is always there. Even on PS2 and all other CD or DVD-reading machines.
In fact, there are some DVDs that don't work on PS2 (not many, it's 10 or 20 out of a library of tens of thousands of titles available), like some don't work on Xbox or even some standalone players.

It's more down to the fact that some DVDs don't respect the full standards sometimes and have problems running.

Exactly. And more interesting is the thousands of playstation and playstation 2 games ... so they seem to continue taking backward compatibility very seriously ...
