New playstation site

maybe because i don't share the 'get extra at a bargain price' mentality? if i want just a bottle of water and it costs a buck i don't buy two just because they come at $1.75.

is it too much to expect a $500 console to come with wifi? no, i don't want the extra 40GB of disk space, nor the HDMI, nor the flash card reader.
There will be an adaptor for wifi if you want to buy it on it's own. Just like on the 360. So you can buy that single bottle of water if you like.

That's the dilemma though. Can't please all of the people all of the time - and I'm not deliberately tryiing to be disingenous here.

The "value", "bargain-icity" and all those other consumer concerns are such a varied mix. A company places their product on the continuum (of price v. built in features) and will inevitably find that not everyone's happy. Would it be more acceptable if it had wifi and no Blu-ray? Taking it the other way, we could have a less powerful console and find it suits our wallets just fine. But as a trainee geek & video-game fan I probably wouldn't even notice that console.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy paying over the odds for anything but in those instances as a consumer I vote with my wallet.

Basically I think discussions like this involve a whole load of unquantifiable's.

Not much, but some minor changes to the site.

http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/about.html
on the last question this has been updated...
"We are sticking with our philosophy of maintaining an open platform; the online basic services such as playing online games, accessing downloadable content, and staying connected with your friends online will be offered to PLAYSTATION 3 users at no charge"

http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/specs.html
On the specs page the difference between the two configurations are now in red. And oddly enough the Blu-ray 2x has been taken off the site with no number at all.

Yeah tell me about it.

Titanio pointed out the Backwards Compatibility part has changed as well.

10. Can I still play my PlayStation®2 games, DVD movie, and CD music collection on PLAYSTATION®3?

Yes, you can play thousands of PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 software titles as well as your DVD and CD collection on PLAYSTATION®3.*

* Some PlayStation 2 or PlayStation format software titles may perform differently on this system than they do on PlayStation 2 or PlayStation systems, or may not perform properly on this system. In rare instances, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs and other media may not operate properly when played on the PS3 system. This is primarily due to variations in the manufacturing process or encoding of the software. For more info, visit www.us.playstation.com.
So I suppose we wont be getting quite 100% but close to 100% BC. As Titanio put it, "Some" is a given, but how many is the question.
Guess it's something we will find out @ launch.

Yeah Sony was trying to tell us for months, but many didn't believe.
Because Sony has never said one thing and then done another? Let's time travel back before the spring launch, shall we?

On second thought, let's not.

Well, to be fair, name one big company that hasn't ever changed specs, launch plans, features etc of a big, important piece of hardware... :) MS does it all the time. It's part and parcel of the biz unfortunately, even the internet love-child that is google is most likely guilty on several counts.

On second thought, let's not.
:D

Very interesting. I was just in there the other day and they definitely listed the speed for the Blu-ray as well as the DVD. You have to wonder if the crazed Sony fanguy may have been onto something:
Q: How were load times?

Scrivener: Fast. Really fast. The Heavenly Sword demo was loading up in 4-5 seconds, which is even more impressive when you start to think about how much content it has to load off the disc. I did ask if they were using a standard 2x BRD but all I got was a creepy-ass "if I told you I'd have to kill you" smile. I suspect we may end up with the new 4x drives... but that's pure interpretive speculation on my part.
Honestly, it makes more sense to me that the guy gave him a strange look because they were using a DVD drive in the unit, but hey you never know. If Sony upped the Blu-ray speed that could remove one of the deficiencies they have in comparison to the X360.

Does Samsung, Sony or anybody else currently offer anything beyond a BRD2x?

I'm not sure. There are 4x burners I know of, so I'm not sure it would be impossible for a 4x reader. It is interesting though, with the whole loading times bit and why the number is no longer on the site. Personally, I can't imagine sony putting a 4x drive in the ps3, as it would probably cost a pretty penny. But you definately wont see me complaining if they do. ;)
