Having never played any of the first 3, were they half as corny as MGS4 looks to be? I think southpark's humor is more mainstream.
A few "in"-jokes and comical moments, like having that hated character from part 2 appear in the intro of part 3 under certain conditions. AFAIR you wont see any of those if you dont toy around with the game.

The MGS3 trailers had some weirdness you wont see in the game (ie some scenes were done purely for the trailer), I expect Part 4 to be the same.

There were a few other funny bits in MGS1 too.

Prison guard and his stomach problems

First time Meryl beats his ass and steals his clothes leaving him naked

Meryl blushing while watching her in first person view

Developers' ghosts

I am sure there are other funny bits in it but I cant recall them since its been years since I played it.

Wow, I remember the Prison guard bit but I can't recall any of the rest. I need to go back to that game some day.

The part were Meryl undresses the guard is exactly right after the first FOX die incident. I think it was the DARPA chief in a cell. Thats were you first met Meryl and she was dressed in enemy clothes. There is also the other guy naked and unconscious outside the cell with his privates censored. This is actually the prison guard. He got sick because he was left naked. I am sure you ll remember now

The others need experimentation. The Ghosts for example appear in certain sections. You have to take photos with the digital camera and store them. When you ll view the photos later you will see ghosts of some of the games developers. A place you can take such photos if I remember well is where the Ninja killed a bunch of soldiers
could be... i forgot i didn't even play the first, hehe. i've only played MGS2 and 3 (yeah i know i'm missing a lot of the story).
You can find all about the MGS1 story by reading MGS1 story record in MGS2. Its a long text to read but still a nice narrative of what happened in MGS1

what do you mean?

The trailer failed to get me interested in the game. I think it's a trailer or preview that only works for people who already have an interest in metal gear. Every time I see something about this game, I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I'd really like to see some gameplay. I'm not doubting this game could end up being the best game of all time. The trailers just aren't doing it for me.

Most of the humor seems to be thrown in at the end; I'd consider it more of an omake than an integral part of the game (i.e. the cutscenes you're shown in the beginning).

Yeah, some of that was pretty bad and cringe worthy. I also liked all the women and their corny cleavage attire .... especially, "Big Momma" .... ouch.

I almost stopped watching, when she said 'call me mama, big mama...' and I wish I had.

I rewatched the trailer to see what people are talking about. I'd call it typical Japanese humor. Nothing serious.

It's hard to target a different audience using the same game. This one will continue to be for fans and people who like the series.

MGS online, OTOH, may be able to address a different needs... depending on how they design it.

this is why i think its a good thing that they're ending the series. i mean, MG has gone way back to the original Nintendo days, its hard to attract new fans because the series is so long. but they did put all the MG games in MGS3 Subsistence IIRC.

MGS2 had probably the most wicked humour in there:

- Snake masturbating off to posters in the locker room (or at least you could do that in the demo)
- a guard peeing down the strut - walk under it for a shower and check the codec :)
- guard listening to walkman on full blast while on duty and dancing around with eyes closed

Loved the trailer - it may not be very amusing for non MGS insiders, but Kojima certainly knows how to stir interest with the fans of the series. The great thing is, it's not only looking to be a very real movie-esque experience, but at the very same time, it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a good game that's supposed to be fun and make you laugh.

What are you waiting for rookie? Shoot!
:D
Oh yeah exactly, you remember it :)

There should be a connection with MGS3 thats why you might not get that part. Those who playied MGS3 will remember Boss. Eva met Boss in MGS3 and she knew that the Boss was like a mother figure for Naked Snake.

i think they started bringing humor into the MGS series in MGS2.

the humour was always there , mgs though had bit of adult humour, from snakes sexist remarks, sarcasm and to his one liners like: You must be a real threat in the Muktuk eating contest etc.

mgs 2 had a few attempts at humour but failed miserably

mgs 3 had a few "in"-jokes and comical moments like some one said above, my fav was cardboard box and signit conversation.
