My my look what ATi is doing......

God I hope that whatever it is, it's not called RenderMonkey. That's got to be just about the stupidest name I've ever heard.

But, I've never been fond of ATI's PR names... (not that I like PR names in general...).

I agree with Nagorak - RenderMonkey is kinda cool. Doesn't take itself too seriously. I can see the headline, "A rendering tool so easy to use, even a monkey can do it!"

Yup, sounds like RenderMonkey to me, too. This year's Siggraph is going to be interesting anyway. Too bad I can't attend. *swears at company budget cuts* :(

And _I_ like RenderMonkey. RenderMonkey has it all:

RenderMonkey -> small brother of RenderMan (i.e. association)

RenderMonkey -> Code Monkey -> easy, fool-proof development for 3D applications

;)

But that's just it...this sort of thing should be taken seriously. Whatever it turns out to be, you'll not find me using anything that goes by the name of "RenderMonkey."

I think the name's meaning is the following.

Pixar has Renderman.
ATI has RenderMonkey. It's far from Renderman-like rendering quality but after the evolution of GPU's prorammability and the shading languages like RenderMonkey the two area (DCC and real-time rendering) will converge.

I like this name, it's more creative than Cg :)

Cg, on the other hand side, has its advantages, too:

- reminiscent of C and C++

- sounds technical and "serious"

- short and not easily misspelled ;)

marketing ahoy,

I believe what you really wanted to say was "But that's just it...this sort of thing should be taken seriously. Whatever it turns out to be, you'll not find me using anything that isn't by NVIDIA."

If something has serious content, people will use it regardless of its name or moniker. People with common sense, at least.

Was going to say something similar, but no need to now. ;)

Perhaps it can be considered quite a serious tool:

Last but not least I will only briefly mention our first glimpse at ATi's 3D development tool suite 'Rendermonkey'. This software can seamlessly be used as a plugin with any of the current 3D-development suites, generating vertex and pixel shader code. Rendermonkey is very comfortable to use by developers as well as artists and should make the development of titles that use vertex and pixel shaders a lot easier than it used to be so far. Additionally, ATi includes a compiler for Renderman and told us that another compiler for Maya is in the works. Rendermonkey will be available from ATi's website once it has officially been beta-released at SIGGRAPH next week and it will be free of charge.

The matter, really, is not whether if it is a "serious" tool or not in public forums such as this. That quoted term ("serious", i.e.) applies, and is considered, only to those who don't know what what Cg or Rendermonkey provides. To those that knows what Cg or Rendermonkey provides, it is neither "serious" nor "comical" (or some other such "derogatory" term) - it is there simply as an option for easier work to attain a certain goal.

People who regard "monkey" as a "comical" or "stupid" word or description hasn't really seen how much intelligence monkeys are capable of... nor looked at the mirror or followed science.

I know what you (maybe) mean, Wavey... I was hoping my comment helps with the deteriorating signal-to-noise ratio in this forum (even though it has grown quite a bit). Many folks don't know what they talk of.

I suppose I will have talk quite a bit when I come back with a NV30 and R300. Many folks here talk too much nonsense... understandable when they're excited wihtout knowing too many facts (about 3D) and re-live their teenage years.

Hehe ;)

Why am I not surprised? Your distain for ANYTHING ATI is so obvious. Again nvidia helping you finacially or what?

Wheeee!

All fanboys, go back to the hard forums, or whence you came!

(But, how come nobody's denouncing rendermonkey for being bad for the business?)
