Movie Reviews 2.0

The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus - for what it tries to achieve 9/10 but falls short as the story gets a bit muddy towards the end.
In typical Hollywood style there is a happy ending and the feel good factor is ever-present.
Loved the devil and Dr Parnassus, the rest were kind of "meh" with a good performance by Ledger at times but seriously... a shrine to lost actors? C'mon Depp/Gilliam... really?

I thought it was a load of shit, to put it lightly.

The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus 8/10
heath ledgers accent though was terrible, he does an english accent as bad as that other star in that show (johnny depp), then again a lot of ozzies cant do accents (blancett aside)

shutter island 4/10
perhaps the most obvious 'twist' since switchblade romance. Totally unbelievable plot, Also why did they film so many scenes in front of a greenscreen

I've just been to see "Paul".

Despite excellent reviews of the film from some of my family members, I was distinctly underwhelmed. Not a patch on Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. You could tell that Ed Wright wasn't involved and the script had been tailored more for the American market.

I'd probably award it 5/10 for the odd laugh here and there.

I need to start a Blu Ray collection. I want my first Blu Ray title to be Valhalla Rising, but I can't find it for sale anywhere other than amazon.com.

Is Rango in theaters, yet? I'd like to see that this weekend if it is.

It's been playing for a week here, but I haven't had the time to go :(
Opinions are mixed, one coworker thought it wasn't that good, another with more picky tastes said it's an 8/10. Both said it looks incredible, but one is the lead technical director and the other is the lead character rigger ;)

... I might be wrong, but are you by any chance grossly overweight? Just a feeling i got from your post :devilish:

Nope, im a normal weight. I lost heaps and kept it off.

I was replying to a "people would do well to" not a "people would be thin if" comment.

I exercise often and I'm not thin. I do it to be strong and for a healthy heart and to offset my drinking and eating habbits (I eat healthy but I like to eat too much and I eat in restaurants too much).

ahh + I never really consider exercise to be a route to weight loss I do it for health reasons personally and it seems you do too.

If you want to lose weight, a controlled diet is probably 2/3 of the battle and exercise 1/3. But to say exercise doesn't burn stored fat or increase your metabolic rate is silly. I'll show you a study that says you can eat McDs 24/7 and not gain weight.

You can eat McDs 24/7 and not gain weight! They do have much healthier options now. :p

You don't need to show me that study, just prove that the guy who just finished his exercise didn't just grab that second bagel for breakfast.

Whooops why am I doing this? I'll blame ya'll because it's 3 posts vs one of my own, yeah!

OT: Has anyone seen Red Riding Hood / Paul? I wanna know especially if Paul is good as I LOVE Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

See a couple of posts above for my review of Paul.

My parents and my sister and her husband both loved it. I thought it disappointingly average!

I heard an interview with Simon Pegg a couple of weeks ago where he admitted that the early scripts were changed a fair bit to be friendlier to the American market and this is no doubt much to the detriment of the film!

All IMO, of course.

Sad.... :(

I was so excited when I found it was coming out!

Just watched Fat Head and it confirmed my suspicions regarding "nutrition". 10/10

Finally got a chance to watch this. Excellant film. Now time to show it to a friend of mine who sometimes goes off on a rant about McDonalds due to Supersize Me and yet still pigs out at other fast food restaurants and regular restaurants. :D

I'm giving it a 9/10 only because he was a bit overly cheesy on some bits.

I've been wishing McDonald's would go back to frying their fries with beef fat for YEARS, and this finally gives me something to back it up with. :D

Regards,
SB

One thing I'm not sure that documentary mentions is that McDonald's has made significant changes after the public outcries regarding Super Size Me and the research on unsaturated trans fat. Might explain the changes in calorie content and health risks and such. That movie was made more than 7 years ago, things were quite different at that time.

Edit: according to Wiki McDonald's started to phase out trans fat in 2007.

The Inside Job. 10/10. From my direct exposure to the rating agencies at my previous job and how the "system" worked, it's spot on. Very highly recommended.

Unknown: 7/10. Not as good as Taken but Liam Neesom is a great. The rest of the cast could use a bit of help. A little long also.

On flights to and from China (so keep in mind they get a little editing):

RED - humorous, silly action. Good for killing time. 6.5/10
The American - dull and failingly sappy. 3/10
The Town - tense and a little creative. 7/10

Social Network - 7.5/10 Good movie, and if its goal was to make Zuckerberg look like a complete, immature little douchebag. . .mission accomplished.

Hobo With a Shotgun

This movie is like a Troma film in many ways, but far better crafted and much much funnier. It has all of the sleaze and low grade gore of a Troma film, but it stars Rutger Hauer! I mean, that's incredible! He does an amazingly good job at making the role funny, and maybe delivers one of the best B-flick performances I've ever seen. His delivery is pretty much A+.

The movie started as a fake trailer, winning a competition to screen at the start of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's "Grindhouse."

Very NSFW trailer follows, as well as the trailer for the theatrical film.

For the movie itself, man is it ever violent and gross, and it doesn't pull any punches. The best part is it had huge participation from the Canadian film industry. Tax money spent wisely.

It's a classic, and terrible at the same time. It's so bad its good. I can't give this one a rating, because it is for select tastes only. But seriously, the Plague are the coolest duo of villains in a long long time.

Yes. That's an important fact people forget about SuperSize me. The time at when it took place. Calorie awareness was not anywhere close to the buzz as it is today.

Also, the calories in/calories out was not a part of the SSM. It wasn't meant to be a get in shape diet or even proof of concept for calories in/calories out. Simply, the goal was to see what would happen to a person if they relied on McDonald's like fast food (back in those years) for their 3 meals a day. The Super Size bit him having to say yes, if asked to have his meal super sized certainly didn't help the calorie counting.

The most interesting part of SuperSizeMe wasn't the calories but the psychological effects he had from the diet change. FatHead is great and there's a lot to be had from it without referencing super size me.

Morgan Spurlock proved that if you eat a fuckton of food you get fat and feel bad.

He also proved that it's easy to obtain shitty, high calorie food at a low cost that is highly marketed and very convenient. It's clearly a problem still plaguing millions throughout the US.....

Staying healthy has always been expensive. Healthy and young too, although I wonder when growth hormones and such will be sold in average stores eventually. Apparently it's the hot stuff in Hollywood right now.

You should see the episode of 30 Days (Morgan Spurlock's tv show) where a guy tries to use an anti-aging program (hormone therapy) to regain his college-level swimming fitness. It is also an extreme experiment, and very scary.
