Movie Reviews 2.0

Megamind - 8/10. Really good, much better paced and funnier than Dispicable Me, great subdued performance from Will Ferrell (I wasn't sure it was even him till I read the credits - normally he's overacting out the wazoo). Somewhat predictable, but great animation all around, especially on the city and backgrounds. It probably helped that I recently read the novel of "Soon I Will Be Invincible".
Yes, saw that with the kids last weekend and enjoyed it. There were quite a few references in there for the older generation that would be entirely missed by the youngsters.

I've seen Tangled twice now at the cinema (2D first time out) and it's easily the best film I've seen this year (including Black Swan, The King's Speech, etc.). Hilarious, very well animated, very good looking, not too long and it clips along at an excellent pace. The story is a bit shallow (Rapunzel with a thin veneer of newness), but that's about it in terms of downsides.

Worth watching twice, since you'll spot so many little visual jokes and cues that make sense after the first watch. Pascal and Maximus make the movie for me, 10/10.

HERE COMES THE SMOULDER %{}!

Heard good things about it, and my wife saw a few bits on youtube that she really liked. We'll probably make it our next 3D movie (last one was Shrek Forever, which was good too by the way, and excellent use of 3D to boot)

My girlfriend (who, it should be noted, is an enormous Disney fan) raved about Tangled, as did my sister when she took her daughter to see it.

Personally, I'm too macho to go and watch it at the cinema so I'll wait until it is released on DVD. ;)

On the other hand. I just saw a really good movie that surprised the hell out of me.

The A-Team. 9/10. I went into this expecting a 4/10 or 5/10 considering all the other bad movies that were made from 60s/70s/80s TV series the past few years. But it was genuinely funny in the spirit of the A-Team TV series. I knocked off 1 point because I don't think the person they got to play BA really fits, then again it's hard to find someonoe that can pull off Mr. T. :p

SB

Surprised me too, really enjoyed A-Team the whole way through. I thought they each played their characters very well and the absurdities of the different action scenes were for once highly enjoyable and made me cackle with laughter rather than just rolling my eyes and sneering at the usual hollywood shit.

IIRC he president gets killed when he won't launch the nukes. There's only Salt and the other double agent left afterwards, and she kills him. That's why there's no one to back up her story.

You may be right, but
from what I remember he just got knocked out from a whack to the head.
Then again the movie is so bad I'm not even remotely interested in looking to see. :D

SB

Burlesque - 8/10. A total girly film, with a clichéd plot, but the meat of the movie is the stage numbers, where Christina Aguilera looks, sounds, and dances great. Even her acting in the rest of it is not bad at all. Guys stuck on the sofa with their girlfriends/wives won't be too bored with all the thrusting and grinding female flesh on show. It may not have much in the way of aspirations beyond the song and dance numbers, but it does that very well indeed, and is much better than I was expecting.

Look out for Kristen Bell as a brunette diva, Cher's solo number in the middle of the movie, and the five seconds you see Christina Aguilera getting ready for a night on the town in a rather amazing skintight gold mini-dress.

Invictus - not sure what to give it. It was interesting enough to watch, but it missed a certain something. Still good.

Despicable Me - 6/10 The plot somehow feels all too familiar. Nothing bad but not overly spectacular either.

Let Me In - 8/10 I'll add it to the list of horror films I finished watching. Don't typically enjoy horror film, but this one is interesting enough for me to finish watching it, and maybe watch the original too.

Blue Valentine 7/10 - it was alright. Didn't like the Ryan Gosling character much. I don't mean I wanted to be likeable, but that I didn't think he was very interesting. He was too much of a straight-forward shitty guy.

King's Speech: 10/10. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish.

Expendables: 4/10. I tried to hard to have 80's action film vibe but ended up just being a bit meh.

Tangled: 8/10. Quite fun. Not overly musical.

Invictus - not sure what to give it. It was interesting enough to watch, but it missed a certain something. Still good.

As a New Zealander Invictus was 0/10.

They obviously didn't want to sully the manifest destiny of the South Africans by showing the mighty All Blacks on the sideline puking their guts out. :devilish:

Saw the Other guys today. Tought it was pretty good, although pretty much only because of his magnificense Sir Will Ferrel. Mark Wahlberg was ok too. 3.75/5

Just watched Monsters. Thought it was very good. Can't believe that can be done on a $500,000 budget. And 1 guy did the effects

speaking of low budgets, Ink was quite good at about $250,000. I'd say 7.5-8 out of 10.

I Saw black Swan, bloody terible.

"I want the part"
"you must connect with your dark side"

portman has some strange dreams
puts on a great performance
the end...

Love & Other Drugs 6/10 - wife conned me into this via movies on demand, and fortunately she disliked it even more than I did. I at least had the benefit of seeing Anne naked in multiple scenes, but otherwise an utterly forgettable movie.
