Movie Reviews 2.0

I see Tarantino as a supreme junk food of movie makers. Ever see kids mix all the soft drinks in one or sprinkle all kinds of candy over cake and ice cream whilst eating Cheetos? It's decadence that makes you a bit sick to your stomach afterwards.

I quite liked Pulp Fiction and many of the scenes in Inglorious...

For the record, I loved Pulp Fiction and also a bunch of his other work. He needs really strong actors to pull and carry some of his work though and when these fail to deliver, tbinvs fall apart quickly. In this case though there was little to be done and it wasn't all to blame on the actors as the script just wasn't good enough. imo of course.

I just watched Undisputed III again just now (missed the beginning last time) and am almost embarrassed to say I really enjoyed it. It is almost like a really good Tekken movie. Very well made and some (not all) quality acting. 8/10 (again, for this genre).

In the same vein, I also saw Li Pan (again), which I didn't like as much even if it sports my favorite fighting style. Maybe I am spoilt by Fist of Legend, which had such an awesome battle between Jet Li and a Japanese friend of his old master. This just was so flat in comparison. 6.3/10.

I like pulp fiction ok, but I liked lots of other movies more. Having things in a different order was not mind blowing to me.

Tarantino's best are IMO his earliest. Jackie Brown > all, IMO, then pulp, then Reservoir. Then again, I haven't seen all his movies, so maybe I shouldn't be so dismissive, but this is how I see it with my current level of experience anyway. :)

Why would you watch a film about ballet
What a campy-looking picture you picked.

As for your question, have you seen Billy Elliot?

Then there are the quasi-Tarantino movies like True Romance where he wrote the script and worked with the director but didn't actually direct. His first 4 (TR, RD, PF, JB) are still his best.

I liked from Dusk till Dawn as well. I also enjoyed Kill Bill (reminded me of Hard to Kill), and although it wasn't brilliant, I still appreciate that a film like Death Proof is out there ...

I generally appreciate Tarantino - I just hated Inglorious Basterds. I think it is perhaps similar to the effect of Death Proof - the first response to the movie when people saw it (and I imagine in the U.S. in particular) is that he made this Jewish dream-revenge film and it is so graphic, over the top and complete. The idea of the movie is better and more appealing (to some at least) than the quality of the movie itself. These things generally show themselves with repeat viewing.

Excellent, excellent flick.
Yeah! It's one of those movies I can just watch over and over and not get tired. I'm roughly same age as Billy the character (not Jamie Bell the actor), a few years older perhaps, so I'm a kid of the same era. Of course, this is a very regional picture as far as the setting and millieu is concerned; Sweden had very little in common with northern England during the Thatcher era in general and the coal miners' strike period in particular. Even the music is foreign to me as I was much more of a europop/early techno than the punkish sound featured throughout. Still, the tunes suits the movie perfectly, I can't imagine it any other way!

Was the first movie with "fuck" as every other word that I had my (then rather young) kids watch.
Now now, don't exaggerate... There's about as many "twat" as there's "fuck" in that movie, and there's still plenty room for regular words too!

Speaking of age, I work with this guy who's 31 and he likes That 70's Show. His jaw hit the ground when I told him I'm only 3 years younger than the characters portrayed in the series.

I guess with Geo essentially gone, you must be the official old man here eh? I've never watched the show (other than a snippet here or there) but it says on wiki that they were teenagers in 1976. I wasn't a "teen" ager until 1980 so that makes you 45. Whew. I don't have to give up games yet since I'm not the oldest person I know who still plays.

Regarding Billy Elliot, did anyone else think that Jamie Bell was, well, a bit of a shit dancer? Looked like Bambi on ice to me.

I'm 46 now, turn 47 later this year.

Jamie Bell's apparantly a very accomplished dancer from reading his bio, coming from a family of performers IIRC. If he looked like Bambi on ice, that's merely a compliment to his acting ability, as his character is just a beginner, and initially a reluctant and throughout most of the movie, a downtrodden one.
