Movie Reviews 2.0

We (family of four) watched Amsterdam a year ago, it left all of us somehow underwhelmed. Can't really pinpoint it but it felt a bit like toned-down Baz Luhrmann style stuff.

Everybody liked Knives Out, as well as most Poirot-movies of recent years we have wathced. See How They Run was a bit like Amsterdam - did not quite get the mix of crime mystery and quirkyness right for us.

Then again wife and I like Only Murders in the Building.

Fair enough. I don't watch all that many crime mysteries, so my tastes probably aren't as discerning as yours.

I enjoyed Knives Out a lot. It was a perfect, cozy Christmas film to watch with the family. Glass Onion was a bit of a damp squib, however, because Rian Johnson went full Rian Johnson: "I shall deconstruct this genre film for I am le artiste" thereby proving that "deconstruction" is often just a synonym for "breaking" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've not watched See How They Run. I just checked it out on JustWatch and I dig the cast, at the very least. It might be my kinda thing given that I enjoyed Amsterdam.

Anyone else watch Godzilla Minus One? It's been nominated for a VFX oscar so likely to end up back in cinemas. I thought it was a tremendous film. I'd have been really surprised if I'd not heard good things about it beforehand.

It was made for less than a tenth of any blockbuster you'd care to mention, not least the naff Legendary Godzilla films. It looks fantastic and the action is actually exciting. As a post WW2 Japan story it's interesting and surprisingly affecting.

The soundtrack, with its rearranged Godzilla theme, is an absolute belter.

Eagerly waiting for it to come out on digital but no news yet. Wasn’t easy to find a cinema playing it in London.

Heard good things about Godzilla Minus One yes, not seen it yet though.

I watched the Wonka thing: meh.
Only good or memorable song was the one thats the old Oompa Loompa song with new words, plot was boring, characters dull & involved altogether too much public magical flying stuff.
Also rewatched the original: remains one of the alltime, unbeatable, timeless greats

(If I didn't mention it a couple of months back) Speaking of alltime greats: Laurence of Arabia in 4k is phenomenal.

Rebel Moon: also in the very meh bucket, can see how it could make part of a good trilogy if the next two fill things out.
Super obviously needs a longer cut with the gore thats missing along with a lot of the plot.
Saw a lot of hate on the basis of its derivativeness: On the one hand Star Wars similarly famously and openly copies a lot of stuff from eg Kurosawa, WWII aerial battles etc.
On the other hand Star Wars does it with a unique and interest piquing twist that is completely lacking from Rebel Moon.

Napoleon: also meh.
There is a foundation that is very well done but if you're doing Napoleons' entire career it really needs to be done in 3 movies I think:
Rise culminating in Austerlitz
Empire taking through to triumphal entry to Moscow
Fall with the retreat from Russia through to aftermath of Waterloo.

That disappointment led me to Bondarchuks' War & Peace: (Mosfilms youtube has it in 4k with english subtitles) also phenomenal, its 7 hours split into 4 parts o_O
Like Kubrick he hasn't tried to be historically accurate with the battles but they have a real sense of scale that Kubrick doesn't & conveys the emotions of the 'narrating' characters as in the book.

Just watched the last Indy movie.
I went with admittedly very low expectations, since I heard mostly bad things for the movie.
I was pleasantly surprised, it was not bad at all.
It wasn't great, but I could see it battling it out with Temple of Doom in the long run.
Definitely, at least for me, not in the "Does not exist" category.
That is reserved for "The crystal skull"...

Yeah we watched ToD after it as a reference and everyone agreed ToD was objectively really bad. It has nothing else but nostalgia going for it.

When Evil Lurks was excellent. A truly horrifying, gross, and Godless film.

Don't watch if you're in the middle of a sweaty depression spiral though - it's rough.

There's Snyder Cut in the works, longer and rated R.

There's a Ridley Cut in the works at over 4 hours long.

I watched Anyone but you in the cinema. Pretty OK rom-com with good looking people and nice scenery (Sydney) and around. Also a lot of cleavage and shirtless males.

its all about dune part 2, got my ticket for feb 28th, while the wiki says it premieres march 1st? im not complaining

Skinamarink
Superb horror by someone who understands the best horror is in your mind not blood & chicken bits.
Watch at night in the dark with your back to an open door while you're the only person in the house at your own risk!

The guy has a youtube channel where he has a bunch of horror shorts before & the one Heck is very similar in plot & creepiness, haven't watched others, maybe tomorrow during the day...
