Movie Reviews 2.0

By coincidence I saw the hangover yesterday as well 6/10
It had the makings of a good film then petered out after about 15minutes. Due to the makers not really wanting to offend anyone + also wanting to give the film a happy ending. eg take the rotund character they could of gotten his charcter into some much more interesting crazy situations but choose not to, btw WTF was mike tyson doing in the film!
the film had a similar premise to very bad things 6/10 though very bad things is slightly a better film

I did see a good comedy about a month ago
underground 9/10 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114787/

The Bluray version we rented did have the unrated version, though I don't know the exact difference. Though I suspect some of the pictures at the end were, as one was definitely xxx rated (got a nice chuckle out of us). I suspect the internet will have the exact difference somewhere. I'd give it a 7/10 at least.

EDIT: (this is talking about The Hangover)

There were plenty of bullets and people surviving ridiculous events. It was updated a bit in that there was some dead dudes, but most were hit in knees and so forth.

I watched Star Trek again for the third time, my wife hadn't seen it yet and it was on again at a convenient time. Although I wanted to do some work in the meantime, I ended up watching it again from start to finish. It stands up to being rewatched very well, I liked it.

it doesnt matter, arwin i respect you taste + u could tell something was not right with that film (but couldnt put your finger on it) hell I cant articulate myself

Star Trek I dont know there are a few shows that stand the test of time
star trek
twilight zone (night gallery, which I love personally is better )
monkey
the goodies
the simpsons (esp the first few seasons)

Yeah, it had potential of being a classic, but somewhere it fell short just a little. But I still liked how it left a lot of spaces open that were only filled in at the very end by the stills on the digital camera.

Sorry if I was unclear, I meant the latest Star Trek movie.

I recently watched the Star Trek again. It felt better now, because it disappointed me in the theather. Still at best it's an ok pop corn flick, but I like my Scifi movies with little bit deeper plot/script/events. The Nero "I'm sooo angry" character and his childish illogical motivations were a really bad engine for the story.

And
How is there only 10000 left in the Vulcan race?, you'd think they have more stationed in their space ships, let alone in colonised planets. Why is undefended drill able to drill a hole in your planet considering it only took a few phaser shots to be destroyed?!

Well the old Spock was good and the new Spock looked the part.

I enjoyed it, good pacey film, great casting, nice comedic moments, but lots of things annoyed me.

1) *hate* *hate* *HATE* the camera light flare thing they did throughout it, it makes ZERO sense, is detracting, and once you notice it, you can't get away from it.
The special feature section had a interview with someone or other (Abrams ?) that said he couldn't get over how cool it was.....WHAT ?

2) He couldn't come up with a story line that didn't involve basically wiping out everything that went before ? (yeah I know its an alternative timeline, but really it just feels like 30 years of Star Trek history was eliminated in seconds). Of course it doesn't matter to people coming at it from fresh, but it was surely NOT impossible to have a storyline that was both good for 1st time franchaisers, and also long termers.

3) Messed around too much with Spock's (new spock) personality.

I saw the A-Team and thought it was pretty awesome action movie. If the sole reason you want to see it is to see the same old actors with exact same personalities you will likely be dissapointed but if over the top action is what you liked in the series the movie should be perfect for you.

No love for Inception yet? I thought it was terrific, although you have to be alert to follow it in the 2nd half. The way it unravels.....well, I thought it was epic personally, and very well done. Nolan's got a keen sense of when and how to deploy CGI in his films, too.

Lots of similar stylistic cues as The Dark Knight too (the audio in particular), and a good few actors from that movie too.

Loved it.

Saw Toy Story 3 with the family last night and it had something for all ages. (As it managed to keep Master 2 y.o. interested enough to keep his 3D glasses on it must be good!)

Oy, that's impressive! I doubt my 2 y.o. would manage that, but I could try ... (he only turned 2 in May though)

Inception is coming out here this week I believe. I don't see many movies in the cinema these days, home cinema has taken over even before the little one, but since the little one I think we managed to go there twice (both 3D movies).

Almost forgot about this one:

Four Lions: 8/10

A comedy about suicide bombers surely can't work, can it? It can if it is directed by Chris Morris and written by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain.

Funny but also chilling at times, despite the buffoonery of some of the bombers.

I watched this film when I was at Glastonbury last month and my biggest problem was not laughing too much as I needed the toilet so desperately and there was nowhere to go in the cinema tent!

One thing though, it is set in Britain with British characters and has British writers and a British director. I have a feeling that the humour in this film may be somewhat British in its outlook!

Brazilian movie time...
Saw City of God and Central Station the other night... two very different movies and both of them amazing. Do yourselves a favour and watch them.

Im actually agreeing with robertr1 on a movie issue (mark that in the calender)
no characters in that film were likable
btw - theres a good doco included with some versions of the dvd

We rented Sherlock Holmes last night, was decent enough, but fairly forgettable: 7.5/10. I personally thought Downey Jr's accent, though pretty good, wasn't fully convincing, but that's partly because he's playing next to someone with one of the 'prettiest' accents in the business. I particularly thought that perhaps too little attention was paid to proper intonation, though that's a common mistake. There was a short piece on it in the extras that actually gave some background, showing him working with a consultant. Considering that he had a dedicated consultant to help him with it, I was surprised that he didn't pay more attention to intonation more. Perhaps they considered that to be too ambitious - it's not easy to do that kind of thing and still act (also something they discussed).

I thought it was interesting to see such a physical Holmes and Watson, which didn't bother me as much as I expected. Blackwood was surprisingly forgettable, there were some lesser characters that did his part better. McAdams' character Irene was below average, as she seems to be often in movies. I think she's fairly pretty, filling that 7 of 9 void, so to speak (would have liked to see her more instead of McAdams), but she has quite a lot of 'room for growth' as an actress.

Considering that the movie was fairly well received compared to some other movies, I'm guessing that Ritchie managed to tailor this movie to a younger and also more American audience, so in that sense he probably did a good job.
Kudos for not making Morairty the main villain here.

Yes, but certainly set it up for the sequel that is sure to come. :p And the ending from what I remember strongly hints that he was behind everything in this first movie.

Regards,
SB

The way I saw it, Moriarty was only behind Irene's involvement, using her to get at the remote control detonator by keeping Holmes involved and at the end distracting him so that he had time to get the device. That seemed to be all he was interested in in this movie, but his success in obtaining that device is then the next case that Holmes starts working on before the credits roll.
