Movie Reviews 2.0

Watched Deadpool yesterday. It was alright. Certainly loved the bloody fight choreography. The film also acknowledged that strip clubs aren't quite the puritan joints from the show Married With Children, and that's also much appreciated. Mostly I loved the back and forth banter between Ryan Reynolds and Morena Baccarin. You know, the place in the movie where the writing was actually good. Otherwise the film was mostly a neverending barrage of of one liners; once more we have a comic book movie where nobody ever talks like a human being. I also thought the film was a but icky in how self congratulatory and smug it was. Good job realizing that professor Xavior is portrayed by two different actors in the X-Men movies, Deadpool. Sooooo clever. There's nothing more cheap and easy than reference-based humor if you ask me. And please, if you're gonna comment about whether it's more sexist to fight or not to fight a woman, would you please not chicken out when push finally comes to shove?

My benchmark for violent comic book movie adaptations remains Dredd 3d, and if I'm after something a bit more humorous I'd rather rewatch Guardians of the Galaxy or Antman.

On that note, Screen Junkies did a top 9 R-rated comic book adaptions and Dredd was #1. Have to agree as well.

2 weeks & counting. Anybody bought tickets for Batman v Superman yet? I have, seeing it with my son in Imax 3D on Thursday the 24th. Can't wait!

P.S. I'm not much of a Marvel fan, but I did see Deadpool with son as well. We both loved it.

Got my tickets! IMAX 26th March and I cannot freaking wait. The final trailer really psyched me up again, after the so-so Doomsday reveal...

Really looking forward to this as well. Kinda bummed I have to wait for the home release in order to experience the film in its R-rated glory, though.

Well, they said the R-rated version was planned before Deadpool was ever released. But yeah can't wait for that either.

That's good to hear, instead of being stuff tacked on later because of Deadpool

Well, she has proven her Mary Sue qualities in SW already, and unlike in an ensemble piece like Star Wars, this isn't gonna hurt Tomb Raider because that's always been the character of Lara Croft in a nutshell anyway.

I think she looks a little too delicate and child-like for the role, though. I'd prefer someone like Eva Green or Emily Blunt.

Watched Mockingjay Part II recently. It was almost insufferably boring. Had to wash it down with some American Ultra, which was loads of fun. The Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Steward couple was just as convincing here as it's been in Adventureland, even though the two films couldn't have been more different.

Agreed on Mockingjay Part 2, was horribly boring and seemed like everyone involved just wanted to be done with the series. I actually quite enjoyed Hunger Games and Catching Fire especially, but the last 2 were rather mediocre. I have a newfound respect for Jennifer's acting skills though.

As far as Daisy for Tomb Raider is concerned, I think she'd be a good fit. She was actually one of the only redeeming qualities of Force Awakens imo.

Anyway, I just watched Zootopia and Kungfu Panda 3. Zootopia is very nice, especially the story part. It felt like a kids movie at first, but it turns out as a kids movie with enough depth that adults might enjoy.
Kungfu Panda 3 is like the previous movie in the series. More of the same. Simple story and relied heavily on simple jokes (which I don't mind). The biggest problem is that the final fight wasn't interesting, felt anti climactic. The most spectacular fight in the movie, Imo, happened in the beginning of the movie. Hey, personally I think it is still better than Mockingjay.

A Mary Sue (or Harry Stu or some equivalent name for a male character) is a character that is very idealized or perfect, usually as some sort of fictional version of the author or the author's wish-fulfillment.

It's a character description more so than a quality of an actor (if the actor isn't the one writing), since it's more of an observation of the writing for the character than the performance. It can vary between writers and stories, since being perfect or superior can be contextual.

Mary Sue is a term for a character (can be both male and female) who's a young, idealized, and inexplicably better at just about everything. Usually it's an author-insert coupled with wish-fulfillment.

Kung Fu Panda is one of those rare kind of movies that if they actually kept going and make sequel after sequel, I'd see all of them. They're harmless, fun and funny enough.

DR is too skinny to be an, erm, 'classic' Lara Croft. When you consider that even Angelina Jolie required some 'assistance' in the wardrobe department for her movies, I can't really see DR in the role. If she is cast in the role, expect plenty of wailing and gnashing of teeth from the interwebs. ;)

That said, I can't really see the point in another TR movie either. For Pete's sake, try to write something original, Hollywood!

Agreed about Mockingjay II - I couldn't work out if it was more boring than dumb or more dumb than boring. It was a close-run thing either way. A real disappointment as I thought the earlier movies were very well done. Dunno, perhaps the books had run out of steam by the end of the trilogy as well?

I do think Jennifer Lawrence is an excellent actress. Unlike many in the trade, she can actually carry off different personalities/looks/characters extremely well. Compare and contrast the Hunger Games films with her roles in American Hustle or Silver Linings Playbook. It was like watching different actresses in each film.

I think Daisy looks Perfect for a young Lara Croft. Which, if you think about it, is what the movies will go for. The latest and very successful games have told the story of young Lara finding herself and her inner mass murderer. The movies are bound to go for that storyline, with a younger looking Lara.
The Angelina versions really should be forgotten. It was tacky at the time and are uber tacky now.
