Movie Reviews 2.0

in here, we do not "respect" the cop. We "fear" them and making joke of them after bribe them cheaply and scold our friends if bribe too much and praise our friends if can get out without bribery but tell them its a waste of time (because you need to go to the law office the next few weeks, must pay, cant dispute at all to the judge). Fortunately its getting better since this last 5 years
yeah Ive been there a couple of times (I went there during the fall of suharto in 1998, didnt even leave the airport terminal before someone wanted a bribe :), at the time 15,000 rupiah = 1US :) most exciting time to go in a crisis, I'ld love to be in ukraine now )

i have seen the raid 1 and the raid 2.

Is the second one just like the first? I was really looking forward to seeing the first one, but after about an hours worth of fisticuffs I just found it insufferably dull. 'T was like watching someone play Double Dragon, cheesy, protracted 2-on-1 boss battles and all.

Grall needs to watch Snowpiercer. If the science and reality of Gravity caused him such an aneurysm, I think his head will explode at the train.

CA2 was indeed good fun, very well directed action scenes that rely mostly on stunt work with fights and car chases. Some nice characterization too, and I also liked the more serious tone and main plotline; however my friend thought it was a bit too obviously reflecting on recent events -
Snowden and the NSA scandal

However I didn't like how the movie
wasn't really about the Winter Soldier, but something completely different instead - and so he was just a secondary character who's story didn't even end and will have to be told in another movie.
And also the reveal of
Hydra - having them behind everything to me was a bit too cheesy.
I understand that Marvel comic fans may consider this to be a cool twist, but to me it ruined the serious tone it tried to build up, significantly. It would have been much better if Pierce was "just" a really corrupt person, instead of a fanatical follower of the Red Skull and his plans for world domination.

Very much looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy now...

Oh and talking about Marvel stuff, Agents of Shield has finally started to become what it was supposed to be from the start. Apparently they were playing a sort of long con with the viewers, misdirection and red herrings and all, making you think the grand story was about
Coulson's resurrection and some previously unknown small evil
. The characters and their relationships were also looking like some run of the mill stuff, and basically all the viewers from the casuals to the Whedon fans were starting to get bored.

Then boom, they've managed to turn the tables with the reveal of the true premise. Everything makes a lot of sense now and things are much more interesting.

It's so sad that they had to wait so long to sync it with the events of the cinematic universe, because it might be too late now, too many lost viewers all. I can only hope that Marvel's weight manages to keep it on the air for a second season. Maybe the season finale can create enough buzz and the show can also leverage CA2's success...

Same with pacific rim (watched that last nice) del toro's worst film

edit - I tell I lie (2nd worse) I reviewed his films and my ratings of how good they are, excellant director btw
though pac rim was some cliched story told with a unbelievable CGI wankfest (though I failed I thought he would be dead and she would give him mouth to mouth to resuscitate )

hehe just thinking of that scene underwater with the beast roaring like a lion (above ground) and thinking from an early $2 budget film doing the same with sharks obviously as a joke and here we have this happening in a megamultimillion dollar film, youve gotta laugh. The whole film was filled with stuff like this. CGI was good though :)

9/10 Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
8/10 Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) // yada yada
7/10 The Devil's Backbone (2001)
7/10 Cronos (1993)
7/10 Hellboy (2004)
5/10 Blade II (2002)
5/10 Pacific Rim (2013)
4/10 Mimic (1997)

You have a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters and you get hung up over the underwater sound effects? This is why nerds can't have nice stuff. Pacific Rim knocked your grandmother's diaphragm off its shelf, it was that fucking good. :)

@zed
what were you doing in indonesia at that nighmarish time lol :D
btw the dollar nowadays is still high. About 12000 rupiah = 1 dollar. and all kinds of things is super cheap/free here. Free TV channels for sports etc, free to do many things on public space (have you tried to play soccer in the middle of road? Its awesome :p )

@captainamerica?
i have not watch the 2nd, my brother says the movie is better than the 1st. But he also says that he realized the captain america clothing is not america flag. o_O

There was 100s of things wrong with that film, prolly gives the film 2012 a run for its money as the most bollux film made. My main complaint though is was it was just baddly written, maybe waiting 5 years between films del toro lost his touch a bit?

I will watch with interest:

How to Train Your Dragon 2 with world premiere on June 20, 2014;
The Expendables 3 with world premiere on August 15, 2014.

Could this possibly be worse than Expandables 2? I mean Expandables 1 was OK in a sort of silly but rubbish way, EX2 just dispensed with the silly and doubled down (I believe that's the Hollywood term) on the rubbish.

I actually really enjoyed both films. I had to completely turn off any part of my brain that judges the validity or scientific accuracy (if that can even apply) and focus on the way the visuals and action was presented.

For example Pacific rim was much better than transformers for big robot battles because there wasn't that constant angle changing, motion blur and plain mess visually. The "cameras" stayed on their angles far longer and you could get engrossed in the action more.

Just saw Captain America 2.
Very good job Marvel.

I thought it was reasonably well done and quite enjoyed it. Certainly better than Thor 2.

As always, the plot was a bit too predictable due to the casting. As soon as you see a big name actor such as Robert Redford in a supporting role (and an apparently friendly one at that), you just know that he's the bad guy and it is just a matter of time waiting to see when he will show his true colours!

7/10 The avengers. First 8 but downgrade my rating to 7. The acting was so so,esp for such famous names. Nice to see jenny agutter in it for about 3 secs. Weak story, totally without tension. Action films are meant to be about suspense aren't they someone should of told the director/writer of this. The action doesn't let up at all which is good fit short attention spanned people like myself ;) but I would prefer shorter bursts of better action myself. Also lots of the one liners were jokes out of 80s action movie. Also watched human centipede 2 today and contrary to avengers it gets better with thought. Though also a seven. First I thought it was a cop out not showing anything but it's definitely good writing to sustain the film for that length and the main actor not speaking at all. Could you do a super hero film with that. Hulk? But Bruce Jenner speaks plenty

Just got back from watching the new Spiderman movie and thought it was simply rubbish.

I remember quite enjoying the last one (though my memories of the plot are a little hazy, to say the least!), but thought the new one was just nonsense, almost from the off.

Bad plot, bad dialogue, bad acting. The Marvel films of late have been much more considered than this so it was a real let down for me.

Bear in mind that this is not a 'Marvel' (studios) film, and is not part of the Marvel Cineverse. This was licensed to Sony by Marvel Entertainment before Marvel Studios set out on making films.

I thought the first was pretty poor compared to the previous trilogy so it doesn't surprise me that the sequels as bad or worse. Also doesn't surprise me that its made by a different studio to the other marvel films considering how awesome they've been.
