Midway has no love for 360

Speaking to TheStreet.com, David Zucker, Midway's CEO, spoke about the company's support for next generation consoles. Midway don't plan to release any games for the Xbox 360 launch, but do plan to launch some games for the PlayStation 3 at its launch. While some people may see this as a sign of their favoured platform, it doesn't appear to be anything more than a time issue, with the Xbox 360 due in a few months and the PlayStation 3 not due until at least a year from now.

"To really maximise, to get the performance out of some of the games, it's going to take some time to do that. And we want to make sure we're launching high-quality titles," said Zucker. Midway announced that they will be using Epic's Unreal Engine 3 for a lot of their next generation development, an engine that has been proved to work wonderfully with both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Epic showed off the fabulous looking Gears of War for the Xbox 360 at E3, and a stunning demo of the Unreal Engine 3 was shown during Sony's pre-E3 conference

I wonder how many other companies will think like this.

1) What are Midway expected to release?
2) If they're using UE3, why not launch cross platform and maximise the market. Sounds like a really dumb choice to me. Especially if when PS3 launches there'll already be maybe 5-6 million XB360's out there and 0 PS3s!

They didn't say that they won't release cross platform titles, only that they won't release any launch titles with the xbox360. I imagine that they'll release a couple of games for the PS3 launch, but they will be featured on both platforms.

Heheh, ok Midway... I can't remember the last time I played a high quality game that you made!

They did say time was an issue, hard to get a quality product slapped together by November, platform power differences weren't the issue expressed IMO. To get the most ouf of any of these units necessitates a longer development time, so its more advantageous to hypothetically ship the same product to both companies for different reasons at the same time, one to get preexisting owners of 360 interested and the other to make it a compelling need to buy PS3 at launch.

There is not a single thing in there to suggest Midway either don't plan to develop for or flat out don't like X360, quite the opposite in fact. All that is said in that article is that they want more time to work on next-gen consoles and don't plan to have anything ready by X360 launch time.

Mcmas: You wondered in another thread why people thought you might be biased, look at this threads title and then the content of your quote...

Okay, so Midway games won't be avaialble for LAUNCH on XB360, but the LAUNCH titles for PS3 will also be available for XB360 months after it's been out. THAT makes sense!

It was a creative title nothing else. It seems like sometimes you have to have a catchy title to get people to read something. And about my comment I was wondering how many other companies are feeling the sameway Midway is.

Think about it if devs feel like they won't have enough time to launch a game for the 360, yet feel like Spring of next year is better than that is saying something. When you here people stating that MS is launching too early people defend them saying "They want to beat Sony to the table" or "They want to hit the Christmas season". While those two reason are acceptable this reason right here with Midway is a negative. You have to report both sides of the story. There is a good thing about coming out too early and a bad thing.

Well depending on how the ps3 launches (World wide , na first , japan first ) there may be up to a years timeafter the x360 hits before the ps3 hits here a . Which i would hope would be more than enough time for them to port a game to the x360 . The games they produce haven't been top notch for awhile so i would expect them to shovel it onto every console they can (Esp if its cheap to do ) to make the most amount of money

There is a lot of difference between a "catchy title" to entice people in and a title that suggests something contrary to the content of the article.

Yes and no, they might not have as launch games as otherwise possible, but they are already suggesting there will be a fair number of games out at and around the period of launch and I personally believe Microsoft both need and can make good use of some uncontested sales time where they are the only next gen system on the market. Ultimately I think it will do them more good than harm, though I do acknowledge your point.

Well I will agree to disagree with you here. :)

Well they did make Mortal Kombat Deception and The Suffering. Both games were pretty good and would be great next gen titles. Also Blitz: The League and Unreal Tournament 2007 will probably be pretty good also.

Don't be such a F-boy please. All platforms start at zero at launch, nothing new there, nothing to make any big deal out of.

PS3 will launch much later than X360, of course it makes sense they would have more time to develop titles for a platform that launches later in time. Why wouldn't it?

actually Midway has been on a roll for the last year or so. they have released great titles including the RPG of 2004(Shadow Hearts Covenant). Future titles look promising.

Huh? I've been called a f-boy for some dubious reasons before, but this time seems the most ridiculous of any!

My question was why wouldn't Midway provide launch titles for XB360 but they will for PS3, especially if they're using an engine that runs on both platforms.

The answer as I twigged was that they feel they haven't time to meet the launch window for XB360. By the time they've finished their games it'll be launch window for PS3. Hence the explanation of their statement.

How on earth does that make me a f-boy? :?

Does anyone have any love for Midway these days?

I mean they've been keeping a low profile for ages, they're not exactly a big player anymore.

Boobies lead to Selket. Selket leads to Unreal Championship 2. Unreal Championship 2 leads to Midway. And Midway leads to love.
