Microsoft Xbox Series X|S Storage Cards

Xs use standard CF express slot. But they whitelist it to only for certain WD model.

So when using m2 to CF express converter, require the specific WD ssd model.

Btw does this means it will be the exact same as the Seagate branded card? As that one use WD ssd inside them

Was hoping to pick a card up for a present.
But has the price cuts happened in uk?
Amazon didn't seem particularly cheaper to me, or is that it.

It's still $150 for the segate on amazon us

Maybe on the 11th prices will change ?

I remember saying I expect the price to drop pretty quickly after launch because it was crazy high.
Also expected a year exclusivity deal and after for there to be competition.
Talk about being wrong all the time.

This still isn't cheap enough, but all things considered RRP at launch better than what they could've gone for.
So finally a semblance of competition and hopefully some decent sales to come.

One thing to keep in mind. WD does premium pricing for gaming branded external SSDs.

Their latest P50 Game Drive (for PC, Xbox and PlayStation) retails for...
  • 1 TB - 199.99 USD
  • 2 TB - 349.99 USD
I'm going to guess this is because of limited competition and volume for external SSD drives, as their NVME drives which have more competition are lower priced.

So, it's actually fairly surprising that their XBS console expansion SSD is actually as cheap as it is even if it's still overpriced compared to NVME drives.

I'd be interested to see Crucial (Micron) release a compatible expansion drive.

SB

so another $50 dollars less, and does it even enter the range of a competitive price point?
Nope, needs to come down $100 more to catch https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=179_4229&item_id=214598 if this is on sale. $30-50 dollars less to be equal at MSRP it seems like

The price is certainly much better but it does need to come down in price. However one benefit to this is that these are cumulative. So if I buy a 1TB today and want more storage I can buy a second 1TB and have 2TB of storage. If I buy a 1TB for use in my ps5 and later want to add more storage I have to remove the 1TB and then put in a new drive. Of course the old 1TB could be used as usb storage but can't be used for running ps5 games if I am correct. Now you can just buy a cheaper 2TB drive for the ps5 from the get go and have that larger space but again if you needed 3TB or 4TB you'd have to ditch the 2TB for a 4TB drive.

I'm surprised they didn't announce a 2TB . Could have easily tacked on another $100 and it would still look like a good deal compared to the others.

Good point, but I think the main issue is SSD prices are crazily competitive. In the same day I read XBS is getting a new 1 TB upgrade for £150, I read a 5 GB/s nVME 1TB stick is available for £44*. Unless there's rapid competition and downward pricing for XB peripherals, or plenty of notable discounts, it adds a large premium to the reduced-storage entry-level boxes.

Still, a first step implies future products from other companies. And even if not massivley cheaper, margins are probably fatter and attractive to more players.

* Yeah, it's a deal, but deals on big stick SSDs are way more common than for XBS storage cards as more producers and buying options.

I mean, a lot of these mobile devices are going 2230 format, which should drive costs down over time. But it's always going to cost more than the 2280 format just due to how bandwidth is generated over many multiple chips vs less chips. That's just an unavoidable truth.

True, but when the base cost is low enough, the high percent difference for 2230 will still only be a matter of dollars. In the long run, you want $50 2280s and $70 2230s, and XBS having the pick of any 2230 option and it not being poor value then.

yea, if we see the storage stay around 1-2TB then 2230 can stay competitive, but once you move to 3-4TB, the 2280 will be way ahead as it will just use 6x500 or 8x500 chips. And 2230 will need to use 2x2GB chips.

But you’re right. There is a limit to how much SSD space people want, if game sizes don’t expand any further, the price points will be fairly good for Xbox over time.

Is it impossible to launch at some point a 2280 version?
It would stick out very far behind the console. Making it very easy to snap in half. But it’s possible and yes it would work. Cooling would be an interesting discussion.
