Microsoft leaks details on Xbox Next

I believe that HDD will not be on Microsoft Xbox SC (Second Shot).
For PVR functions, It'll use existing PC as home server. Maybe they even launch a cheapo 'Sbox' server PC, with minimal gaming capabilities, but emphasizng more on multimedia capabilities. XoxSC and SBOX connect via WiFi.

XboxSC might use some Compact Flash cards, which today are available around 1GB, and by XboxSC launch, will probably be cheap enough.

It'll be up to the user, whether he'll go for 64MB or larger cards, depending on the need.
For gaming on the internet (downloadable patches, maps...) and MMORPG's, I think 1GB would be adequate amount of storage.
If one wants to store more, like films, music etc.. one would buy the Sbox server PC.

Edit: Is it possible to transfer data from xbox to xbox via the existing network ports? For XboxSC, wouldn't it be easiest to use simple network cable between 'boxes.
Edit: 3 x 64bit processors = 192bit for PR and marketing > if PS3 = 128 bit.

guys, stop listening to people that say there is no hard drive. Xbox 2 WILL have a hard drive. It's not "that" expensive.I wouldn't be suprised if it was a notebook harddrive as those are going in so many devices outside of notebook PC's these days.

The guy that wrote this article didn't have accurate information.

I've thought for awhile now X-Box 2 won't have a HD. It hasn't been a big advantage for X-Box, and I'm sure MS regrets putting it in (imagine if they could have saved ~$25 on every X-Box out there, that must keep Bill Gates awake at night).

Notebook hardrives are dropping in price far more rapidly then desktop harddarives. THe more devices that use them, the more in expensive they will get.

The HD in xbox wax it's biggest advantage. Without it Xbxo live wouldn't and couldn't be possible.

I'll take your word for it, ( and a face value too!)

This begs the question tho, do you have any accurate information? (whether you wish to share or not? Just curious)

Bbot, I'm not so sure about the number of processors. I do know it's a multi core chip. How many cores is something that's uncertain. I do know that everthing that was written in the articles out there certainly wasn't given to xbox 2 developers. The guys I know didn't even know about the article until I told them, and the first thing they said was "what a bunch of BS".

Nothing accurate yet, because nothing accurate has been given out to any xbox 2 developers. As soon As I hear somehting more solid I'll let you guys know. So in other words, as soon as the devs hear, I'll know.

But not everyone with an XBox has, or even wants, XBox live. So I don't really see how XBox live can be a good enough reason for a HDD in every XBox. If the HDD's main reason is Live then surely it would have been better to make the HDD part of the Live package. They wouldn't even have to increase Live's price either, the HDD could be given away totally free since they'd be saving huge amounts of cash by not putting a HDD in every XBox.

Maybe MS are thinking along the same lines with XBox Next. Or maybe not.... maybe that article is innacurate. Still if MS did leave out the HDD, I can't say I'd disagree with that decision.

PowerPC 976? I'm not so sure anymore, now that I'm finding out that MacOSRumors.com is one of the LEAST reliable Mac rumor sites on the internet.

Do you know when it is going launch? As developers might already know by now...

I would personally rather see a 512MB-1GB SD card integrated onboard than a hdd. Less moving parts means longer life for my consoles.

Qroach, unless you know someone directly from MS Xbox division, don't be so sure that some developers don't have that leaked info.

Large amounts of flash are obscenely expensive, not to mention that flash is comparitively slow, and isn't designed for large numbers of read/write cycles.

Personally, i'd be surprised if there wasn't a hard drive, but i wouldn't expect a standard desktop 3.5" drive like in the current xbox - i think a notebook drive, or maybe even a iPod-style microdrive are more likely (especially since the market for the latter is likely to explode in the next few years).

I was told not to expect it until 2006 (which is what these devs heard from MS) i do think they would accelerate that time scale if it was required.

These guys are making a first party game and ramp up development in about 2 months. They were told they will be the first third party devs to recieve any xbox 2 hardware. They were even told that as soon as MS ha final specs, they would reecieve them. The leaked info is BS imo. Wait for thereal stuff...

So MS is going to publish it? Any hints what kind of genre it is going to be?

Looks like Mercury news changed their article to say:

"Earlier versions of these PowerPC chips are used in Apple Computer's high-end G5 PowerMac machines now."

The earlier version of the article didn't have "Earlier versions of these PowerPC" .
