Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard King for $69 Billion on 2023-10-13

Will Blizzard be able to make a worthy Warcraft these days?
if they are given the funding to do it right! Yes.
Both war3 remaster and sc remastered had its funding significantly reduced and removed. I think with proper support they can make something really good

Do they have any talent left to do it justice and actually make a great game, that isn't just a re-hash with some microtransactions?

Microsoft doesn't play like this anymore. They'll reach an agreement.

My guess is , they will extend the contract a year at a time and each time push for better and better terms for microsoft. Not sure how long sony will think its worth it . If MS starts making exclusive content for the xbox/pc platforms it could be worth it even less for sony

I am personally curious what type of contract they would offer Sony? Certainly it won't be the marketing rights. Maybe smaller cut? Though I still think that COD mainline will become exclusive.

I'm not a fan and have no idea why it sells so much, but why can't sony spend the next 4/5 years to make an exclusive COD competitor?

They can try. And it'll likely fail for the same reason as everyone else that has tried and failed to make a COD Competitor. The only to succeed somewhat has been in the BattleRoyal area.

Yea Activision has 3 studios dedicated to COD and who knows how many of their other studios do support work for them. So to catch call of duty you either need to devote just as many resources but more importantly time since games typically don't take off over night or get really lucky and hit a new fad well like a fortnite

But think about it , Call of duty started to become big with COD 2 with launch xbox 360 back in 2005. it's almost two decades of legacy . now I haven't bought one since modern warfare 2 on the xbox 360. But I know people who buy it every year like madden or fifa. So it be hard to just pull people away from COD. I already have friends that have asked me about new xboxs for cod and bethesda games.

Because it is hard? Sony has been trying to make Halo killer for years and failed to do that. Various companies tried to make COD killer and failed.

I would say it is all about luck.

I'm saying it as people who put a lot of work into it.
Whether that be graphics, gameplay, level design, idea etc

Are they sure it will definitely pay of, maybe not. Doesn't mean its simply random luck though.

You prefer the term 'chance'? No one can really predict the next big thing in entertainment and doing it 5 years out is probably as close to luck or chance as anything. Obviously making a killer AAA title takes $ and talent, but being a generational blockbuster is still going to require a bit of lightning to strike.

I think after the "luck/talent" stage which gave a franchise its initial push it might be more about mental programming. As long as you deliver the original trigger experience you'll get your customers even if that experience is objectively stale.

IMHO Nintendo's whole business concept is based on catching people in their normative years as a child. Why would adults otherwise continue play kiddie games? Only because they try to reproduce the dopamine rush they had as a kid.

Adults play games aimed for younger kids because they have younger kids. I stopped playing mario after 64 as I entered my adult years but when my nephew was 5 we started playing it together.

Same here :p Im playing games like minecraft due to nephews, its quite fun. Wouldnt play it myself alone though ;)

Ok, granted. I haven't thought about the Dad/child dynamic here:)

Lol it's all good. I don't have kids , so I can understand how easy it is to not think about kids influencing what they play. I'm entering my 40s and the game types I play change often aside from rpgs. I play shooters a lot and then stop for years , I play adventure games and then stop for years. I hated zelda after wind waker but I loved breath of the wild.
