Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard King for $69 Billion on 2023-10-13

Now that the other thread is closed I must ask here.
What's the possibility for Microsoft to acquire Saber Interactive?

But the goal is to control the market, not to sell some copies of the game. Nobody spends 70b expecting to get them from selling the games in retail. Most of the publishers in the world haven't seen that amount of money.

This is neither possible nor necessary. Tencent are the #1 gaming company by revenue and the great bulk of their revenue comes from platforms they do not own.

They were rather emphatic about future Bethesda titles being exclusive to Xbox, I don't really see them suddenly doing a 180 on their goals for exclusivity.
With things like Starfield I think that's fair enough. It's a new franchise. It will be interesting to see what they do with Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

A consideration that many companies must have when weighing of platform exclusivity. must be that IP is only as valuable as it's appeal. If you restrict the platforms on which an IP is available and people don't buy into those platforms then the value of the IP will diminish. Suppose Elder Scrolls VI and VII don't come to Sony or Nintendo platforms. The value of the IP will diminish as it becomes just an Xbox/PC title - no different to Halo or Gears or War.

If you market is large, as is Nintendo and Sony's console markets (currently at least) you can carry a drop in IP because a smaller margin of the console base. It's harder to carry that when if your market share is relatively small.

It'll be really interesting to see what happens over this and the next console generation in terms of any IPs that were on multiple consoles and which then are not.

Support PS5, PS4/Pro, Switch, XO, TV's, phones, tablets via xcloud.

Doesn't need to be gamepass, similar way some switch games are delivered.

Then they can claim we don't only support PS5 but PS4 also.

Only single development via GDK for everything.

If you want the best experience then obviously PC or XS.

That could be 3 years from now. Would be interesting to see them take that approach. Not so for PS5 owners, although maybe they would just be grateful to be getting access to those games :D

When Microsoft acquires enough publishers they will have a very strong clout in the PC/console gaming market. Microsoft literally needs Capcom under their wing to become a juggernaut that cannot be ignored and have influence over Nintendo or Playstation. With Bethesda and ATVI, Game Pass having EA Play and potentially Ubisoft+ in the future, they would be a very strong and important player in PC/console market. Microsoft uses big tech as a boogeyman to get a very strong influence in the gaming market. Game Pass by itself is already becoming a platform rather that the a service.

Mobile market is a very different beast altogether though. But overall one cannot understate how important that ATVI acquisition is and why Microsoft is willing to go to great lengths to approve it as soon as possible.

I believe MS will adopt a strategy of $70 on PS, but "free" on GamePass for some titles like COD. They will continue to acquire studios and end up with 30 AAA games in development at some point with the intention of putting one out every 2 months on 5-year dev cycles.

I do believe there's a breaking point where GamePass becomes irresistable - Halo, Forza, Gears, Fable, Avowed, Perfect Dark, COD, Diablo, Elder Scrolls, Doom, Starfield, Psychonauts, Hellblade , World of Warcraft, Wolfenstein, Outer Worlds, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay, Wasteland, etc.... + all the 3rd party stuff they get on there. It's ridiculous value for $10 a month.

For nintendo they already let companies do cloud based games for titles that can't run natively on the switch. So I could see them being open to Xcloud versions of all of Microsoft's games. The question is if they will let game pass or a curated game pass of just MS first party titles via xcloud for the switch or next gen console.

It could be interesting if the switch becomes a pseudo xbox portable. It be even more interesting if Game pass ultimate gets the switch xcloud streaming portion. Even more so games that can't run well on the switch from 3rd parties could still make their way through the platform via xcloud. It could really be a win win for Nintendo.

For sony I don't know . MS is going to continue through the agreements but are they really going to put in resources to develop native all of duties for playstation ? I doubt it unless Sony really opens up the check book. So I would see sony having to reduce platform fees or even have to deal with cod being a streamed title only on the playstation. I still don't see new cods or other games post 2024/25 on the ps5 platform. I don't think sony is going to give MS what they want and MS will point to Sony saying no to the titles not being there not MS being anti competitive with the purchase. Esp if Nintendo goes with an xcloud option for those titles

I think this is a given. And of course Microsoft tend to charge for DLC so they can afford to include the base COD into GP day one knowing many on Xbox with GP subs will buy the DLC, of which they will probably be more per game because the release cadence will slow. Plus revenue from non-Xbox platforms.

I'm curious if they'll also include COD in GP for Windows. I would expect them too, but...

I thought the "day 1" policy was for both PC and Console. Is that not true?

I have no idea, the only thing I know about GamePass on Windows is that it has different/less games than on PC.

The console and PC market dynamics are quite different in terms of Microsoft's position in the competitive market. GamePass policies were established before Microsoft spent almost 80 billion on publishers, with the goal of those acquisitions making money. There is probably a delicate balance of including games in GamePass to increase its appeal vs the actual monetary return. Less COD games and more paid-for-DLC for each game may not change anything.

It is true. All first party titles are day one on Game Pass, and MS's commitment for Xbox games is that they launch day one on PC as well. PC first titles don't have to reciprocate though. Gears Tactics and Flight Simulator took a bit to get ported to Xbox, Age 4 hasn't (yet) had an Xbox release.

CoD would be in Game Pass on both platforms day one.
