MGS2 tearing

One thing a lot of people fail to realize about the difference between MGS2 and Shenmue is the difference in FRAMERATE. Shenmue runs at 30 fps (with draw-in, clipping, slowdown) while MGS2 runs at a crisp 60 fps even while on the tanker w/ all the effects going on at the same time.

1. Shenmue doesn't have clipping not to mention HUGE draw distance ie Dock level.

2. The NPCs fade in/out they don't clip and it's only when there are many of them onscreen.

3. The slowdown is few and far between, again only when there are many NPCs (who have their own mini lives).

4. Shenmue runs in Progressive.

Not too bad for a game running on older underpowered hardware ;)

yeah? They're probably biased trolls like you. Only the most ardent PS2 hating people think that MGS2 is unimpressive graphically.

Funny how it's when you get owned you suddenly start saying "oh it's just an opinion" - you were fighting pretty hard against other people's opinions in this thread.

Actually if you go back and read the first two pages of the thread, it's obvious that most of the MGS2 supporters can't accept NO for an awswer, or an opinion for that matter, and even resorting to (not surprisingly) using Shenmue running on older underpowered hardware...genius.

The only people who had no clue that it was clearly opinion from the beginning was the MGS2 zealots, hence the need for declaration. You unfortunatel however are late to the party and have no clue whatsoever ;)

Thats true enough marcolleny.
Even though I wasnt all that impressed by SC, I guess its just a matter of opinion. Both are great games in their own respect, and while both are part of a similar genre, they both have pros and cons complementing each other.
Great graphics, Bad Framerate = SC
Great Framerate, Low rez textures = MGS2
Don't get me wrong I love MGS2, I just had to be rational so that the X-Box f@nboys dont catch up with me.

I don't know what's worse: MGS2 Zealots or people who haven't played the game.

Oh you forgot the 3rd category:

Those who've played and beat the game and didn't think it was the best graphics they've ever seen :p

Shenmue > Getaway
PS2 > DC
Microsoft > Sony
Sony = done for next generation

Chap, you are such a boring fanboi.

I have no idea where you pull your stuff, but from the smell of it, it's most likely out of your ar$€.

Would be nice to see you stop ragging on PS2/Sony, we all know your opinion on the subject anyway, but this is probably beyond your capacity.

*G*

wow, this thing is still going?

it's obvious PC-engine doesn't like the PS2 very much so I don't think anyone should waste their time debating with him.

Who's done?
Sony/Toshiba/IBM have already wasted many billions in areas that although not necessarily pure ps3 R&D will nonetheless benefit it's dev.

MS can't break their whole piggy bank to compete.... so they have to be on the same level.

Well okay chap sure, i'll belive that when I start seeing better games for the XBox
What do you mean by "seeing better games for the Xbox"? Are you talking graphically or do you mean in the gameplay sense?

I might be wrong but it sounded like if he was calling him on Microsoft > Sony statement, where he thought PS2 games overall were better, or Xbox games were not up to his expectations, so he wanted them to be better ;) ?

Once again, I never brought up Shenmue for direct comparison....I brought it up because it too has its share of problems that very likely could have been fixed. You were all up in arms claiming something such as some tearing barely noticeable to most (as seen in this thread) should have been fixed given the timelength the game was developed along.

Like seriously, do you purposefully twist everything into some incoherent pile of garbage just so you can convince yourself that your opinion is above all else?

You should be a politician or PR spokesperson (if you aren't already).

Ovarall Xbox quality of games, is not on the same level as the PS2. Dont get me wrong the graphics are better. But the quality of the game isn't. Its like Daikatana with the Doom 3 engine. The problem isnt the graphics.
And by no means, the Xbox does have great games. Its just too few right now. The PS2 has its fair share of crap games. But nowhere near as much as the XBox.

I'm renting Splinter Cell for Xbox right now. I'm on the training mission and I've already encountered two minor instances of tearing. Now how long has Splinter Cell been in development for? Dead to Rights for Xbox also has tearing and that game was in development for about three years.

I guess PC Engine won't be playing SC, since he is deathly allergic to tearing... Too bad... According to prevailing logic around here, that also means there is something flawed or inadequate in the Xbox design for this to happen. Hmmm... Their only choice is to go back to their DC to relive the "goodtimes". There is no escape for today's consoles.

Also curious, is the framerate in SC as bad as it shows in the interactive demo you see in the stores? When they say "movie realistic", they must mean the 24 fps that goes with it. ;) What about the shadows? Are they a low res mess? You know you have stepped into "Xbox world realism" when your shadow looks like you are being rendered at 200x200. :D

As chap would do-

Also, don't forget that you have complete control of the camera in Splinter Cell.

Personally:

Spinter Cell > Halo > Shenmue 2 (Xbox) > Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)

Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 are equivalent. While PS2 is better at T&L, DC is better at texturing and load times. They're roughly equal anti-aliasing now that PS2 devs have figured a few things out.

IMO, I think people who can't see the major difference between PS2 and GCN/Xbox are blind. They're like night and day to me. It's probably because I have a widescreen progressive HDTV though. :)

DC is better at texturing and load times
PS2 has more ddram and a 4X dvd drive. Textures and load times should theoretically be better on PS2.
