Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain & Ground Zeroes

Far Cry 2 was set in Africa and had great diversity in the map. :yep2:

You're being sarcastic, aren't you?

Either way, I think you can get plenty of mileage out of a singular setting. MGSV also seems to be mechanics-driven like never before. It should be plenty entertaining as a result. I'm assuming not even bland looking VR training type environments could change that. This isn't the type of game where you're doing the same exact thing over and over while the window dressing changes over time.

This years best three games require upwards of 80+ hours to complete fully (Blooborne, Witcher 3, MGS V)... I am sure most people can play only these three this whole year and never complete all of them, need more time in each day! So happy that the open world aspect turned out great in this MGS, it was my only concern.

No, I liked the map diversity in Far Cry 2. There was flat bits, hilly bits, plains, dense jungle, swamps, rivers, ravines. It was a good environment to crate your chaos.

Fallout 4 is supposedly over 400 hours to see everything. Take that 300 hour Witcher 3 "mini game"

An interesting perspective on the MGS V review events from Rock Paper Shotgun:

RPS said:
Let’s deal with the premium currency first. Many (if not all) of the reviews that are already online were written by journalists who were forced to play MGS V for eight hours every day, in regimented timeslots, while under instructions to share only the information that was deemed necessary by Konami higher-ups. Far from being a work experience course, this was a four-day review event, in which writers attempted to complete a sprawling open-world stealth game within a strict time limit. Or chose to do a review-in-progress instead, savouring the experience.

I know review events aren't uncommon but rushing to review a game like this in these kind of circumstances is not going to result in a well considered rounded review. No wonder Eurogamer only posted an 'early impressions' article with a full review coming later

When I was younger I used to think being a game reviewer would be an great job but I really feel sorry for game journalists who are genuine gamers whose experience of a game is to play it under circumstances like these.

Hm, I might have underestimated the potential variety of environments but I haven't seen that many videos of this game anyway. I hope we get to explore most of Africa.
Face it, you are being pessimistic over nothing. Even if the game has all the shortcomings you mention, which I believe it doesn't but let's say it does, and if it scores 10/10 even after having so many shortcomings then doesn't it mean it's one hell of a game not to be missed !!!!! it must be something really solid (pun intended) to score massive 10s everywhere when it lacks in so many areas :D !

C'mon dear boy, just savour the fun ! It's never gonna happen again, this is it ! This is the end .....and a magnificent one at that  !

We should make an online petition to declare the first week of September as an international holiday so that gamers can play this legendary masterpiece in peace :yep2: !

It's not limited to MGS though. A lot of games, esp bigger blockbusters do this and I think it's a bit crap. Reviewers need to be more vocal about this stuff.

For the most part reading that the emphasis is being put on gameplay vs story makes me happy. Having suffered through MGS4, the less emphasis Kojima places on story and cut scenes, the better it is.

I do hope the part about "the real ending is locked in hard mode" is not true or patched. That's idiotic.

Do any reviews mention the controls? Let's not beat about the bush, are they the same as GZ?
Same and better. Many reviews said that "controlls will never cause you to fail in stealth", and that gameplay is INCREDIBLY open ended. They describe that game has more variations in solving missions than any other game out there.

New trailer, last one is inbound !
And everyone says its the best MGS ever so stop looking for negatives :D ! They say it has the best gameplay which requires improvisation and on the spot thinking ! Can't wait for the shit to hit the fan !

Am I the only one that is disappointed that the story is trimmed down? MGS4 was crazy...but this is exactly what I liked about it. So I am quite shocked to hear the actual reviews.

Gameplay seems to be great. Gameplay seems to be super varied an all. But without a proper motivation and connection by a story line one could follow...it seems to me that this is just a sandbox with some missions to play around a bit. Similar experience as playing an online horde type multiplayer game. And for me personally this is very negative, although I can see how people are super excited because of all the gameplay possibilities.

I think I have to wait and see...maybe the hype train grabs me as well and I still buy it?!?!? But right now...probably not.

Is it trimmed down or does it proportionately appear less compared to the gameplay?
In past games the game was linear. There was one path and so the game determined the amount of gameplay and the amount of storytelling
Now gameplay options are much vaster and its up to the player to progress the main story, The trailers show lots of interesting stuff in terms of plot telling that raise too many questions. I dont thing the story is any less crazy than it used to

Reviews say the story is 'sparse'. So compared to the more linear previous games, it's probably diluted in the huge open world.
This. In a linear game you're always on track to progress the story because the game gives you no opportunity to do anything else. The moment you introduce a truly open world, you introduce opportunity to deviate from the story and leave it behind. And the point of an open world is to invite exploration from a linear path but leave it there to follow for those who get don't want to explore or leave the story path.

I mean just think of GTAV (or any GTA), Far Cry etc... the story is as diluted or dense as you want it to be as there's so much to do besides it.

Having said that, I'm still not sure I'm sold on a new MGS game. Don't know if I have the energies.

Ditto. And I still have to play Ground Zeroes. I think teen slasher Until Dawn will be my diversion for the next week or so.
