Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain & Ground Zeroes

Animations are far better and responsive than in any older MGS game...

And Fulton balloons are necessary for gathering of soldiers and goods because players can create and maintain their own military base at the sea [balloons were first introduced in Peace Walker]. Everything that is shipped to the air is brought there and tasked for various missions (expansion of the base, research of new equipment that can be delivered to the player on the ground, intelligence services). Mother Base management plays very well in hand with the storyline of the game that described Big Boss as a hero who had his own army.

They will show much more about Mother Base and its systems in todays stream [45mins away :) ].
That has an MGS2 vibe in it

Yes, they featured that part of FoxEngine before

I don't mean that it's see-through, rather the lighting changes color when it passes through translucent objects, kinda like colored shadows, hence the red hue behind the cloth (from the sun's perspective) projected on the sandbags.

I don't mind the concept of the balloons, but the way they shoot up in the air, irrespective of the weight of their load (but even then), is just weird to me. If that's possible at that speed, then why aren't we launching rockets like that yet?

Also, I believe that the animations are better (the running certainly looks better), but the way the enemy soldier moves doesn't look like much of an improvement imho and stood out to me instantly.

Well, I never minded some of lighthearted mechanics of MGS. But I find this mechanic pretty absurd. Kojima is pretty much one step away from having Snake break out some Pokemon balls.

Here is the gameplay demo, starts at 50min mark

Amazing!

Very hyped for this game, not hyped this much for a metal gear game since Metal gear solid 2 on PS2. The gameplay shown here is really impressive, almost a dream come true.

And I loved the fulton/mother base management stuff of Peace Walker, so glad it will returns in MG5 TPP.

You can even fulton ~1 ton metal containers!

LOD pop in is very visible this time, especially on vegetation. That wasn't the case in the excellent 2013 red band trailer. Also don't know if it's the video quality or something else, but texture filtering seems off this time, which is strange considering Ground Zeroes never suffered anything like that.
Seems like the lighting engine supports translucency:
Nice catch .

They then hover instead of a constant upwards acceleration.[/QUOTE]

...for the same reason, there's still a box in the game, where Snake, as silly as it may be, can walk around and fool enemy soldiers in a funny way.
This. MGS is plain nuts! Just go with the flow on these games.

Here is the official directfeed video posted by KojiPro! Excellent 1080p30 quality [over 800megs].

However, both this vid and livestream had weird audiosync problem. I moved the audio 200ms forward and Ocelots's performance is now PERFECT:

Error was probably made because of the original recording gear/software KojiPro used to film this.

I think we may have mistaken the MGSV Phantom Pain map size.

Initially we used this image from kojima radio to find the current map size

MetalGearSolidVMap-670x376.jpg

which appears to end up with ~4km by 4km map size.

However, on the official website, they've given us a much clearer picture, and the map size may be wrong.

If you look closely, the map clearly shows a size of 4km width, and at least 3 km, with ticks going into 4km.

so the 4km by 4km seems to be perfectly fine.

However, if we look closely and putting together information, we know that there's in fact two areas: Afghanistan and Africa.

Nowhere do we see on this clear map a "different area" that points to the existence of an African map.

However, if we look closely, there is a map of similar size of 4km by 4km that's placed "above" the Afghanistan map, so in fact MGSV Phantom Pain may actually have two 4km by 4km areas, Totaling 32km^2, EXCLUCING Mother Base.

This puts the total map area roughly on par with Skyrim, which has around 36km^2 not excluding impassable areas.

Hopefully this bigger-is-better fad is gonna die soon. "Here's a shit ton of bland looking and utterly inconsequential space because we really love to waste everyone's time. Why - erm - I guess because GTA did it. Enjoy!"

Fulton system actually exists, the only part in the game that is "gamey" is that the bodies attached to the fulton balloon get lifted up in the air for a short period of time as well (plus the weight of the container being quite high for fulton). But it's not something that originated out of weird fiction.

I guess we can discount some factors like the noise of the plane and bodies being lifted up because it's an MGS game and they are always ridiculous and it serves well for gameplay purpose.

Original skyhook lifting sheep real life :p

The improved version called Fulton system
