Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain & Ground Zeroes

Quick caveat - When I don't understand the appeal of something ( or just don't understand something period ) I ask. Given the state of gaming forums this can easily get taken for hater criticism. Keep that in mind with my post. I'm asking, not "hating".

That being said. I saw decent graphics, nothing showcase. What little story was mentioned could have been taken from a Rambo sequel or some of the early 80's :Save Afghanistan propaganda films. They even threw in the "sniper girl in a bikini top". I really am at a total loss. It wasn't presented in a comedic fashion, so the "over-the-top" feeling doesn't get a pass. I am missing something. I'm going to stop before I say something people will really take some personal offense to, but what the hell am I missing?

I would answer, but I have the same fears.

Well MGS stories have always been a mixture of silliness with seriousness (and some craziness). Not everyone likes it of course, but at the same with still know very little so who knows how it'll turn out.

For me the best part swas the graphics and the gameplay. Graphics: it does look fantastic for a current-gen open world game. Night/day cycle (with indirect lighting), dynamic weather, better HDR than most next-gen games shown so far, natural looking aesthetics (guess Kojima learned his lesson after the awfulness of MGS4's color grading), excellent NPC character models and animations...

Gameplay: Open world structure, new gameplay additions like the transportation, stealth while on horse, some "parkourish" movements, CQC.

That's what interests me, but I can see how others don't care about that stuff.

EDIT: The story apparently will go for more serious themes, like child soldiers but being Kojima I don't expect it to fair too well.

Holy crap! That lighting!
Splendid! Never seen anything like it

Thats on current consoles? If yes I dont care about a next gen console. I already own two of them :p

probably running on PC. major Nelson confirmed on twitter not exclusive, probably also on PS4.

It's also on current gen consoles, but afaik you just saw the Xbox One version.

The game looks like it is still in the uncanny valley. It looks very good for a current gen game, but it does not look like a next generation game. The characters still look stylized.

Re: story. Thanks. That is a useful part answer at least. I see elements in their stories, from CGI footage and teasers, and think - ok near future, very near maybe, and then something ridiculous happens. Like a giant robot or something. Was never certain how I was supposed to react to "Nasty African combat and then having something utterly silly thrown in." That alone just throws me a loop.

I might try a MGS for once. The open world part really got my attention. First reminded me of Red Dead LOL. Can't wait to check it out.
