My favorite part about the MGS games is the complexity of every character...and it steps away from the common tradition found in games and even films where characters are innately good, or innately evil. Noone is evil in MGS, each boss could be your friend or foe, and each has a backstory to explain their actions. If at first you don't understand their actions, read into their backstory.

My favorite characters are Eva (good or bad?), Ocelot (good or bad?) and Big Boss/Naked Snake (good or bad?) - playing as the latter in MGS3 really adds a lot of depth to MGS4. It'd be very hard to gain that kind of feeling from the player, without playing at least MGS1 and MGS3 beforehand.

Ditto ! No two characters can look each other in the eye(except for Otacon and Snake) coz there are so many layers to each character which the other doesn't know.
For me the relation b/n Naked Snake and The Boss and the Love story of Naked Snake and Eva were the most complicated yet most warm relations ever shown in a game or movie. The love making scene at the end of MGS3 was the climax of a long drawn struggle of a trust and temptation which made the scene so fullfilling ( ;) ).

I have not finished MGS4 , so won't comment on that, but playing as Naked Snake in MGS3 is closest a player can get to a game character !(at least for me)

Oh you're lucky - I was just going to comment about the ending. Nevermind...talk to you about it later :D Have you added me on PSN?

This game is awesome :D

Easily one of the best games I ve ever played if not the best.

Anyone downloaded the MGS4 database?

Hey! Who said "simply gunning"?
Robert? (with "traditional shooter" or something like that)
My first playthru -on Hard, remember!- took 50 hours. Ouch. THat was hard. HUNDRES of resarts. I even got the Chicken emblem. =)
Of course it would probably take less than half of that time in total if you started playing normal first hard later. :)

You call it complexity I call it multipolar personality disorder.

Anyone killing or trying to kill without a good reason is evil on my book. That covers pretty much all secondary characters.

It is like flipping a coin, repeatedly. And I wasn't just talking about good or evil: dead or alive, stupid or smart, subtle or obvious, all the same.
and each has a backstory to explain their actions.
If at first you don't understand their actions, read into their backstory.
I don't think so. In MGS3
, The Boss was trying to kill Naked Snake because? Yes she let him easy a couple of times, yet in the end still fought him to the death. To make him Big Boss? Yeah right.
For the most part, the backstory doesn't explain anything in an intelligent way. For example the actions of Liquid Ocelot has been explained more than a few times in MGS4 (including his own multiple revelations) yet
they are all different, mostly inconsistent with each other, but you could say each of them fits well with his background. Rolling a dice I guess.

What about Vamp's stereotypical wish for getting killed?
Only in the last second he was indeed willing to get someone do something about it. Naomi is another head case.

Among those, I only like young Ocelot and to some extend Liquid Ocelot. I also like Drebin and obviously Old Snake. But maybe besides Snake, my appreciation has nothing to do with the story.

I don't care for the story, but in the end... I gave points to Liquid Ocelot. He shown extremely good sportsmanship in that final battle. T_T

I think The Boss's reasons were made very clear by Eva...she explained everything didn't she. The Boss was ordered to die by the hands of Naked Snake for the US...

I don't like Drebin as a character.

Well who is killing without good reason? What is a good reason? Who decides what a good reason is? What is evil? Does evil exist? It's not as simple as saying "who ever kills without good reason is evil". You're talking as if there aren't f*cked up people in this world...who change their minds along the way. You also rule out the influence of power of country's and AI on the behaviour of mere humans.

Vamp is clearly a head case who enjoys killing, but also has the desire to die by the hands of a great warrior/ninja - so Snake must prove himself to be the better fighter for Vamp to die by his hands.

Just finished Act 4 . I must say I feel pity for Raiden has become ...... He was like a curious child in MGS2 , and look at him now ....He is all messed up in his head , with no hope for life. I used to joke with my roomie (before MGS4 happened) that if Snake was real I would join Philanthropy.....sounds like something Raiden would have thought but look how hw ended up. He was supposed to grow into a hero....after all he was created to be like Snake after all...

But look what truth did to him ...:(

ready to give up all for Snake....I bet Snake must be feeling guilty for him turining into this feelingless being....

Also, I fired up the beginning of Act 5, but don't have time till Sunday, but the ship looks as good as Crysis ! I don't think I am exaggerating !

How many acts are there? I just got to act 3.

Btw I am really confused with the "resistance on map" thing. I am pointed that a member of resistance has been detected and shown on my map but I dont see anything on my map.

There are five act's. The map will only show the area he is currently in, but he shouldn't be that hard to find.

Hint - minor
If all else fails look for a guard that's whisteling - generally people loose him when he changes clothes. Personally - everytime I lost him I just turned up the surround sound and listened for a faint whistle - then I'd head in that direction

God this game rocks

:)

On my second playthrough, I tried to take the higher path (as close to roof access as possible). I finally caught a glimpse of the "guy" who's been tailing me using Solid Eye.

I can't tranquilize him though. His head will pop back in when my cross hair is aligned. I also tried to charge him, but he disappeared into thin air around some corner.

I just look for the guy with the "blue name"

It just highlights the general area.

Otacon will also tell you this after he changes clothes. He does this too often, telling you how to do things before you get a change to figure it out yourself. I found trailing the resistance member a bit boring. When he got hold by some guards he started running around like a madman after I tranquillised the guards. He kept running into more guards which I tranquillised again and a while I had tranquillised several guards in the exact same spot without them ever wondering whats going on. The part where he disguised himself was pretty nice though, keeping track of him between all the other guards.

Finished the other day. Five acts of sheer bliss. My god!, what a classic. Quite probably the best game I've played this generation by far.
