LAIR Thread - * Rules: post #469

I still believe that something went seriously wrong with the development of Lair and they had to do something close to a scrap and restart a little more then a year ago.
Interesting theory. The difference between first showings and what we've had are a good bit of supporting evidence to, as you say. The first stuff shown was awesome. That said, the cutscenes in Lair can be pretty spectacular from what little I've seen. Could be the tech demo's were just the engine without worrying about the crazy draw distance etc.

Well, the problem wasn't just that it felt like RS, but that it just didn't 'work'.

He said RS worked since it was set in the Star Wars universe, and it was all a cohesive game, whereas LAIR feels like a mashup of RS with dragons, and just doesn't feel right.

Did he say anything about the story ? Star Wars is also a mashup of activities (to put it kindly) :D As long as a subset/string of activities are coherently put together, it should be fine. Someone in GAF pointed out that there are cut scenes in-between that disrupt the game flow. Perhaps that's what EGM meant.

I also read that there is a twist in the game. I am also curious what "memorable battles/levels" these people are refering to.

Now, like I said, EGM doesn't have much credibility to me, so I'm much more interested to see what gamespot says.

In general, my expectation for the gaming media is very low. I'd rather get a general sense from the metasites and the fora, and if they made it to the shortlist, form my own opinion by playing through the game/demo.

It's time like these that 1up needs a kick up the backside.

They've really gone out of their way to criticse Lair.

They are being hyper critical. Did they mark down Kameo for "bad graphics"? - no, they gave it 7/10. Lair does not have bad graphics, I may accept the criticism for bad art direction though (ie. colour choice).

Anyway, 1up/EGM are clearly being hypercritical. They have now dropped their charges against the controls - something which Julain said he would talk to them personally about - they must have agreed. But 1up are arrogant, would feel stupid for changing their score - and so being the c*cky folks they are, they begin to criticise every little thing they can. It's immature, and unneeded. It doesn't aid consumers - it confuses them. They need to swallow their pride, and realise being hypercritical on one game and not on the other is extremely inconsistent (I wouldn't mind if they did the same for every other review).

So let's wait for IGN - unless they feel they have been shown the red flag to bring down the gauntlet on Factor 5 as well.

Every criticsm which I've written about (Graphics not impressive, didn't like the art style, dragon's spitting fireballs isn't realistic) are the reasons given in the podcast for the 5.5 score. They liked the gameplay and the controls.

You'd expect at least a 7 or 8 from a reviewer who only dislikes the art style and the way the dragons spit fire balls! lol. Funny. Quite sickening really - 5.5 is Genji or Bullet Witch score - an absolute joke for any gamer to observe such poor journalism.

If the scale is 1 to 10 then 5 is an average score. If the reviewer thinks Lair is an average game, the reviewer should give Lair the score of 5.

on the other side, I think alot of people are already 'sold' on the hype, and don't want to believe that it might not be a great game.
My position has always been that F5 needs to CONVINCE ME their gamer's going to be good.

I never liked their star wars titles on the N64 and GC, I thought they sucked pretty hard TBH. So if Lair turns out to be a dud..well. That's to be expected.

They've not really impressed me with the playability of their games since the original Turrican on the Amiga (and to some extent Super Turrican on the SNES).

So I feel I've become pretty immune to the Lair hype.
Peace.

Most major review sights use review scores like grades, where 7 is average and 5 is an F. I think what you say makes far more sense, more dynamic range and less BS scores in the 9s like many over hyped games like Doom 3.

Why are people so stuck up with the EGM review? If the game sucks, then it sucks. You get to save your money and can buy Warhawk or Heavenly Sword with it. Or better yet, rent it to see for yourself.

Right now EGM should be giving more creditability because they played it. You haven't. But when you do, you can make your own judgement.

No you are not looking at the right angle.
Just few examples:
This was happening few months after the launch of the 360 (when the deal was sealed).
All 360 game reviews got a boost.
2 pro-MS guys went to work for MS.
The egm issue that was out on the same month with the launch of the PS3 had Halo 3 on the cover.
and much more like Peter Moore visited 1up networks' office dozens of times.
You put the dots together and you'll see the whole picture.

wow... just wow.

tin foil hats for Everyone!

I think it's all because of this...

Guys, the 1up discussion is a total waste of time.

First of all 1up is owned by Ziff Davis and not by Microsoft. Plus, it seems like the discussion itself is stuck in the ad-company loop (the corporate equivalent of the ad hominem route).

Discuss the review, if you have any axes to grind with it. Everything else is off topic.

Anyway, okay, let's get back to the game. I can't wait to get my hands on it and make up my own mind. I guess all this bickering here is just frustration for there not being better stuff (both in terms of games and in terms of reviews) out there. ;)

It is the truth though.

I heard MS is bribing EGM and 1up networks.
They hires 2 guys straight out of 1up networks. Those 2 guys are pro-MS. That at least set the tone that if you want to work for me you need to show some deeds.

LOL. They didn't like Lair so they must be bribed by MS? This is Beyond3D still, right?

I wouldn't blame the missing of rep system. Before there was even any rep system B3D Console Forums was a much more civilized place, with only some five or so household trolls to feed.
The last couple of years have been a downhill, it all started with some weird troll mass invasion.
This place just isn't what it used to be in the golden years ( ~ pre 2005).

It's a bit silly to witness a thread extend several pages just because one score from one magazine.
Wouldn't it make sense to hold judgement until people get their hands on the title themselves, or at least until there's real reviews, not some blogpodcasts.

The game is still on my "buy-list", the negatives I've read on forums don't seem too bad to ruin a game that's an arcade shooter at heart.
I expect it to be a fun blast, in the vein of Project Sylpheed (75 points on 1UP ;) )

I'm quite jealous of people who like the kind of game Bioshock is, because they've just got served a gold nugget! I just hope Lair is underrated. I'm very likely to get it because I just love the idea of flying a dragon with the sixaxis, so I'm probably willing to cut the game a lot more slack because of it.
