Lack of "buzz" in this forum!

Why is there no excited rumor mongering about the coming next generation of GPUs? They have traditionally been "introduced" around february, which is pretty much upon us; just a few days away now. The weeks before then has always been surrounded by intense speculation, but not this year. Very strange, as the next generation of GPUs will be more interesting than ever, particulary for ATi.

That speculation has traditionally always been a hallmark of this forum, but now it is very quiet... Is it because Uttar has pretty much gone into hiding, Hellbinder's nowhere to be seen and Chalnoth's stopped whoring himself out for Nvidia perhaps? ;)

I demand this be rectified immediately! Anyone with some juicy gossip about the next generation are hereby ordered to disclose it immediately! :D

Actually, my stats show that it was March last year that the "buzz" was occuring, reaching fever pitch in April and finally peaking in May, of obvious reasons. At the moment I have no reasons to expect wildly different patterns for the PC side this year.

However, whereas last year GDC took on some importance, as it was just before the annoucements of NV40 and R420 a little after, I expect the talk of any next gen PC graphics will be drowned out by the talk of the consoles - arguably this is where the more interesting next gen 3D technology will come from in many respects anyway. CeBit in March will probably provide the next major fishing expedition on any next gen PC graphics.

I second the motion. MuFu and Uttar are hereby summoned to take up their posts and inaugurate the R520/NV50 proceedings.

Perception is that NVDA is regaining leadership status and this is reflected in share price as ATI is grossly undervalued whereas NVDA is overbloated relative to its recent financial performance. Contrary to what's been said in some other threads, my gut reaction is that ATI needs to bring R520 to market ASAP, and with more than just enthusiast offerings. Can't see X300/X600 sustaining ATI's OEM market share much longer. Lots of pressure on Dave Orton currently as momentum is being lost again after a two-year surge. Are he and his team up to the task?

Hehe, you said rectified.
Here's some juicy gossip I just made up: :devilish:

Nvidia's next card will be using Rambus memory on it.
ATI will be buying SGI.
Nvidia's next card will feature on-chip cache memory.
ATI will offer a multi-gpu card in their next gen.
Intel will hatch a new graphics chipset that will kill both ATI & Nvidia's solutions by using IP from both companies it attained through agreements with each in the last couple years.

Entrails watch! Well, err, not really I guess. . .that's about as direct as Wavey gets during lead-up season.

Well I disagree with this whole thread, I'm buzzed as hell right now!!!

I wasn't aware this place had turned into the general forum, someone must have secretly switched the labels around... :?

Hint: the thread was meant to be taken seriously. Can you guys, stoned or not, please at least try to act your age? :?

Your thread almost has a comical aspect to it, so I think it's going to be hard to take it too seriously... They are rumours after all.... :p

There is no Hype because there is nothing to be Hyped about. Virtually everyone knows about 80% of what ATi is offering this time around. Nvidia may not even show up. If they do its pretty predictable to. Plus the Graphics Market is Slowing Down as far as development Cycles. The Next REal Exciting thing comming is not till the Next Round after the R550 refresh

Ati and Nvidia have had ever increasing cache sizes for several generations now. Its basically already in there to some degree.

Wavey--

Looking back over the last several years, what is the shortest notice you ever had of an official release date for a new gen release, what is the longest, and what was the median? Not looking for manufacturer names or even gpu/card names here (unless you want to share, that is), just number of days in advance there was an official date set and that date was communicated to you.

I disagree, Nvidia is grossly overvalued sure, but ATI is overvalued as well as far as I am concerned. Just not grosssly :p
