Microsoft Sets Price for Xbox 360 Versions
Alex Pham
Microsoft Corp. said its next-generation Xbox 360 game console would cost $299 to $399 when the device is launched this holiday season.

The $299 version will come with a wired controller, but will not have the 20-gigabyte hard-disc drive, wireless controller, headset, Ethernet cable and wireless television remote control included in the $399 version.

Sony Corp., which said it would launch PlayStation 3 in the spring, has not released a price for its new console.

"This will put pressure on Sony come holiday of 2007 because by then Microsoft will cut their premium price to $299 or below, while the PS3 will still be north of $399," said P.J. McNealey, an analyst at American Technology Research. Meanwhile, Nintendo Co. cut $20 off the price of its Dual Screen hand-held console to $129.99.

Went up less than an hour ago. Early leak?

Blech. That would be a lie layered on top of a bad decision. After all the fears they put to rest at E3, now they prove them all valid? Blech again.

This makes no sense . How will this put presure on sony over a year after they launch the ps3 ?

I fsony can't reduce the price of the ps3 bellow 400$ after almost 2 years then they are in big trouble

If there is a 'no HDD' version, what about games that use it? I remain confused. To date we've heard MS telling devs not to use the HDD for games (according to rumours? Unsubstantiated?) and we've heard of games using the HDD such as Oblivion (unsubstantiated?). Would that not mean that some XB360s couldn't play some games? At launch with some major launch titles supposedly needing the HDD, this sounds like a bad move.

There's 3 possibilities -

1) This two-tierd system launch is bunk.
2) No games use the HDD. It's there only for downloaded content etc.
3) MS actually are releasing a two tier system where some games only work on the premium model.

I can only hope the first is true.

THe guy from oblivion said it required the hardrive in one of his video interviews i believe at ign . So that is a title that needs the hardrive.

So I guess if u wnat to play it u have to buy the hardrive version .

I dunno The thing that really makes me think this is wrong is the wired controller. Ms kept saying they were going to include the wireless controller standard . Its even in a bunch of magazines

I believe the answer is a little bit of 2 (games will use it, but not require it) with a little bit of 3 (MMO games), though the HDD can be bought seperately.

Backwards compatability will not work without a drive, however.

The drive is the last of my concerns. Taking out the wireless controller and headset kills the deal for me. I doubt I'll get a 360 at all now, even after a price drop.

so if there is no price announcement, then what else could be the big news?
only other thing big i can think of is a specific launch date, but you would think they would tell you the price and date at the same time.

till MS says something, its all speculation to me.

hd-dvd , new launch games , Game bundle deal , Free xbox live for a year with purchase ? Halo 3 images ? Gears of war as a launch title ?

THey would all be pretty big to me . Remember the tgs big anouncment ? It wasn't really that big

There was one picture of a wired controler. But everyone just assumed that was just for the early demo boxes.

It's missing that one "Xbox Live guide button" which is kind of interesting...

At first everyone thought this was because it was an early demo model and was not yet fully equipt. But perhaps the premium $400 model is required for the "Live" features. No HD, no fancy wireless controler, no head set. Smells like a non Live package to me.

and according to the major nelson site, they wont be saying anything till around 8:30/EST
so i guess i'm gonna go to sleep and read about it when i wake up.

heres to a 1 package deal w/ HD & wireless controller included. (and maybe a few other extras) :)

nite.

It's legitimate, 2 SKUs (why are you all acting surprised?) & yet another gen. where the devs. fail to utilize the HDD because the base model will be the more attractive one to consumers.

I doubt that there'd be a model that would be labelled (overtly or not!) as "non Live". That was the whole point of the silver and gold stuff surely.

After the success for this gen's Live, MS would be monumentally stupi.... Wait, I won't finish that sentence because it's so absurd!
