Japan Sales Thread *renamed

But does it really matter? I mean we are talking about a product that is supposed to sell into ten's of millions. Whether you sell 1k, 2k or 2.5k in Japan, its still worthless and shows that even a few Japanese oriented games cant change how things are going.

Personally I think releasing a shitload of anime related and typicall Japanese games we dont even get to see over here will do alot more for x360 sales than those one or 2 big titles.

I think it matters somewhat, 360 is not 'supposed' to sell 10million units in JPN, hell if it sold 1million that would be a great success considering the cirumstances, and would also make it an even more viable platform for some Japanese releases, which is the main goal.

It's already sold ~400k. If they can get up to the range of 5k/week, that would bring them around 300k/year, which would see them hit 1million somewhere in 2009.

Essentially, if MS can just make sure that sales keep increasing, they should be able to reach 1million installed without too much problem, and easily beat the 530k sold by XB1. It'll probably be a long slow trudge, but it does have some sustained momentum, however small.

Actually, the DS hasn't reached PS2 sales levels yet. It will only have caught up in March 2008. What happens afterwards is the real litmus test with regard to expanding audience in Japan. This is going to be very interesting.

I think it'll surpass PS2 LTD sales before the end of the year.

What did BD do when it first launched??

Hmm...if this shows a similar jump to BD in HW sales...we could be lookin at a week where 360 outsells PS3, fairly meaningless but certainly one for the "Who'da thunk it" category.

The week BD came out, X360 sold 20+ thusand consoles.

BD sold about 80k first week if my memory is correct

So Trusty Bell did well, but did not propel 360 over PS3 as some had expected. However, Sigma shifted precious little PS3 hardware.

DSL sales seems to have steadied around 120k. I've heard they're not sold out anymore. PSP sales also remain pretty good, relatively.

Oh btw, I have heard some vgchartz posters claim that Oblivion 360 is pre-ordering really well and may outsell Trusty.

The 360 seems to have a rabid game buying base in Japan as elsewhere, such that it may actually be a better place to launch software in Japan right now.

The additional 5 thousand units this week is thanks to the Trusty Bell bundle pack advertising push. Ninja Gaiden was not part of any bundle pack advertising so it didn't really help move many more new units.

But next week Hot Shots Golf 5 will be out and that comes with a PS3 bundle co-marketing package so that will probably help more than Sigma. Also Folk Soul just came out yesterday, I wonder if that will make the charts.

Wii comparisons: At 31 weeks, Wii is where GCN was at 119.2 weeks (December 22, 2003), where GBA was at 22.3 weeks (August 21, 2001), where DS was at 37.0 weeks (August 13, 2005), where PS2 was at 35.0 weeks (October 29, 2000), and where PSP was at 58.0 weeks (January 15, 2006).

PS3 comparisons: At 34 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 3.8 weeks (March 24, 2000), where PSP was at 12.5 weeks (March 2, 2005), where GCN was at 16.2 weeks (December 31, 2001), and where Wii was at 5.2 weeks (January 1, 2007).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 13.9 / 86.1, PS3's highest in a month. This brings the total shares to 24.8 / 75.2; Wii hits the PS3 triple point. Due to PS3's higher-than-usual week, if Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up to Wii in 161.5 weeks (August 4, 2010).

PS2 vs DS: At this week's rates, PS2 and DS meet up in 18.4 weeks (November 6, 2007) at ~20.88 million apiece.

Total hardware sales for the year have passed 8 million. At 26 weeks, this surpasses the totals reached for 2003 and 2004, and passes 8 million much quicker than 2005 (50 weeks) or 2006 (37 weeks).

This is Japan related but not about sales. Times online UK is reporting that Japanese prime-time TV is facing stiff competition from the Wii. It's an interesting turn of events:
Japanese desert prime-time TV to play on their Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii – the games console that is outselling Sony’s Play-Station 3 by three to one – has begun to “stealâ€￾ prime-time television audiences in Japan.

The Nintendo machine, which was specifically designed to repackage video gaming as a family-oriented affair, is believed by media insiders to be responsible for an unprecedented decline in early-evening viewing figures for Japan’s top-rated shows.

PS3 Hits 1 Million in Japan
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/805/805957p1.html

I think Moore should have taken Tony Snow's job.

Actually, Moore made a very salient and valid point.

Sony must have designed their business model around large success in Japan, which they are not seeing. MS on the other hand, never assumed they would sell big numbers there.

So, Sony's relative lack of success in Japan is much more meaningful to them as company, than it is to MS.

And here's the context of the quote, (were Moore implies that he is also failing btw):

I built a business plan [for Japan], but I don't think my expectations in Japan were anything close to what Sony's expectations are. They are failing. They're missing their plan by much more than I'm missing my plan.

Pretty much speaking the truth, not sure how you can disagree with that.

Totally true. They for sure expected to have sold 3 million in Japan by now. After all they were telling people they could sell 5 million with no software.

What do you call it when you sell half as much with a year head start?

For MS in Japan, compared to Sony??

I call that unimaginable 12 months ago...

What do you call it when you go from being market leader, to being outsold 6:1 in the span of 6 months??

It's clear that Sony is doing much worse in Japan, relatively, than MS is. And if you can't see that, then you need to drop ALL pretenses of being objective and admit you wear Sony blinders...

What do you call it when you go from being market leader, to being outsold 6:1 in the span of 6 months??
Just to be precise on this point, though Wii trounces PS3's weekly sales at the moment, both worldwide (taking a 9 million Wii to 3 million PS3, which were the last sorts of figures I've seen) and in Japan, Wii's sold about 3x as many units as PS3. If things don't change, a 6:1 or worse ratio will happen. But it's not there yet, and at some point something is going to change, for better or worse or Sony.

Honestly I don't care about the sales numbers, I was more interested in the statement. I thought these companies had a friendly rivalry and didn't talk trash. It was also highly ironic considering MS's Japan numbers, if Nintendo had said it it would make much more sense.

I'd like these PR guys much more if they didn't act like people running for a political office and were a bit more friendly and honest.

Sony and MS have been trash-talking each other for the past couple of years! It even starter to affect Nintendo, who on the whole had been above it.
