Image Quality and Framebuffer Speculations for WIP/alpha/beta/E3 games *Read the first post*

Anyone played the new Lego Pirates of the Caribbean demo on the 360? looks like sub-HD to me - maybe 1152*720 again? it also runs at 30fps with a very nice motion blur instead of 60fps.

what's the rez for this new game made by saga?

Binary Domain

looks pretty solid but a little edgy.

hehe still ugly at 1980x1080 with noAA. that robot face scares the hell outta me but ya i doubt these are indicative of the actual game at least on console.

edit: nvm some edges are smoothed quite inconsistently as AL has mentioned

The LEGO games have always been 1280x720, but the AA mode depended on the game. At least on 360, they've always used 2xMSAA, but it seems to be less and less obvious with the added effects they keep layering on top (just like with Unreal Engine or other games). I do know that they used an edge blur filter on the PS3 for Lego Star Wars III (still 1280x720) though.

I may be wrong Al but the distant objects look too fuzzy to be a 1280*720 title and looks like there is no traditional MSAA nor edge blur filter...wish I had a capture card to take some screenshots.

Game still looks really good though. :p

Something like this?

LEGO SWIII

I know it's on PS3, but this is just an example of the edge filter.

Or it could just simply be their DOF.

Maybe I used the wrong word with fuzzy but it doesn't look blurry like the screenshot you posted above it's just that everything looks rough with jaggies, even the not so distant objects like your characters are not clear/sharp enough.

Hopefully we will have some screengrabs soon to finally see what I'm talking about. :)

Also WTF at Red Faction running at such a low resolution...wasn't Guerilla a 720p title? why lower the resolution so much for a linear game? maybe they were going for 60fps as the demo's frame-rate is unlocked and almost always feels like it's hovering between 40 & 60fps but with some horrendous constant tearing which completely ruins the whole point of having a high frame-rate IMO.

Apart from the really really really really really crappy compression, some bits do appear to show that.

Maybe you're confusing texture resolution for the geometry is pretty sharp... Anyways, it's not like the pictures have any decent compression either.

Of course not, there are textures that looks sharp [like those ones or those], but still image looks blurry. Maybe its just colors and lighting, dunno, but they just dont look like many 720p shots i've seen.

This is good example from Motorstorm Apocalypse. Game has MLAA so should be a little blurred, textures are quite low res, but still image is much sharper that those shots from LA Noire for me.

All of the LA Noire pics also have strong DOF all over the place, which is obviously going to contribute to the bluriness.
