Image Quality and Framebuffer Analysis for Available/release build Games *Read the first post*

MGS4 should look better at 1080p, than 720p, because it can display the full 768 lines instead of downscaling to 720 I think. I believe quaz also mention that the vertical resolution is more important than the horizontal.

I very much doubt that 6,25% more horizontal resolution would give you something noticeably better in 1080p than 720p.

Forgive me if im wrong, but if MGS4 is rendered at 768p, signal should be downscaled right?

Downscaling is much better than upscaling, as downscaling is generating pictures based on more imformation than its going to show, wheras upscaling has less pixels than needed and has to generate the information it lacks by using mathematics.

IQ should be much better with downscaling than upscaling.

I noticed that as well with MGS4 on my set, running in 720p would decrease the appearance of artifacts (from the TAA mostly), but the image would not be as defined, although overall it looked more 'cohesive'.

thats what I thought too at first until I actually play it in both setting. Maybe it has something to do with the software scaler they build for the engine. Like SC4, game was downscaled on 360 but it still looks softer than the PS3 version on my set. Im not a pro so I dunno.

Can we have an official or concrete confirmation about what MGS4 is doing to achieve that quality?

If you guys are talking about playing it in a Full HD tv, wouldn't it be because, being rendered in 1024x768, when you force 720p it will upscale (horizontally) and downscale (vertically) and then the tv will upscale it to 1080p, whereas if you force 1080p the game will upscale both horizontally and vertically to 1080p (and from a higher vertical resolution)? The difference should be even greater if the tv upscaler is worse than the game's.

Thats a good question, cause here in my 50" Full HD plasma(besides/apart internal process of this panel) its much bettet IQ in 1080P than 720P.

(this tittle and GT5 prologue its only 2 games makes me set ps3 to 1080P)

already explained many time
in 720p double rescale for 1080p TV (with downscale + upscale for vertical)
in 1080p just one upscale, better of course

Thanks Quaz, i must have totally missed your original post about the issue :) It makes perfect sense now.

But 720P displays usually also upscale to 1368x768, because of their dumb panels...

Well, on the same 1080P set, it should look better if set to 1080P, but it shouldn't look much different on comparale 1080P and 720P sets.

Sonic Unleashed

880x720 (2xAA)

880 is not 100% accurate, but pretty close (maybe Quaz can confirm this)

The PS3 version's got slight blur maybe due to a poor upscale work

Yea, I wonder, what if you have a 1366x768 set, and run in 1080i/1080p (assuming that the TV accepts this input and downscales it - which many do these days). Should this look better than running in plain 720p?

Because, to my eyes, it does look a tad bit sharper.

I think WWE Smackdown vs Raw on PS3 still holds the record with its merging of two 640x720 MSAA buffers in a vain effort to emulate proper 720p.

I was wondering about this, as well. Assuming like you said, the TV accepts a 1080i input I guess it would. :?:

The difference in frame rate is extraordinary - 60fps with screen tear on 360, wildly variable frame rate with even worse screen tear on PS3, but that's OT for this thread ;)
