I think it is wishfull thinking that they are entirely unrelated ... I dont think the free market could have provided the atom bomb on time.

What's it good for, anyway? Blowing up threatening asteroids?

What is advancement? Deadlier weapons? AI? Cure for cancer? Faster cars? Bases on the moon? Holograms? Travelling to Alpha Centauri?

Everyone has a different picture of what's good and what's bad for our future. I think the question "Can humans advance without war?" is self-contradictory. Because getting rid of wars is an advancement in itself.
