I bought a 7800gtx because evga had a hurricane katrina auction for it, and that made me happy.
Otherwise, both companies seem to lie/cheat, though ati seems to have a slightly cleaner looking record. On the other hand, nvidia's linux drivers (though still broken at times) seem to be somewhat better than ATIs which is a plus. I'm also happy that I can do supersampling, though I wish the AF and RGMS on my 7800gtx was as clean as it was on my 9700pro.
They both have pluses and minuses imho. I could easily see myself going with either manufacturer in the future for a variety of reasons.
