How Much Emergency Money needed in Netherlands?

There's rice in Netherlands? awesome!

You'll find rice pretty much everywhere! Probably the cheapest staple food you'll find in the supermarkets (along with pasta).

Personally I'd recommend you contact your bank before you travel to let them know you are going to be overseas. This should reduce the (small) chance of them putting a block on your card. My credit card was once blocked when I was overseas as my bank assumed the transactions I was attempting were fraudulent! This was some years ago, however.

Note that you will be charged a withdrawal fee (perhaps a couple of Euros?) for taking money out of cash machines using your current MasterCard debit. If you can set up a local bank account when you get to Holland, you should use that as standard and keep your old account for emergencies only to avoid these fees.

Finally, I'll say this: learn to cook!

Best thing you'll ever teach yourself, especially if you are going to be living on a budget. Otherwise you'll end up subsisting on fries and mayonnaise!

I think you can get pre-paid cards with or without phones in some of the larger supermarkets, the HEMA (is one of the cheapest), most larger electronic stores and various specialised phone stores. You can probably already get them at the airport right away with a 10 euro credit.

Your biggest worry could be if you have to pay for staying the night. It's hard to find a cheap place for that, and on short term there may be little room as well.

If you have to travel somewhere by train on your own, the tickets start at 1 euro for really short travel and max out at 50 euro and must be bought before you get on the train. If you don't get a ticket arranged for you along with your flight, you may want to check that out in advance. For traveling inside a city, you can walk almost anywhere in most cities and there are maps around usually. Taxis are insanely expensive, so if you do want to travel inside a city, use public transport, and buy a ticket/pass for that in advance as well (cheaper), though there you can sometimes still buy one on the bus or metro, and that's not insanely expensive (though still easily 3-5 euros), but a cab almost starts at 15 and ramps up fast).

Internet cafes aren't that common over here, if you need access to a computer, best bet may be a library.

I'll PM you my phonenr so you have at least one in case of emergency. ;)

Between having a Master Card and 100 euros, you should be fine though, and yeah, informing the bank in advance of your travel could be smart.

hmm, after reached the campus i need to remember to ask them to tell where to shop cheap raw materials to be synthesized to food.
That reminds me, do budget to buy a bicycle (hope you can ride), 100 euro should cover you for a second hand bike.

wow theyve certainly gone up in price, I used to buy them for 5 euros from junkies

Paying someone to steal a bike for you isn't much better than stealing one yourself, morally. ;)

And welcome! We're having some nice Spring-time weather right now (we typically have a lot of rain), but yeah, it still gets quite cold at night.

Also, today and tomorrow is Easter, and both days are official holidays, so you may find a lot of things are closed.

Walked around a bit in eschende, wow. Netherlands so quiet and have nice view. The car drivers also awesome, they stop when I want to go through the road.

Unfortunately I will live in uncomfortable place, in ITC hotel. They don't have simple things like free wifi and breakfast. The TV is super small tube TV that don't have hdmi.

Fortunately I can leech free wifi off another buildings wifi signal lol.

Btw I found a huge security risk in 100 percent unsecured local network in ITC hotel and from reading arstechnica... I don't know what should I do. It seems a huge risk to report it.

It's funny, because some people from the netherlands choose to emigrate to sweden for the same reasons. :) (The netherlands being considerably more densely populated.)

Not sure if it's such a risk, you could always tell them when you're checking out you know, but hotel staff being what they are I don't know what they could do about it - if anything at all really...

If you do it politely they'll understand you're doing them a favor by telling them, if you do really know your stuff, you never know, might even land you a job. Just tell them what a better setup would be like, that doesn't cost them a lot more hours to support towards their guest.

im not confident with my verbal english so i think i will try emailing them with the summary of the risk and to fix it.

btw all things in Netherlands written not in English and wifi is getting hard to get. Cant depend on google auto translate :(
going to some store called "Jumbo" and all in netherlands. There's a lot toys shop, clothing, etc too.

but there's no manga/comic/game/figurine stores?

btw CRT TV still popular in Netherlands?

Just use a gmail account and say it's just for their information and then delete the account and never bother with it again.

Well a lot of student flats probably still have a few around.

BTW, doesn't the Uni try to help foreign students to find flats on campus any more? (Although I dunno if you have the personality to enjoy a shared flat.)

ho ho ho finally accustomed (a bit) to Netherlands weather and some street rules.

btw http://www.amazon.de/ only available in dutch and i cant read dutch lol. Looking for cheap Ethernet to fast WiFi. preferably 10MB/s

Isn't that cheap enough? Btw, when you mention cheap, how cheap you want it to be?
Is the 3 EUR food a full meal? How big is the portion?
If you want absolutely cheap food, maybe you need to learn to cook. Do you have access to a kitchen?
