Bit-tech.net has a preview up of new technology called Allegorithmic demonstrated at GDC London which promises to reduce texture file sizes by 70%. Don't believe it? Well you will when you download RoboBlitz from Xbox Live Arcade "soon". In case you didn't know, RoboBlitz is a full featured 19 level XBLA title that runs on Unreal Engine 3 and clocks in at under 50MB. The real kicker - the entire texture set for the game totals up to under 300 Kilobytes. Check out screens of the game to be amazed, and check out the full preview of this awesome technology at bit-tech.net:

The next demo was of a game that is due to come out for the XBOX Live Arcade called ‘Roboblitz’. Due to the requirement to get the game under 50MB, the developers needed to keep the textures as small in filesize as possible. Using the new texture system the overall size for all the textures was less than 280KB – watching the game (which runs on the Unreal 3 engine) I was amazed.

if i remember correctly intel recently was showing some ray tracing techniques at a conference, the idea was to merge the cpu and gpu together at some point in the future. From what i can tell cpu horsepower is what is holding this technology back as everything is done on the fly but if intel has here way with quad core and eventualy 8 core cpu's we will be seing a lot more of this.
