Horizon Zero Dawn [PS4, PC]

The combat against machines are very good. I think it is a little bit more on the action side than RPG side. You can win combat of quest level higher than yours but you can lose combat whith a better level than the quest level. Combat need good preparation and strategy, very important for machine as dangerous or more than the sawtooth and crucial when you fight multiple ennemies. Some gears and equipment help but rolling for escape attack and aiming skill are crucial.

Just hit level 10 and unlocked my first Long Neck. Hunting is immensely satisfying, particularly when hugely outnumbered. It's great to encounter a massive group, then use you path tracking, stealth, distractions and combat skills to take them all out, one at a time.

I've got a few of extra weapons but rarely use them - perhaps I just don't need to yet. Spear, bow and planning are working for me so far.

Also this has that feel Fallout/Skyrim quality of making me want to explore everywhere, because everywhere feels Uncharted 4-level of crafted and worth checking out.

So if a quest is a higher level you can do it - it's just a 'guide'? This game is great and sooo beautiful! I keep stopping and just admiring, I hope RDR2 can get near this level of fidelity

DOnt be so smug, you willl need all those weapons and more soon, very soon ! :D

I am being royally thrashed now. The second area is tough on hard. I am not engaging most of stuff i am seeing because it takes a LOT to bring these beasts down and I run out of ammo/resources very soon. That makes me wonder if I should dial it down to normal cause right now I am running low and scared ! And on top of that that dammed bird in the sky! I am literally hiding from most of the stuff. Took a longlegs head on and two snapmaws happily joined in and depleted all of my ammo n resources ...but I won ! :D
It's scary now.

OTOH, I think we should just declare it GOTY and be done with it. No need to wait the whole year to declare one..

I did the two level 15 corruption zone missions at level 12 - I'm playing on normal difficulty, which is probably a factor!

Took down a stalker at lvl 13. Bows and Spear.

As an amazing game as it's been thus far, the chances of it getting widespread GOTY with Zelda, Mass Effect 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 launching in the same year slim. I'm sure it'll be some people's GOTY but I don't expect it to sweep the awards. GOTY awards will likely be pretty split in 2017.

Ok yes, the end critter in Cauldron Sigma is a definite pain in the arse. I'm taking a break from being burned by him over and over. I thought I'd be a clever arse and override the two watchers before freeing Mr Burn, but they stupidly run into the shield and die before I can take the shield down. Artificial Stupidity at its best! :yep2:

I've found an overridden watcher can do quite a lot of damage to other dinobots. Like everything else, it's a case of working out a strategy which is half the fun of it. I remember when I feared engaging a Sawtooth but they are like little kittens now. :nope: Come here little kitten, have some milk. :runaway:

I took that guy down in two tries. I had taken one of those down out there in the world so the experience helped. Freeze him and then shoot the sacs with piercing arrows. Repeat again till it dies. and DONT GET HIT, thats the permanent rule of this game.

I dialled down to normal now, i dont really know why now. I thought I might miss out on the fun or something. Still have to fight a machine in normal though to see the difference. But i was just scraping by on ammo on hard in the second area. Although I am getting doubts now as I did finish LOU on hard by just scarping by and it was fabulously designed to be played that way.

It's definitely better to encounter new enemies in an open environment, which is where you spend 99% of your time, rather than the contrived environments the game sometimes throws at you in missions because it offers the freedom you are used to us to experiment with strategies.

All u need is the time to scan properly. The only way to win a bigger one is to weaken an enemy by exploiting it's weak element. Right arrow type or weapon type is paramount. Except for that cauldron the game has not thrown any boss in a closed space till now. I am guessing it will only be in cauldrons as those are the only indoor spaces I have seen till now.
I love how this approach makes all weapons worthwhile. U have to switch according to the enemy type and u don't just spam one sword to the end !

The Corrupter at the gate of the Embrace was the first 'boss' in an enclosed space and that was pretty easy but I guess it depends which order you do things in. I fully expect a mission where I engage a Stalker but I've encountered those in the wild and can bring them down. Mostly what you need is experience. :yep2:

Oh boy it's a completely different game on normal :( . On hard a snapmaw was a dark souls knight on normal it's just an animal. I don't know what to do now. I have tasted a tougher stressful experience and now the normal feels strange :-/.
Why am I stressing over this so much? Back to hard and let's see...

Just killed him using the tripcaster for stun and critical spear attacks and he went down pretty quick. I was looking through my arsenal and had completely forgotten about the trip caster, which I had not re-used since the introductory tutorial mission. I also had a proper look around the crafting menus and found the fire resist and health boost potions. D'oh! Clearly I wasn't paying enough attention to the game and that's when it kills you over and over for thinking you can get by with just the bow and spear.

I'm now thinking that later on I might need specialised bows (damage, fire, tear mods) as well. Any advice for those further along than me (level 14). ?

Thankfully normal works for me - it gives me a good challenge because I am struggling a bit with the many variety of weapons and choices - so it means I can just 'have fun' with the game...and man am I having fun! The gameplay is just so slick - reminds me how I feel when I play Uncharted where I naturally use the controller without really thinking.

Level 19 and just about set foot out of the first area to go towards Meridian
I was late level 18 when I left for Meridian. I guess that's the approximate level you'll be if you run all the errands and do all the side quests. I used fast travel just once so traversing the sacred lands = adventure/encounters = experience = levelling. :yep2:

Now I'm in Merdian I see there is a story! So it's not just about having fun and revenge!?! :nope:

I am so mad at this game right now, I just found a game breaking bug that means for long periods of time I can't play the game! :runaway:

My daughter is addicted to it!
