Halo 5: Guardians [XO]

Phew, fortunately I've tried to avoid writing anything bad...

Well, I'd love to but... Not only do I not have an X1 yet, I haven't even turned on my 360 in quite a while. Just getting mentally exhausted at work for any such activities at home :(

That's too bad, it's been a while and some of the group I use to play with back in the Halo 3 days have moved on, but it is a pretty fun group to play with.

Much better than risking some random @sshats, although every now and then you get a good crew.

I got Halo 5 today and have been playing it, and I can say that right off the bat neither resolution nor the low AF are the main technical issues with the game. This is a really fast paced game where you are focusing on enemies a lot since there are a lot of them so you don't really notice these issues as much and the clean artstyle kind of helps well to gives atleast the appearance of clarity. And I am sure that most people who play the game on a TV from a few feet away won't be able to tell that there is something wrong with the resolution, though it would be very obvious to anyone who sits closer or plays on a monitor.

But there is one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb, and it hampers the visual experience of the game. The animation LOD, to simply put the distance at which the animation speed gets cut in half is far far far too low ! Another visual effect that sticks out is the distance at which shadows get rendered, every Halo game that had dynamic shadows has had ridiculously low shadow draw distance, so low that I'm not even sure why the developers even bother with it ? It's the same distance at which the animation quality changes which is around 10-15 meters.

EDIT: Also I really dislike the helmet aesthetic in the HUD, it's even worse and more obstructive than Halo 4.

May people have already received their copies and completed the game. Ending and some other cutscenes have been leaked, so be wary of spoilers.

Very very light spoiler (no details)
Story is not really about what the trailers or Hunt the truth suggested. Seems like it'll divide the fans quite strongly. Also, cliffhanger ending.

I watched couple of full runs on twitch and it definately feels like that this series won't get any kind of closure any time soon. It reminds me of those bad TV shows where you know the whole season if just setup for the next season - Here's the cliffhanger, hope you like to wait. I guess if you're just Halo gameplay or game mechanics fan, you can be sure that you'll get Halo 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11...∞.

Helluva price drop for the kindle version (Amazon.ca):

It's a shame the campaign didn't turn out as well as it was hyped to be. They really needed 10s across the board here for it to be a full system seller.

Currently rocking an 86 on metacritic but with several reviews as work in progress until the multiplayer has been tested on live servers and kudos to those review sites!

hmm it more and more looks like destiny, including the supers and abilities and icons and hud and... it also have bad story...

btw the map design looks very nice, very titanfall-like (good verticality and indoor/outdoor). Combined with the "big feel" of Halo design. Not cramped like titanfall.

Destiny had -no- story. There are many reviews out there that not all of them have indicated the story was terrible by any means. No single review has indicated the story was bad, it was just a missed opportunity, as in, it didn't live up to its promotional hype campaign. It's an issue with anchor bias/confirmation bias. Some reviewers are very very picky about their stories, others not nearly as much.

I'm confident the first cutscene for Halo 5 had more story and dialogue than all of Destiny put together. No Joke.

From what I've read it sounds like gameplay is very good and a return to the Halo 1-3 mold of reasonably large maps etc. The biggest complaints have been about the story, so I guess it depends on where your expectations lie.

Practically every comment about the gameplay was that it's at least as good - if not better - than the best Halo games so far. Except for a certain... "boss fight" in Legendary which is frustrating with AI companions (but should be awesome with co-op).

That's the thing, does anyone really care about the story?? I guess some hardcore people that are into the whole lore might, I just doubt anyone else really notices.

I've played all of the Halo games with the exception of this and ODST and I couldn't give a good summary as to what the plot was in any of them. Something about ancient alien weapons that other aliens are trying to capture and defeat humans with? Not sure I ever cared about it. Though to be fair cartoon sci-fi isn't my thing.

All I remember is that (most of) the games are bloody good fun to play and hilarious in co-op. I spend many an hour playing with a friend quite seriously and then simply resorting to knocking each other in the back of the head (instant death) when we least expected it.

I only care about MP honestly, but having an incredible SP and MP would be icing on the cake. I would still appreciate a really good story though, and from the sounds of it, since most of here have some insight into the expanded universe, the story could be quite good!

Obviously there're people that care about the story. Halo has entire books and animated series explaining a lot of the stuff.

They're not exactly best sellers though. Whereas the game most definitely is.

From what I am reading the complaints revolve around the lack luster campaign. Story is one of the critiques but "brain dead" AI, and mediocre level design are the other issues that seem consistent in reviews. Multiplayer is going to be hazy because its one of those things that has to be played for weeks/months to understand the meta aspects that will determine its longevity.

I am not surprised, but I am very bias in my opinion of 343i and the way they have handled the franchise I was a fan of. However, no one should ever use a meta score to determine if a game is worth a purchase or not. Read multiple in-depth reviews about all aspects of a game and find consistencies between them to make a judgment.

I dunno, I thought the AI looked good in the first three levels and Hunters in particular are quite deadly. I've watched a supposedly good Legendary player (Naked Eli?) getting his a** handled to him in the first encounter with them, he must've been killed like 20 times but seemed to enjoy it a lot. Prometheans seem to be better too.

Then again it has to be played...
