Halo 4

Are the cows small and up close or far away.

Try the last few missions of the latest Spartan Ops episode. It finally starts to have that large-scale battle feel from previous games. As I played it, I kept thinking "Why wasn't this a campaign mission?"

I really like the Ragnorock Spartan Ops missions. Multiple objectives on a large map, a lot of enemies, big weapons, etc.

That's what worries me about 343 going forward. They have different priorities, and they seem to prefer small, linear levels over large epic encounters, probably because you can make nicer screenshots from smaller confined levels. It's that whole graphics vs gameplay thing. In this case, sacrificing gameplay for better graphics was not a good trade off imo.

Can you link to some of the large/open battles in Reach of ODST that Bungie did? I don't remember there being many. I bring this up because while Halo 3 had a lot of nice large set pieces with scarabs, tanks, drop ships, brute choppers, and the like the other Bungie efforts and the direction Bungie laid was already away from this. If anything I thought Halo 4 was more like 3 than Reach/ODST were and the larger Spartan Ops missions are very similar to the larger Halo 3 battles sand boxes.

Maybe they'll do better with next gen hardware. They clearly seemed to hit some limits with current gen hardware. I just hope it isn't an ideological thing.

The more people say they LIKE the large open sandboxes and dislike confining elements the more likely they are to listen. I agree, I want more scenarios where you feel like you are parts of a HUGE mission or war. I don't mind some stealth, vehicle chase scenes, indoor assaults, etc to piece the story together but the best parts are the epic battles.

I have already beat the Ragnorock SpOps missions 4x. I want more of that.

Reach's SP campaign wasn't very memorable or replayable, but looking back I think I enjoyed it more than Halo 4. I certainly prefered the visual aesthetics more.

As for epic large scale battles, they started in Halo CE and culminated in Halo 3. ODST felt like nothing more than a contractual obligation to me, although the introduction of Firefight was awesome (and much improved in Reach). Spartan Ops is a poor substitute for Firefight. Were there not Achievements, I would not even bother with Spartan Ops.

I'm enjoying Spartan Ops much more than firefight. The story progression has been good to see and frankly, it is fightfight with checkpoints to me. Just evolved to have story milestones.

Now Horde on Gears is a much different level.

The animated CGI intros are also unique and an interesting enterprise. Some of the shots are far superior to the Final Fantasy TSW CG movie!

I'll be around for a little while longer if anyone wants to play Spartan Ops... PM for gamertag? :)

Spartan Ops is fun and all but it lacks some things that could make it special and add a lot to the replay value..where are the scoring, skulls and why not a time/points personal record leaderboards to spice things up and make people return to missions and actually have a reason to replay them? it's weird seeing 343 putting a lot of resources and work on this mode and not include things that simple that were previously there in the older Halo games and people liked them.

Spartan Ops have potential and I prefer this idea of small varied missions with an actual story to Firefight but right now it's kinda disappointing. :(

The more I play Halo 4, the more I appreciate the visuals of previous Halo games, especially Halo 3.

Halo 3 Jungle (Sierra 117) > Halo 4 jungle
Halo 3 Desert (The Ark) > Halo 4 desert
Halo 3 snow/ice > Halo 4 Snow Ice

Honestly, If Halo 3 had better character models and AA, I'd prefer the overall look of the game.

Wow...to me putting Halo 3 in after 4, which I like to do with various halo games, it's a generational difference.

Reach was kind of the incremental step between the two.

Yeah... guess it goes to show just how subjective these things are I guess. Put me in the camp that thinks Halo 4 make 3 look like a previous gen game.

IGN Poll: Halo 4 vs. Black Ops II

I was surprised at the margins by which fans thought had best graphics, best campaign, and best MP. Quite a difference from the sales.

Not surprised. For some reason COD kills in sales yet is hated on the internet.

Epic Mickey 2 would probably crush COD in an online poll, LOL. Just by virtue of being the other option.

I guess it is just because haters are way more vocal...most people are happy and satisfied, no reason to complain and no motivation to state positive things either...

but this wouldn't explain why the same doesnt seem to be true to the same extent for other top franchises than COD.../OT

Well, look at this very thread. How many people here complained about Halo 4 campaign being stripped down, boring, linear, etc...reading some pages of this thread you could get the impression that Halo 4 is a very bad game.

i guess i meant it more in the sense that, at least until recently afaik, almost any cod video posted on youtube would have like 3x more dislikes than likes. doesnt happen to halo, ac, uncharted, etc. also b3d tends to be pretty critical. but at least its not in the horrible groupthink way that gaf is critical...

COD sells because gameplay > graphics.

It's only on the Internet where graphics > gameplay.

By the way, Josh. We need to finish the campaign in Legendary co-op.
