Had development continued, could DC have rivalled PS2?

I've got ALL Shenmue versions
Shenmue 2 Special JAP edition with VF4 demo ^^, Shenmue 2 PAL version, Shenmue 1 PAL, JAP and US versions + Shenmue 2X. The Virtua Fighter 4 demo looks incredibly good for dreamcast (playable via VF.net, but now it's on none-active again :() Better then PS2. I am not saying that PS2 is inferior to DC, but the console lacks anti-aliasing, 60Hz (All Sega games have 60 hz options, even the PAL versions), decent use of colours (only a few games use bright colours, the rest is all grey, brown), textures are mostly ugly.

If you compare PS2 version of Sonic Heroes and Soul Calibur 2 with the GameCube and Xbox versions, there is no doubt that PS2 is getting old.

1) 60Hz option will ONLY be in PAL versions because NTSC is already running at 60Hz, if u're talking about VGA out then ok
2) "PS2 lacking AA, 60HZ, decent use of colours, textures are mostly ugly" is such an objective statement.... u should be a judge... really
3) to be honest picking up Sega games on PS2 is not really the best example, they really havent done anything special on PS2. why dont we take the best on ps2 to compare it with the best on DC? its easy taking crappy ports as examples.
4) PS2 is not getting old. it IS old. and when u think about how old it really is, then maybe u will see things on a different perspective.
5) Shenmue 2 superior to anything on PS2????

Didn't Maskrider have pictures comparing SC2 on different platforms, it looks more or less identical on all platforms. If anything the GC version suffers from minor blurriness.
PS2 pics might even look a litle bit clearer than xbox version (Edit for chap: not counting xbox progressive scan 4:3 option)
In light of SC2, there is no doubt PS2 is more than keeping up with xbox and GC.
Back to original topic, I don't think DC in its current form could have rivalled the excisting PS2. But if DC had been released later, at the same time as PS2 with updated specs....it couln't have beaten PS2 in market share then either.

1) it's a really big for us in the UK :?

2) PS2 does not lack 60hz(only lazy ass devs whom refuse to implement it *cough* Square *cough*). it's pretty spot on to state that DC games tended to be more colorful tho.

3) makes sense.

4) *looks at SH3*...not bad for an old timer

Shenmue 2 is brought up alot, but to be honest it's the art directiona nd design in crafting a believable world for the player rather than anything it's doing graphically that earns it's AAA status.

nobody sinks that kind of investment into a title like this anymore, and looking at sega now it's understandable.

you have got to be kidding me.....

*looks at EtM*

wtf did they do will all that money?

You gotta be joking....

Keeping it simple, a direct port of a game fully optimized for PS2 to the Xbox is capable of running at what 3X the resolution of PS2, in addition to better textures and filtering, in addition to the producers saying they could do more with the Xbox version given time.

Then again, it is Mr Rabit, so cant say im surprise.

Good to see that someone else agrees with me on the clear IQ of DC, something that PS2 has not matched. ;)

VF4 on DC????? WOOT! Need to get some screens!!!!

well, most of the budget was spent on the exclusive footage.... well, it looks to me like they spent £19.999.999 on the footage and £1 on the game

well SC2 is hardly blowing my brains out here. but where did the you get 3X res increase from?

better comparsons are multi platform titles which are scaled down a la Splintercell.

Yep SC2 was a native System246 game yet the Xbox PORT still looks better.

AND everyone should bow before this because...............

hello... NEWSFLASH: the xbox is newer and bigger and better than PS2!! YAY!!

it is SUPPOSED to make games look better, why would people want to buy a console thats not more powerful than 2 year old competition?

Hey Mr Simon F, cant you tell us more about the DC technicalities? It be nice to know. ;)

I think he pretty much covbered it on his homepage (try a search)
that or look up powerVR2 docs floating around the web

well londony, you should realize that there is someone else in this topic who still believes SC2 proves that PS2 is more than keeping up with XB/GC, never mind that the Xport SC2 simply outres the original optimized version. :D

You see thats why i hate certain PS2 fanbois who couldnt "let it go"

sweetie, all Rabid was saying is that SC2 for Xbox doesnt KILL the PS2 version. thats it.
no one is saying the PS2 version looks better than the Xbox version (although it does look better than the GC version).
all the guy's saying is that a simple increase in resolution is not KILLING the PS2 version.
oh, and it's not 3x. the 720p in SC2 is not 1204x720. its more like 920x720.
and thats not even 2x the resolution.

Res does matter imo. Very much so.

In any case SC2 is a PS2 optimize port(maxxed out) and the fact that Xbox can do it and bettAR! Not bad considering that most, if not all, ports to PS2 are pisspoor.

don't wan't to sound like a scratched record here but what your basis of the 'optimised' assertion?

besides it appears to be relatively trivial for xBox to trible the framebuffer size of PS2 ports consider it's not using bandwidth guzzling framebuffer effects.
