Future of 3D gaming and media *spawn

Gah… I hope your relatively positive comments for 3D setup means you really like the products ! Would be in time to play Crysis 2 too. It'd be sad if you hate them, and adjust your feedback because of hateful comments.

Take the comments to mean, if you enjoy 3D on an LCD or Plasma you will enjoy 3D on a projector even more OR if your only experience with 3D "in the home" (Best Buy/Media Markt) and you are underwhelmed/hate it, then try viewing on a projector based setup in those same places and see what you think. Regrettably(?) 3D really does "need" a larger screen to be enjoyed and/or closer seating distance. 24" screens even from only a foot away are just not going to sate anyone (I don't think). For the energy conscious...well, I can only say, offset how power hungry 3D is  across the CE spectrum with limiting something else...

Ill be picking up the acer h5360 shortly to do along with my 3d plasma. Besides the screen size, is the crosstalk non-existent also? Ive heard zero cross talk is a big benefit with DLP tech. Ideally i wanted one of those mitsubishi rear projection dlp sets, cant get them over here though.

Assuming you can deal with the strict placement needs of the Acer and it will be in the same room as the plasma, I would use the plasma for 2D and the Acer for 3D. The blacks on the plasma...the Acer won't even be able to come close.

...If you can't buy DLP TV I suppose you aren't from CONUS , this also restricts the screens you can buy , and please, forget about white in an untreated room, won't work with 3d games.

Actually I don't even think that the H5360 can keep up with screen sizes above 80", unless you have a high gain screen. Even then... Well ... I have brightness issues with this silverscreen here, sort of dead end.

There are quite a few reasons I'm going with rear projection and 60" :

Penthouse will launch the world’s first 3D porn channel:
http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/penthouse-will-launch-the-worlds-first-3d-porn-channel/

Penthouse Magazine announced it would launch the first 3D porn channel on March 1. According to its press release, consumers will have access to 30 hours of content that runs from 11pm until 5am and to be refreshed on a monthly basis.

According to PC Mag, adult content providers have been wary about the jump to 3D for the same reason many other distributors are: The demand is still iffy. “We’ve talked about it, but until there’s a [popular] player for home use, it doesn’t make much sense for us [to pursue it],” said a Vivid Entertainment spokeswoman at this year’s AVN conference. She also noted that the accompanying eyewear is “not very sexy.”

If adult content providers can find a strong 3D following, it would be in luck. It’s been increasingly difficult to get people to pay for porn, and a branded channel with material consumers can’t access could help distributors increase their profits. Of course, there’s also the possibility people won’t be willing to shell out for the stuff – free is a pretty difficult price to beat.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ent...-video-channel-netflix-streaming-for-3ds.html

Nintendo on Wednesday said it will launch a dedicated channel featuring short form 3-D videos and movie trailers for its 3DS handheld game console, set to hit stores later this month.

...

Reggie Fils-Aime, head of Nintendo's U.S. operations, said the 3DS will be able to support Netflix's instant streaming service and, by late May, be able to connect to the Web via 10,000 wireless Internet hot spots hosted by AT&T.

The Japanese game company also said it will launch eShop, an online marketplace similar to Apple's iTunes app store, to sell downloadable games for its 3DS.

Set to go on sale in the U.S. on March 27 for $250, the 3DS features two screens, one of which displays stereoscopic 3-D images that can be viewed without glasses. Nintendo said it will distribute a number of handpicked 3-D videos as well as 3-D movie trailers to the device beginning in late May.

But Fils-Aime emphasized that "the primary function of the 3DS is to play games." About 18 games, priced at $40 apiece, are slated to launch with the device later this month, including Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter IV 3D.

May be Nintendo should focus portable 3D on some content first (e.g., watching 3D movies):
http://kotaku.com/#!5776305/why-i-stopped-playing-the-3ds-in-3d

Before the 3DS launched, there were reports on how it takes twice as much effort for human eyes to reproduce the 3D effect. I've found this to be true. Eye strain has left me feeling like I'm cross-eyed (I'm not, so do not worry). I've been trying to figure out why I'm experiencing this. Of course, it's no doubt a side-effect of autostereoscopy. But I've been wondering if there is something intrinsic to the way that the 3DS is set up that makes players (read: me) more susceptible to issues.

The anecdotal conclusion I've reached is that it is the result of having two screens. The top screen can display the 3D effect, while the touch screen is in 2D. Players typically end up using both while playing, but focusing on the top screen. So while playing, players eyes will focus on the 3D, and then have to re-focus on the 2D as they use the touch screen. This focusing, re-focusing and then focusing again could be the cause of issues I'm having.

The other issue is that the 3DS requires a sweetspot for the 3D effect to be viewed. So you must stay in the same position to view the 3D effect. Shifting position might mean that you have to tweak the 3D effect. Even pressing buttons on certain games, thereby causing the handheld to move slightly, can impact the 3D effect. This makes it difficult to relax — like listening to music and constantly have to turn up and turn down the volume. You can't focus on simply playing.

When the 3DS launched, many Twitter users complained of eye strain, so others do seem to be affected by the 3D effect. I'm finding particular difficulty with the Professor Layton game — reading text in 3D hasn't been fun — and with the special over-the-shoulder "3D view" in Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition. The traditional Super Street Fighter IV view in 3D is far more manageable. But even Nintendo's own efforts, like the on-board games and Nintendogs + Cats, are causing my eyes to work hard to produce the effect.

The dual screen is the biggest issue here I'm sure. I'm hearing lots about that from impressions everywhere. They should make it a policy to only use the 3D screen for some games.

http://www.twice.com/article/464659-DirecTV_Belts_Out_April_3D_Offerings.php

DirecTV will further expand its 3D programming options this spring with an exclusive, U.S. 3D broadcast of the full-length opera Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia, and several Hollywood movies, all on the DirecTV Cinema platform.

The opera, which was directed by British filmmaker Mike Figgis, tells the tale of murder, torture and incest as it follows one of history's first crime families.

It will be performed by the English National Opera (ENO), and stars soprano Claire Rutter, American tenor Michael Fabiano and will be conducted by Paul Daniel.

...

The new 3D Hollywood movies, meanwhile, include "Piranha 3D," "Jackass 3D" (March 8), "Tangled 3D" (March 29), and "Tron: Legacy 3D" (April 5), for $6.99 each.

Uncharted 3 shown in 3D:
http://kotaku.com/#!5779624/if-uncharted-3-doesnt-make-me-want-3d-gaming-what-will

Nathan Drake is surrounded by flame, it pops and sputters, licking out of the television toward me.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception should be the winning argument for gaming in 3D. It is spectacular. In the moments of gameplay we watch while crowded in a second-floor meeting room at San Francisco's posh W Hotel, that extra visual dimension is put to good use. Holes in the wall of the conflagrant chateau drop away from the screen, showing distant enemies. The burning beams upon which Drake balances show a path deep into the room. When Drake momentarily loses his balance and his view sinks toward the fall, the room offers a nearly vertigo-inducing view of that drop.

This is 3D put to great use, not the 3D of movies like The Green Hornet, which seemed only to be there to get viewers to wear glasses and watch credits float in front of a movie screen.

But despite its good use, I'm not convinced this is something I want, let alone need.

...

EDIT:
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/uncharted-3-d-preview-drake-drop-distance/

When I say Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception has the best stereoscopic 3D presentation I've seen so far, I don't mean to imply that I'll shut my laptop after I complete this sentence and dash out the door to buy a 3DTV (an inconsiderate and fatal idea, given that I'm writing this from inside an airplane). The work done by Naughty Dog, with 3D incorporated from an early stage of development, is not an effective sales pitch for the technology -- and that's why it's good. The effect is subtle, unobtrusive, useful, and very distant from the eye-blasting nonsense of what you would derisively label a "sales pitch."

...

So, what's the catch? Well, there's a notable loss of brightness in the 3D image (this was best illustrated in last year's Tron: Legacy, if you viewed the 2D sections without the glasses), and, from what I could perceive, a lack of anti-aliasing in distant parts of the scenery. I was expecting the framerate to take a hit (you have seen what Uncharted 3 looks like, right?), but was surprised to see how smooth it stayed doing during the entirety of the demo.

Even if you don't end up using it, the 3D mode in Uncharted 3 brings a free bonus: according to Evan Wells, the performance and optimization demands of 3D on an already complex engine has resulted in better performance in the 2D version. I imagine that benefit will be seen by the majority of Uncharted 3 players, who can join the 3D crowd in thanking Naughty Dog for being respectful enough of its own game to not repackage it as a 3D sales pitch.

http://www.twice.com/article/464963-CEA_Seeks_Proposals_For_3D_Glasses.php

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) said Tuesday it has started a new standards process for 3D glasses and is seeking proposal for 3D active eyewear using an infrared synchronized interface.

The CEA said it is encouraging interested parties to join the 3D Technologies Working Group, R4WG16.

"The expanding presence of 3DTV in the home makes the need for interoperable 3D glasses more urgent than ever," stated Brian Markwalter, CEA research and standards VP. "As the hub of technology industry innovation, CEA is the logical host for such a crucial effort. Industry participation will help meet consumer demand and expectations regarding 3D interoperability in the home."

Downloads of the formal Active Eyewear Standards IR Sync Request for Proposal (RFP), are available at the CEA website or by contacting Alayne Bell at abell@ce.org, or (703) 907-5267, and should be submitted to the CEA by 5 p.m. EST, March 31.

etc. etc. etc.

Looks like my long wait will be over soon. Will grab 27" if I still can't get 30" by June.

So it has been a couple months since we re-did our setup

We do still like 3D but the content is non-existent and what makes 3D even more frustrating in that just because it was 3D in the theatre does not mean that it will be 3D come disc release. Some of this looks to be distributor based e.g. Cars is in 3D in the UK but not in the US. Narnia which had 3D showings here is a standard BD disc not sure if it is 3D elsewhere.

3DS:
For the most part we keep the 3D on full except Ghost Recon since it added nothing of value that we could see. I mentioned this in a different thread but if you have a DS I don't think it is worth the cost of upgrading unless there is an "amazing" trade-up deal. I say that having gone from DS Lite to 3DS I would imagine DSi owners might have fewer reasons for upgrading.

Lot's of progress made here over last few weeks/months:

Acer 27" 3D monitor should be launched in US this month (last week ?). I'm trying to check it out.

I think there is also a rumor about 3D update for Xbox 360 (coming E3).

Content-wise, I think Samsung has added a new 3D VOD channel (Will provide link later).

Listening to a market report I just heard 13 3D titles releasing this summer (US) and 37 for all of 2011 (highest number ever).

That said, I still say there is a dearth of content.
