Formula 1 - 2008 Season

hang on if lewis cant set up the car how did he do it last year considering alonso wouldnt share any data with him - it could just be hard to set up

Due to McLaren's equality policy, Alonso's engineers probably had to share with Hamilton's engineers.

TBH, that "Alonso won't share anything with Lewis" didn't come until quite late in the season - around the same times when Lewis's struggling started

He struggled in the races, but come on, was it really his fault McLaren told him to stay out on tires that had the canvas showing.

He consistently out qualified Alonso last season especially at the end.

Roll out your pre-prepared criticism of Lewis explaining it, despite you just saying otherwise.

We get it, you hate Hamilton, let it go.

Lewis and Heikki are lamenting how hard their McLarens are to set up. Methinks the team is sorely missing Fernando because of Lewis' and Heikki's problems (inability?) to get the setup right.
Oh dear.

OK, this has nothing to do with the changed wheelbase on the McLaren, which has now changed the dynamic from being very good in the twisty sections (last year) to being less good in tight corners this year and much better in the fast corners.

Ed over at the Times has a good blog entry on this:

Why would they change that dynamic then when they did so well last year?

Why would they change that dynamic then when they did so well last year?
Probably a number of factors - Ferrari being significantly faster on some circuits last year and, I guess from Martin's reply, one of the reasons why they were rougher on their tyres last year was because their car wasn't as good in fast corners. From the tone of it from the initial races they are saying that they are much better in the fast corners (and hence easier on the tyres now) but they have got to improve the car for slow corners and also learn how to set it up.

Can Kovy win tomorrow? Will Massa dominate as he as done for 75% of the events in Turkey so far? Does Kimi have something up his sleeve? Will it rain?

Unless Massa make a driving error I expect him to win it. Now will this be the start of Ferrair-McLaren front row I need to see.

What the hell were McLaren smoking ?! I have no idea why Kovalainen's race was f**** up, but maybe they had good reasons, but I fail to see the reason to do 3 stops - Hamilton easily holded Kimi for 13 laps with supposed "bad tyres" without even sweating.
they just had to put soft tyres on 2nd stop - he'd have 10-15sec ahead of Massa...

This time Kimi's strategy to start with few tubes of gasoline did not pay back - driving behind Kubica denied any chance to go up.
Oh, and Massa did what was best for him but not for the team, I don't believe he did his best to hold Hamilton. 1 more lap would give better chances for double win

Tyre issues forced them to three stops.

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/67338

Dennis revealed after the race that concerns about the structural integrity of their tyres were the reason behind choosing the unusual three-stop strategy.

"It is a little unfortunate for Heikki," said Dennis. "He got clipped by Kimi at the beginning and cut a sidewall and saw the tyre was deflating so he had to stop for tyres.

"And with Lewis we had a bit of a structural concern on the tyres which we discovered in practice and we discussed it with Bridgestone and took a decision on safety to run three stops.

Still, I think where Lewis was concerned its was probably the better option.

I don't think Kimi would've passed Lewis even if Massa played "the team game" the McLaren raced out of every corner, I think it would've been impossible for Kimi to get a run on him into any corner.

Kovy had suffered a puncture during the first corner scuffle with Räikkönen.

Kimi would have overtook Hamilton during the pitstops if Massa would have slowed Hamilton down. I don't mind though it was not very good racing from Kimi and 3rd is what I think he deserved today although Kovalainen's bad start also affect Kimi alot allowing Kubica and Alonso to pass him, without those I'm certain that it would have been Ferrari 1 and 2.

Yep, with so difficult overtaking, the chance was if he can get ahead of Hamilton by last stop.
After overtaking Massa, Hamilton was like 1 sec/lap faster, and went out after last pitstop 1 sec ahead .... so if Massa has holded 1 more lap... and he could, no one would've blaimed him for defending 1st spot... he just let him go

It was really close to a nightmare, 2 finns ruining each others' race in the first corner...

Anyways, I think most of Kovy's problems this season are due to a heavy fuel load. On lighter load he would have had better start, therefore he would not have been on Kimi's way.

Also with ligher fuel load in races where safety car visits mid race... the lighter your fuel load in the start, the more likely you have already visited the pits before the safety car.

It's really a shame, with better start I think Kovy would have been a strong contender for the win but now his performance was yet again totally hidden to all but most perceptive spectators. Lewis has now a comfortable points lead to Kovy and I guess Macca have no choice but to start favouting Lewis, if they weren't already.

So I'd sadly say Kovy's season, championship wise, is now over.

so if Massa has holded 1 more lap... and he could, no one would've blaimed him for defending 1st spot... he just let him go

And give Kimi 2 extra points? Look at the championship score.
If Massa wants to contend for Ferrari #1 driver for this season, he'd better hope there's someone between him and Kimi when he's winning.

Having Lewis between Massa and Kimi was actually a really good idea for Massa. Worth another 1-2 where Massa wins and Kimi comes in second points wise, actually. I would bet Massa was playing a little bit of a game here and I think it worked exactly like he wanted!
