Koei officially announces the first PS3 title. Titled 'Oni'(tentative), it is described as an action game with strong RPG elements, and a production of 'gaming, cinema and music'. Production costs are estimated at 3 billion yen. (wonder if I miscounted a zero)

The press announcement is still going on.

EDIT: Ok, I didn't miss a zero. That adds up to about 28million USD. Sounds about right for a major next-gen title.

Let me think... a game based on the Chinese or maybe Japanese History. Kessen or Dynasty Warriors kind of game.

With Next gen hardware, games like those could look freaking amazing. I remember when i first saw Kessen and Dynasty Warriors, with all those characters on screen at once, i was amazed! I can only imagine in 2 years time what we'll get...

3 billion yen ~= 28 million US$

How much does an MGS or a Final Fantasy of the current generation cost to develop?

Hopefully, no fog this time. :D

It's based on a script by late Akira Kurosawa, and 3 billion yen is spent on all related production (a film directed by the son of Kurosawa, and a game produced by Koei, and others). It'll be 10 billion yen or something like that for the budget of the game.

Well yeah, i did say "i can imagine.... (with the help of pics)"

Did I just read 2005? So will we see the PS3 release (in Japan most likely) in about a year?

Impossible. It's been clearely established that Cell is horrendously behind schedule, it won't make it's 2007 entrance and has been postponed untill 2018 while being massively outpreformed by that PC-in-a-Box. Ohh, and Panajev will be my bitch when 2005 rolls around, though it will be enjoyable :)

They changed the date now on the website, guess it was a typo by Famitsu, changed to a 2006 release now.

Yet another coverage.

The producer Kou Shibusawa suggests that, though he can tell nothing about the next-gen system by NDA, they develop the new game considering it has overwhelming advancement over PS2 in realtime-rendering power as in the PS-PS2 jump. He also plans sharing CG, modeling data and motion data between the game and the film. Mmm, 'Toy Story'?

Anyway, I doubt they can prepare the both film and game at the rumored launch of PS3 in the Spring 2006, looking the audition announcement of the main actor published in the PR today...

Didn't Bungie make a game a while ago called Oni, which was also an action game with strong RPG elements AFAIR?

Could it be that you mean this game?

Ugh, now I actually realised that this game was indeed by Bungie...
