the ideal would be zero wires, but internal vs external, give me internal anyday. eg take the common notebook im sure many here have used one, its a pain in the ass with a exteneral psu yes, wouldnt it be great just to grab the notebook, pull something out of it + stick that in the wall. or say u had the extra hassle with the extenral psu keep in mind u youve gotta pack that away in the notebook case as well, another component.
i agree the ps3 looks crap but to say the xbox1 looks better is time for walking away saying ok, whilst making finger circular rotation movements in the vicinity of the ear

Looking at the state of your floor, you have bigger issues than WIRES !

Ok, earlier I used the word "magnificent" in describing the PS3 look (because of the "AM Tower" inspiration). It doesn't sound too awkward in Japanese (Li'pana) but I realized after-the-fact that it might sound "Too bold, or goose-bumpy" in English.

Whatever... using some more spare time, I found a few articles related to Xbox 360 design brief. It seems that Xbox 360 is inspried (somewhat) by Porsche 911. It's theme is "playful and organic/mild". Some fun reading...

Funny, I always thought it was inspited by a Dell Optiplex workstation.

LOL. Yes I found that too during my search, but we all know that it's unlikely. A Porsche 911 would be a better source of inspiration (according to the Xbox 360 design company).

The Optiplex and Xbox360 may be done by the same company perhaps ? (I don't know which is released earlier).

great stuff thanks

amazing how much thought and energy (and money) went into the design this time around

miles ahead of the 1st Xbox

At the same time, the team solicited the opinions of Microsoft executives. Jonathan Hayes, the 37-year-old design director for the Xbox platform, didn't show them actual models for fear that each executive would pick one to champion. Instead, he asked them to consider four themes: mild, wild, architectural and organic.

The original Xbox was certainly on the wild end of the spectrum. And, with its complex geometry and lines, it was architectural as well. Should its successor have the same look?

The executives talked about vehicles as a point of comparison. A Hummer had the same wild, architectural sense as the Xbox. On the mild, organic end was the Porsche 911, which had a well-evolved and distilled feel. That's the look the group eventually settled on.

Apple Computer's iPod is mild, executives said. Mild will still look fresh five years from now. Wild and aggressive will seem dated.

Certainly doesn't look that way in the mock-up, and I didn't think they'd announced final design decisions yet, so...
I thought it was common sense with all the ps3's in both SKU's on display during e3 06.

Or you could even go back to e3 05. The silver/chrome peice is the same from the orginal design of the ps3.

BB, I think his point was simply that we don't 'know' anything for sure until November.... things can change somewhat from original designs all the time.

In those pictures where the perspective is not skewed (#2, #9 and #16), the ps3 did not look significantly larger than its counterpart. Some of the pictures were obviously taken at close range from a wide angle to exaggerate PS3's size, especially in #3 where PS3 is a little closer to the camera than the 360. Feels a little sensationalistic, but what do you think?

Yap ! It's also tough because the final decision is usually subjective (and may change day to day). The Xbox 360 looks even better if photographed with the controller and TV remote. But its HD-DVD player feels tacked-on (for obvious reason).

PS3 looks sharp, sophisticated and classy (especially the one with the chrome lining), but the controller is a bit disappointing (It doesn't complete the original design). I have mixed feelings about the Batarang. Now that I know it supports 6-degree of freedom, I feel that the Batarang may be more expressive (e.g., it can act as half a steering wheel for Mario Kart like games).

Apple's design style is not only mild... but minimalist (and subdue). There is no extra color, lines, or face plates (Even the original mouse only had 1 button -- which I hate btw).
But it's a visual statement nonetheless.

Also you can look up how PS3 looked at the recent China Joy event in Shanghai 2 weeks ago.

Again, I doubt the mockup case Games Radar is showing was obtained from Sony since it's questionable to give away a clumsy replica which misrepresents an actual product when they have a better mockup.

My point is the product isn't actually out yet, so there is always room for design changing. If they are sending out mock-ups that look different than previously-seen shots, it's at least enough to make one wonder if they're considering a change.

And what I'm saying is, the design has been the same for well over a year, and with 4 months left to go, I doubt we are going to see a design change. Infact I think they started production on the PS3's and we still see the same design on their website that's updated almost every week or so. I wouldnt go by those mock-ups, as they are not made by Sony. They are made of wood and stickers I beleive, which gives reason to why the chrome peice looks white. But in reality, it's never been white. You orginally said..

Certainly doesn't look that way in the mock-up
...

I'm just hoping they don't go with that color for the drive-bay-cover/top-strip.
And I'm telling you, It's never been that color. It's a mock up, a fake.

And what I'm saying is...!

Stuff?

(BTW: What are you saying is "fake" about it? It's not functional, certainly [of course neither are most or all of those other PS3's shown ;) ], but Sony took pains to make it resemble the PS3 as much as possible, right down to the air venting. Differences aren't necessarily meaningless just for merit of it being a wooden model.)

wood+stickers = fake.

So let me get this straight, you believe a mock up over the real thing? The working, functional ps3 at e3 even looks the same as the pictures me and one posted.

maybe so, but it's still huge and oh my... look at all the vents. :p;)

ok, now I'm just being nasty... no need to take all this so seriously BB....

I'm just pointing out a mistake someone is making Tap In. I've already said I it's your opinion if you dont like the design, I can't knock that. I really dont care if you dont like it. But if your dismissing the design for something thats not actually in the ps3, like the color of the drive slot, then thats another thing. Thats like me saying I dont like the 360 because its yellow and blue, and its not. (obvisouly exaggerated, but just an example)

well personally, I just think that some of the 'defending' going on around here lately is pointless and irritating.

as for the design, now seeing the pictures that ONE posted, it actually looks like a pretty nice piece of equipment.

I agree!, its a relatively simple thing that I'm arguing. The thing is chrome/silver, not white. End of story, not a big deal. Everybody can have a nice day now. :D
