Final Fantasy XII / FF12 revealed [!=56K]

Well there's always the needle and thread. ;) Probably a billion cosplayer sites out there who'll tell you what they did, too.

From 'Magicbox' news:

- In an interview with the Final Fantasy XII developer Yasumi Matsuno, a few new tidbits are revealed about the game:

The game will be in 2 DVDs
Very little love elements in the game
The game style resembles Vagrant Story
Huge world map
Many people will be surprised: "Is this Final Fantasy?"
Tight controls

Do you know what this could mean?? remember how VS played. You had to upgrade your weapons, shields, body armor (helmet, gloves, footwear,..) and even make new ones!

Could this also be the case with FFXII? In some screens you can see that the characters carry shields and heavy armor. I love it! 8)

Yes! I'd like it if the character's attributes will be more tied to the equipment they are carrying, like shields, armour, weapons, amulets etc...

Didn't really like the 'Ability board' in FFX.
It was fun, and building up the characters was interesting, but it always felt like it was in no way connected to the characters and it was a little bit too silly.

I was rather a fan of the Sphere Grid. Why tie your stats to weapons, when it should be the development of characters the determines the directions and what/how they use equipment? (No, I've never been a big fan of all the character-specific stuff.) Sphere Grid made characters able to choose direction and be unique without it being as arbitrary as job-switching-whever-you-feel-like-it. Certainly an amusing and worthy take on it, at least.

8's is by far the weirdest of them, but at least it wasn't just levelling up characters that had set advancement.

I liked the system in FF9 (though I can't remember much details of it).

IMO it is more 'realistic' if some character attributes are tied to their equipment, like attack strength and defence from hits and new magic abilities. Those that can be obtained by equipping.

But attributes like magic and weapon skills, speed, stamina etc. would be well suited to a Sphere Grid type development. Those that can be improved by learning.

But even in FFX you pretty much got that from equipment modifications anyway. Increading physical and magical offense and defense, HP, MP, and just about every ability under the sun. They didn't add things like "strength" directly to your stats (since you didn't have any ;) ), but all the points you just mentioned were there. Your character was your character, and your items enhanced all the "normal" things they would, as well as offering a myriad of abilities and combinations.

As you can tell, I rather liked the item modding part as well. ^_^ I didn't do an immense amount of it (since I tend to speed through these games to keep them more challenging), but I pulled off some fun stuff, and know it had PLENTY more to give.

huh???
FFX DID have strengths points... as well as magic and defense and all the usual... in fact my Auron and Yuna are both maximised to 250 (i think thats the number) strength and magic and they always deal 99999 damage (with damage break or whatever it's called, that allows u to deal more than 9999 damage)

My bad. I've been flip-flopping through games and mis-remembering stuff. I just knew that the weapons didn't go into stright statistic adds and was applying it backwards. (At least no evasion, no accuracy, no agility...) What game AM I thinking of? Dungeon Siege? Ah, hardly matters.

well, Kingdom Hearts (as simplistic and elementary as the system was) had a system like that, a weapon would add HP, MP, Strength or AP points to the character...

i cant actually remember the effect weapons had on characters in FFX... gosh and i spent 140 hours on it... :D

Yes, the shadows are circular from what I can see.

Here is a scan from me on that part

Interesting Katakana

here are their names from top to bottom

(?)Ashi/Atsui (perhaps ashley)

(?)Furaso (Flas?)

These may be early beta shots of the game just to show off some of the stuff. Until more is revealed about the game and more is shown as in clear pictures that are of a better resolution and in game footage maybe it can then be better judged what the shadows will be like.
Did you see Maskrider's scan? I can clearly make out circular shadows just from that, so no need for high res press kit photos. So far the shadows need work; let's hope they improve for the final release.

Official FF12.com site updated.

The background is that of a warring world, with a great empire bent on conquering the world. The hero is an air pirate, with dreams of freeing his own people and country from the empire. The heroin is the true heiress to a country, working with the resistance to liberate her country.

From the site - "The story of the world changes as they meet..."(insert rolling-eyes, sick of corniness/cheesiness, wants to throw up emoticon.)

One more personal complain - There are close-up shots of the protaganist on the site, and I am oh so sick of sissy protagonists that FF artists seem to have taken a fondness to.

Personally, i LOVE epic stories, although FFX went into roll-eye-dom many many times.
By contrast, the epic-ness of Kingdom Hearts (and somewhat ICO and ZOE2) gave me emotions that FFX never could, mostly because they never went TOO far, or at least not as far as FFX... i mean, death of a GOD...? FFX was an undeniably great game, by far the game i spent the most time playing in my entire life, but the story..... jesus it was like climbing the Pyramids of Giza, it went up and up and up, kill the president of whateverness, kill the big monster who turns out to be [someones] dad, kill THE FRIKKING GOD..... Definately rolle-eye material.....
Whereas Kingdom Hearts just flowed easily and emotionally, surely never going into roll-eye-dom especially for the (IMO) great implementation of Disney characters with Square-type epic-ness.
ICO was just art. Period. Epic in its own little way.
ZOE2 was just so beautiful i never had the time to roll my eyes at the story........ :D

Ah, I think my post might have caused some confusion. Apparently the content was not supposed to go live yet, but I got in when it went live unexpectedly for an hour or so. Anyway, some sites including gaming-age and ruliweb have captured various images.

Details about the graphics engine have emerged. Apparently the graphics engine sports half the polygon count of FFX's engine, opting instead to focus on textures and lighting. Not to make a fetish out of shadowing and such, but frig, their increased focus on lighting couldn't have resulted in better shadows? Game's about 70% complete, meaning there's still time to rectify them, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
