Impressive numbers. Very healthy console generation overall.

Amazingly the 360 went up 12% over last year and still lost to both competitors.

I guess as long as 2008 > 2007, MS has to be happy. A lot of people predicted the 360 had peaked in 2007, but so far there's no sign of that.

PS3 continues to benefit from being the best Blu Ray player available as well as the only next gen format in this generation.

ms exec told reuters that inventory should be back to normal in april. so march is a wash, too.

I don't think that March is a wash. I take his comment as saying there is no way in hell we will run out of consoles GTA4 month

NR Frontlines: Fuel of War (Xbox 360) 99,900 87,400 +14.30%
NR Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village (DS) 91,000 107,000 -14.95%
NR Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (DS) 50,300 60,900 -17.41%
NR No More Heroes (Wii) 37,000 63,800 -42.01%

PS3: Very good numbers and it's back in the fight.
360: Good numbers. Software dominates stupid amounts.
Wii: This gen is sooo over. We have a winner folks. Deal with it.

There is no shortage for 360 in March.. A quick check to all retailers show they have 360 in stock. However, 360 has not been doing well in Amazon. I know Amazon is not the best indicator. There were a couple of months in which PS3 was on the top of 360 while 360 again sold more than PS3 in those months. However, this time PS3 is constantly in the first top 10 while 360 is between 40-50. So, I will not be surprised if PS3 beats 360 once more in March despite there is no shortage.

However, it is interesting the MS rep points April for the recovery. There might be something coming in April, either a price cut or a hardware upgrade (hopefully both :) ).

Finally, 360 is still selling great. Despite the momentum PS3 got from the bluray being the victor of high-def var, the difference between them is only 30K.

360 - 1.1 Million units of software sold
PS3 - 233k units of software sold
Wii - ? can't find the number

these sales were from February when there were 360 shortages the first couple of weeks.

good for PS3 to pull a solid Feb number no doubt in part thanks to Blu ray.... still software (besides DMC4 is weak)

I still expect March or at least April to see 360 pull the margin back up above PS3 with GTA4 and solid inventory numbers (and maybe price drop?)

ms exec told reuters that inventory should be back to normal in april. so march is a wash, too.

Personally I am expecting 360 to be back in the lead in March. February stock was almost nonexistent the first three weeks. March so far stock has been plentiful with no signs of depletion (that I have seen).

Of course my other theory was that MS expected to lose Feb/March (but not necessarily due to shortages), has the price cut planned for April, so would use the stock thing as an excuse for losing March, before presumably bouncing back after the cut of course

But I think theory one is more likely now, seeing as 360 cut the gap a bit last month.

PS3 numbers dont seem all that dependant on 360, and it's definitly it's strongest ever. Each price cut led to a new higher baseline of PS3 sales, and now most likely because of Blu Ray winning yet another higher baseline has been established. It seems 360 will remain popular as well though. All win, dont we hate that :)

I've come to a new general theory on console sales. With PS3's new popularity, I think 360+PS3 together basically now equal the numbers PS2+Xbox used to do. The difference is the Wii truly does bring in new gamers. The Wii replacing the struggling Gamecube from last gen, while the traditional PS2/Xbox market now serviced by 360/PS3 is just as strong as ever. Overall this means a lot of growth. Just to beat you over the head some more comparing this gen to last, it's like PS3/360 ~ PS2/XBox, Wii>>>>>Gamecube.

Software on PS3 doesn't have to hit the top 10 (looking at #10's numbers) in order to be relatively pulling its weight. Judging by comments from sonycowboy on neoGaf (who has full npd access), it sounds like it was a good month for PS3 software, proportionately speaking.

I'm surprised the DMC4 gap was so small. Worldwide the PS3 version has probably outsold the 360 version by a much healthier margin than I'd have expected. I suppose that it's seen as more of a 'playstation' game might be one cause for that.

yep I just read that although he does go on to say that the software tie in ratio for 360 is breaking all records. I am sure PS3 is holding its own but 360 evidently, still outsells it by a reasonable margin relative to its install base.

Close month between 360 and PS3. I still think anyone looking for a winner between the HD consoles will be disappointed. We haven't had competition this good in the console space for a long time. For a guy like me that's taking the "wait and see" approach, it makes it really hard to pick one over the other. Still leaning 360.
