Famitsu gives DOA 4: 10/9/9/9

girl must win

*I'm not blown away by the visuals and the lag/load times for character choices to come up seems too damn long. The gameplay is DOA (insert #).

On the plus side the only reason I picked this up was because my wife seemed to better at this fighter than any other. Also, after I kicked her into a police car, we had to spend an hour playing the same level just so she could try and get me back, alas it finally happened after she "accidentally" hit pause, kicked me and then I got run over by a taxi.

*I have only played versus mode, I will update/edit if the other modes turn out to change my opinion of the game.

my friend, if I am in situation where I must let my girl friend win so I am free to pick up games she is not good at

Any level with water in DOA4 is absolutely kick ass visually. There are some obvious problems with the game though.

1 - Horrible clipping. By horrible I dont necessarily mean ever present but on several levels hair goes through shoulders, feet go through other feet etc. and its very obvious to the point of distracting. I mean even in character pose mode!

2. No real physics on background objects. Everything that moves within the background that adds visual spice to the game - water, grass, etc has a standard animation when interacted with (for example the animation of splashing water onthe rope bridge level). The water does no react to character movements within it but shows a splash animation when a character is downed. However on teh casino level, when a character steps in a puddle, the water ripples... bizarre.

3.Story mode combo near invincibility. Now I have beaten the game with all characters but darnit if when some very fast character (Bayan, Jann lee) initiates combo you are pretty much at its mercy.

Thast all I have for now. There are some other thoughts I have about the game visually and gameplay but those will have to wait for later I'm tired... Happy New Year!

blakjedi I agree with you on many of your points.

Graphics wise the game truely shines but I did feel the animation should of been better. Collision Detection was questionable as well.

And of course people who have played the series will have to adjust to the counter system and the A.I. is an expert at it even at low levels :) I would give the game a 8.5.

Online is definately a strong point and I have had no issues with lag so far. (Hint use a wired controller or plug in your charger :)) IMO it really seems to make a difference especially online. Try it yourselves and tell me what you guys think.

Beautiful Graphics but disappointed

Graphics are very beautiful but even old Xbox (733mhz x86+FPU) PS2 (300mhz MIPS+FPU+VU) game Baldur's Gate has wave and ripple water so very unfortunate no real-time wave and ripple on much much more powerful 3.2Ghz CPU with 3 FPU+VMX system. Also collision is not so great and characters have not enough details. What about self-shadow? Very odd. Maybe too much rush for release!

So is this DoA:U or DoA4 :p

I think the screens with the blur (which are obviously captured specifically to show it off) are the ones that really show "next-gen" DoA. But I take the stance, if you have an X360 you may as well enjoy the graphical upgrade no matter how small. A HDTV makes a big difference as well, I guess.

Team Ninjas problem was they really pushed the original Xbox. They're their own worst enemy.

Not so great for next gen.

Graphics are very nice and clear because of HD resolution but even PS2 fighter game has self-shadow on character. Xbox360 CPU is >10x power of PS2 CPU but no shadow on character! I feel this is developer mistake for missing this simple effect. What about animation and physics? Ok, but not "next gen". Maybe DOA5 in 2007. I feel DOA4 is like Xbox game with HD resolution and little better effects like better water reflection, not even waves and ripples. Very disappointing. But I recommend to you to play Condemned. It is much better.

Perhaps they don't want any selfshadowing, perhaps it doesn't fit in how they want their game to look, just like how they don't want realistic skin/facial features etc.

Maybe

Maybe what you say is true my friend but I feel many simple effects are missing. Also waves and ripples in water are not available. This is no problem for powerful CPU like Xenon. So I feel it is probably developer mistake or maybe not enough time beause of too soon deadline because I feel developer will prefer self-shadow and 3D water effect. This is my opinion but others may have others opinions.

ihamo just stop it. It's obvious you haven't played the game. There are "waves and ripples" that you keep going on about in the cherry blossom stage. The waves and ripples are about in line with Kameos.

Also DOAU has 720P support no?

No. It supports up to 480p. I have DOAU and it looks no where as good as that on my HDTV. DOA4 is on a completely different level. Sure the character models are similar, but the details, animation and backgrounds are vastly improved.

Yes, of course is improved my friend. What I am disappointed is just better version of same features of old games. For true next-gen I hoped for even old-gen feature like self-shadow and 3D water, also collision is better but still many problems. Maybe I have high hopes but to me I feel Xbox360 is too powerful DOA4 graphics and so I hope DOA5 is better.

Are you sure they're from 2 different games?
That's just emphasizing the main problem... for a fighting game, the characters don't look that much improved. And since, no matter how nice the background, you're going to be staring at the two fighters 90% of the time, everything else blurs out. You can certainly see the engine improvements on the wood-grain and such, but when the two main things ("you" and "your opponent") don't look all that different...

I'm encouraged to hear that the sub-par gameplay has gotten a good overhaul (hopefully for the better overall, but the jury's not in on that yet ;) ), but graphically they should have spent 50% more time on the fighters, and 50% less time on the backgrounds.
