F.E.A.R. 2 Project Origin

My gun sound dissapeared for a few seconds on PS3 demo and after that, the entire sound (it came back after a load). Heh, i instantly remembered the good old PC gaming days (my on-board crap of a sound card always gave me trouble) :D
Hope it's just a demo issue, if not i'm seriously thinking in playing it on Xbox360.

Better performance on the 360 wouldn't suprise me, but I didn't think the framerate was a big issue on the PS3 (runs well enough for me with some minor dips here and there, kinda like Condemned 2) and all the post-processing effects as well as the rather bleak color palette hid most of the jaggies anyway.
I would have tried the 360 demo as well, but it's only for Gold members at the moment.

To be honest , I found the dips in some moments really annoying...also when didn't happening anything and the torch light on (same problem on condamned 2 ps3) adding more again even in a smooth area

I really enjoyed playing the PC demo this evening - the end section provides a very satisfying sense of power and the audio only intensifies that with great clanking/thudding sound (if you've played it, you'll know what I mean).

Movement and gun play feels really fluid.

I really like the look. There's a lot of clutter in the levels, more than I remember from FEAR and the suite of graphics effects adds up quite nicely. I actually like the stencil shadows.

I've got a severe hitching issue though. It seems it's doing texture swaps. Monitoring memory usage using ATI Tray Tools's OSD, each hitch is accompanied by a change in free video memory, e.g. from 237 to 345MB. Sigh. Driver problem? I'm on 8.12 I think...

I'm running the game at maximum graphics settings on X1950Pro 512MB at around 30-70fps at 1024x768 4xMSAA 16xAF.

I expect the "wide" aspect ratio even on 4:3 monitors is going to cause an outbreak of internet rage. I like the wide field of view for FPS gaming, so I feel at home and if I'm honest I hanker after a 19:10 monitor so the wide aspect ratio (letterboxing) seems fine. Helps performance too

I got some mixed feeling about this demo. For starters the graphics, they've been upgraded in places but in others they're lacking. The textures on some objects got a nice overhaul but other objects and textures look like they were ripped straight from the original. They also took out the option for soft shadows, which if you ask me if kind of like taking a step backwards. Also, the flashlight still doesn't cast shadows (I believe a modder added it to the original by editing a certain file so apparently it's not that hard). And while the game has AO, it's got to be the fugliest looking I've ever seen (e.g. grainy, jaggy, and still shows fully while a bright flashlight is on it). There's also the fact that there's no way currently to turn off the film grain (I actually like it but others seem very bothered by it and it'd be nice if there was an option).

There's some other things that bug me about it that makes the game seem like a console port, in a way. First of all, the game is letterboxed for 16:10, 4:3, and
5:4. Again, I felt like it took a step back there since the first properly supports widescreen. They also took out one of the most helpful moves in the game, the lean.

As for the game itself though, it seemed pretty fun (love the gore!) and since the first is one of my favorite FPS's of all time, I'll definitely be picking this up on day one (hope they fix the issues though before launch).

That could also be the strange menus for a PC game.
More and more multi-platform games using the same menus, it's annoying, a mouse is much more effective than a pad, having to hit a small arrow to chose YES before clicking the label (ie YES) is pure crap, seriously.

Tried the demo 2 more times, still too much paranormal, but the gfx are rather good. I get some hiccups at times that I can't explain (guessing some background loading).
For some reason is seemed that my CPU wasn't put to good use, looked like it was running at 100% + 50%...
There are too many keys, AZERTY QSDFG XBJ ALT SPACE CONTROL SHIFT TAB... argh! [And those are just the ones you need regularily.]
Guess they didn't understand the Wii appeal :p (Simple is beautiful !)
(It must be the first time I complain about a game having too many keys ^^)

Not so bad after all, but I won't buy it at release. :(
(I was really excited about it, I think I'm gonna play F.E.A.R. again to compensate the disappointment.)

Tried the demo, unfortunately didn't enjoy it at all. Unrelatedly, for some reason the game gave me PC vibe, until power suit section, that is.

Anyway, FEAR 1 was average. I really like Condemned 2 though for various reason. So I'm still hopeful for FEAR 2.

That said, I absolutely hate dream like sequences and they should be banned for good. The whole survival horror aspect is unnecessary. I don't get why Monolith insist on those mechanics. They seem to be much more capable than that.

Lol, this games in big trouble then. Console gamers don't like it because it feels like a PC game and PC gamers don't like it because it feels like too much of a console port!

I said "unrelatedly", didn't I? ;)

Lol, I missed that, nevermind!

I see what you saying though, the game does come across as a PC shooter.

But on the other hand, there are certain elements that have been very consolised.

i.e. the menu's mentioned before are a big give away. And frankly, the lack of ability to turn up the graphics. FEAR sold itself as a boundry pushing game but FEAR 2 doesn't look that much better IMO and PC hardware has moved on more than 3 years since its release. This game certainly isn't stressing high end PC's in the slightest anymore.

I don't know if it felt too PC. It felt old-fashioned, since there's no regenerating health bar, so you have to go around and hunt for armor and health packs. Last game I played where I had to do that was HL2:Ep2, which is very much a PC game, true. Mind you, I'm not saying that old-fashioned is bad.

I managed to get the sound working. Simply uninstalling my sound driver and allowing Windows to re-install it solved the problem. Wierd!

Anyway, the game is MUCH better with sound. Its pretty damn scary actually. I played all the way to the end this time and i'm pretty impressed. Graphics are nice but gameplay is pretty basic (but thats all their aiming for so no problem there).

This isn't really my type of game any more though so i'll probably give it a miss.

I think the classic heakth pack approach works great in a game like FEAR. When I played the first one on the hardest difficulty setting on the 360, the limited resources almost turned the gameplay into classic survival horror-style. Every health pack was a precious gift, and it made passing some of the tougher fire fights that much more satisfying.

I just finished extraction point so the original is still fresh in my mind. Played the demo on both the PS3 and PC and I must say there's something for playing this on a 30" with surround sound. I only got the chills while playing on the PC. The HUD and menus are certainly consolized and the missing flashlight shadows is a pretty big omission but it seems like a decent enough sequel. What's with the friggin character bob and all the blinking lights though? Made me feel like I was on a rollercoaster, nearly barfed on my screen. And it's definitely no Crysis when it comes to stressing your graphics card.

I quite liked the demo.
Although there were some slowdowns (i played on PS3), it's nothing serious.
Game is much easier than FEAR1. If i played on kb&m i probably wouldn't need to use slow-mo at all (which was mandatory in all gunfights in FEAR 1).
Game really isn't scary at all, i expected it to be much more frightening.
I'll probably pick this up. I need something to play until Killzone 2 arrives.

... One of the few games (if not the only) in recent memory that made me a bit nauseous, or motion sick. Not exactly sure what it is. I noticed that the PC's movements seemed to have a strange "bob" to it, probably to try and get rid of the unnaturally smooth "glide" motion seen in many FPSs (as if you're sliding across the ground). ...

I feel the same after playing the demo. I immediately started another FPS to compare. Although the other FPS also have some camera ups and downs, it's a bit more subtle. In the F.E.A.R. 2 PS3 demo, I feel the shaky cam is overdone. The flickering lights doesn't make me feel any better either. For some unknown reason, I'd also occasionally fail to walk in straight lines in this demo. May be the shaky cam led to some automatic but inappropriate responses from me, like wrongly interpreting the visual cue as going off track and unwittingly shifting my thumb to compensate. :???:

Yeah, I did too. At first I thought I was accidentally pressing one of the shoulder buttons causing a slight side-step. But there is no corresponding shoulder button for that. Never did figure out why that happened. :???:

Demo was underwelming, played the PS3 version. What i liked in the originial title when it came out was the amount of debris and damage that happend when you shoot the walls.

In f.e.a.r. 2 this seems to be completely gone, or the PS3 version is really crap, because there is less debris and uglier bulletholes than there was in the originial game on my X360
