Exclusive next gen games

Good morning people,

This recent events and unveiling have turned my brain on for the first time in months, and a new question just came to me.

Seeing how X360 and PS3 will be quite similar in performance and output (one favouring some aspects of graphics over others and vice versa), am i the only one who thinks that both MS and Sony absolutely need exclusive games to differentiate themselves from each other? Even more so than the last generation.

In the end, having 2 consoles which are very similar in output and features is good, but if they end up sharing 90% of their games, what will they be able to do to get one customer to buy their console over their competitor?

Also, apart from exclusive games, additional features that are not available on the other console will be paramount to attract customers.

I really think that the next generation will be a very fierce battleground, and it can only be VERY good news for us. Both MS and Sony will be battling each other not on the hardware (because ultimately there will be little difference between, say, Burnout5 on X360 and PS3), but on new and exciting features that we haven't seen before, and exclusive games you can't get on the other console.

(I kept Revolution out cause it's still the wild card and no one knows what the hell it's gonna be, apart from an online Bargain Bin for 20yo Nintendo games)

yes good points and exactly what i was thinking.

it's all good for the customers.
but i think it's already the case now , i had an xbox for certain games,
i get bored with them and wanted to play GT4
so i sold my xbox bought myself a ps2. and if i get bored with that, god knows i buy another xbox and ditch my ps2 again.

but if microsoft didnt had for example dvd playback back when it launched i would have gone with ps2 because i knew it had something extra. it could play dvds (i'm just giving an example before someone starts bitching about DVD's and whatnot)

some people buy every console
some people buy the console they think most of their favorite games /genres are coming to
some people buy a console purely on hardware spec
and some buy them if it fits in their budget

See, I don't see this as good for customers. If we have two very similar machines, if the games are exclusive, I need two boxes under my TV to play them all. If the hardware's so similar I'd rather just have one box with all the games on. I would no more want a PC and a Macintosh just to use certain software when both machines are equally capable. It's in having different interfaces that differentiates these machines. Neither would I want two cars just because one can only travel south of where I live and one travel north. If one car has the hardware capability to drive wherever I want, it shouldn't be limited in where it can take me by some software or other restriction. It's no different to needing different mobile phones to access different mobile networks. If one phone has the capability to access all networks, I don't want to have to carry around T-Mobile, O2 and Orange phones, three copies of the same hardware, just to use those respective networks.

If there's nothing to differentiate the hardware, I hope games are cross-platform. There haven't been many exclusives this gen that I've missed out on account of not having the right consolem but there's NO WAY I'm going to splash a few hundred bucks on hardware akin to hardware I already own just to play a couple of exclusive games.

The PS3's ugly wastebasket mount paper shredder design and hideous boomerang controller is enough to repell even the most diehard SONY fan. ;)

Heh, I'm not a die-hard sony fan but I still want one.....I really have no problem with the console design it self. The controller, yeah, need some work. I read some where that the design was conceptual so who knows if they'll make any changes or not.

Anyways, MS has good amount of exclusives I want to play....PGR3, GOW and anything for Mistwalker :)

i'l probably will have both . maybe not at the same time but since I sell and buy at a fast rate 8)

One-console future!!! :p

But seriously, I agree, London-boy. And I'd say that it's up to Microsoft to try and secure more exclusives, 'cause Sony's already got the lion's share of games and developers.

But then, Live provides a unique experience that's most likely going to be more fleshed out than any online system Sony puts together. This could be a great selling point for Microsoft - or not if they just turn it into a goddamn online shopping center.

Oh well, you can always hide it behind a huge woofer or your TV or so. ;)

They will surely have exlusives and I think that WILL be a big buying argument. MS with Halo 837 and Sony with FF MCMXXXIV etc.

Though Sony has some other stuff up their sleeves as well, HW- and connectivity-wise, but that's too off-topic here.
