Hey I thought it was funny. Just because someone has a different opinion does not make them a troll or trolling.

Was he attacking anyone specificly? I didn't think so. Why were you so offended? :???:

Click on his post history, he has been trolling all the PS3 launch threads with the same BS, over and over. I don't expect you to care much.

...

All I've seen are reports from Australia and France. Anyone have info from other regions?

Apparently they've sold out in Guildford, so a friend just informs me. We also need preorder numbers. If 60% of PS3s were sold through preorder, as some places were suggesting, that'd be 600,000 console sold overnight - the best launch ever, despite no outward visible signs. That'd still be well short of the sort of enthusiam Sony needs, but it'd be far from the 'no PS3s are sold anywhere' story.

Found this at XtremeSystems forums. Looks like Sony was giveing away free 46" HDTVs for the first 1000 PS3 buyers in London and even a free Taxi ride to go with it. Sony must be very desperate to sell PS3.
Apart from being old news, and incorrectly presented (125 TVs, or one for everyone in the line), this isn't a tactic of desperation as they didn't advertise the fact. It wasn't 'Buy a PS3 to be in with a chance of getting a free 46" HDTV'. It was 'So you're here to buy a PS3 because you want one? For turning up, we'll be generous and give you a free TV.' There's no positive upshot to this move, other than those PS3's getting good advertsing with the people who show them to friends. There's not going to be a big rush to get PS3's because free TVs were given away.

an anecdote from Madrid.

So it's my last day in Madrid.

I want to use a public phone but not on the busy streets.

It's about 9:50 AM and I head to the Calle Goya El Corte Ingles, the biggest (and only?) department store chain in Spain, hoping to find one inside by one of the restrooms.

El Corte have clusters of 10-story buildings in several streets throughout the city. There were about 5 or 6 people standing near the door but someone breaks out a cigarette so I head a few doors up and see a queue.

It's a satellite El Corte for just video games with an adjoining mobile phone shop. I'd seen the PS3 ads all over, even at all the Banestos (which I believe is a local bank?) around town but didn't realize the time.

Anyways, about 15-20 people by the time they opened their doors. Most of them headed straight to the cash registers, right by a PS3 kiosk playing Ice Age. The registers had PS3s stacked up but there were also Wiis around too. That's the other thing, a lot of Wii posters around the city too.

But I'm guessing Wii launched awhile ago so PS3 was the new thing.

Finally went back to the big one and found the phone. Afterwards, walking in the second floor, I saw another electronics dept. with games. No line here though.

It's funny, a tour guide said that real estate prices were out of control and most young people were only making about 1000 Euro a month so they'd have to take out a 45-year mortgage or forget about buying an apartment.

So you really wonder about 600 Euro consoles.

good guess :)

"While Sony has set expectations for 1 million units at launch, we believe the amount will be in the 500,000- to 700,000-unit range across all of Europe. We think the shortfall is related more to demand than supply," said analyst Todd Greenwald at brokerage Nollenberger Capital Partners.

..."I'm going to wait, simply because I can't afford a 600-euro price tag in April and the catalogue is largely made up of games that have been out on the Xbox 360 for at least a year. Add to that I can't afford an HD (high-definition) screen," said Jolyon Leonard, a Madrid-based games developer.
Long-term projections from some analysts predict Nintendo's "casual gaming" console, the Wii, will emerge as winner in the current devices race.

allegedly:

UK was "ok"
Spain was "HOT"
Germany was "good"
France was "Bad"

With only three titltes to go, I've slacked off with the bc testing a little and spent some time with the demos. First off: I want more demos! :D
Preferably not racers though. I have Ridge Racer 7, Motorstorm (full game should arrive tomorrow, there went my freebie voucher), GTHD, and F1 CE. I'm pretty sure that of these four Motorstorm indeed suits me best, but I don't want to see any more racing games this year.

Apparently Sony didn't have the balls to allow German residents access to a Resistance demo. The pricks. Which means all you can get right now, right here, are the racers, the Blast Factor demo and the Lemmings demo.
The Blast Factor demo is entertaining for maybe 90 seconds. Then it's over and nags you to buy the full version. Seriously.
The Lemmings "Starter pack" is just the tutorial. Hardly fun at all.

There really ought to be something else, something a little more substantial. I could go for a single-dungeon Oblivion demo, or maybe a ten-minute excerpt from that Monster Kingdom thing. Heck I'd play even a Genji demo.

good guess :)

I'll bite:
There wasn't enough demand to outstrip supply. That's what makes it look "bad" for those so inclined. OTOH in absolute terms those are effin brilliant first-day numbers. 600k units moved on day one would have been called a very successful launch day had it happened in the US IMO. It's just played down because of the supply/demand ratio.

the only place where it has been determined bad was France... which was abysmal, evidently.

other than that I made no reference to good or bad re: 600k, just noted that it is below expectations of the million as reported by CNN/Money.

We can each read the articles (if you speak French ;), I do not) and form our own assumptions.

im embarrassed by motorstorm online

what kind of lobby is that? you can only enter a race if is status is "idle"..... BUT YOU CAN ONLY KNOW WHICH SERVER IS IDLE IF YOU ENTER IT. so you enter and leave servers by the dozens until you find some.
So as a result i have spent the last hour trying to have a race.

When i finally enter one (with luck), i chose my car in the most slow possible way. It actually loads the cars for you to chose. NICE, if it didn't take 15seconds to load.
so yeah, im so sick of trying to play that i have my surround sound on mute because i listened the songs so much.

I must be spoiled by my Pc-online experience :(

This is definitely a first... PS3 is in stock in a few stores i've seen (PCWorld in High Street Ken for one), on launch day... Whether this is due to a good supply or a low demand, it's all to be seen. Fact of the matter, it took me months to get hold of a PS2 when it came out...

Launched today in Norway.

Sony Centre had 30 people waiting at midnight.

I went by 6 of the biggest retailers in Oslo (capital city), asked around a bit (i was quite tempted, as i had recieved some extra cash, but mostly because i was curious), 5 of them had a good amount of PS3's in, talked to some of the store clerks, most of them said that except for pre-orders they sold very few, if at all except for pre-orders.

6th store had recieved 25 PS3's, and where selling it at 5000 NOK (1000 NOK less than normal retail price.) and was sold out.

Oh, and 6 norwegian kroner = $1

Well after seeing through the years how Germany censor games or forbids selling them, I woulnd't put much blame on Sony.

do as I and many others do, create different acounts and assign them to USA / JAPAN and take Belgium or the netherlands or UK for europe

I bit the bullet yesterday and picked one up, opted for the hdmi cable and Resistance / Genji as my first games.

Unwrapping it felt great, the PS3 looks good, feels good and feels like an expensive piece of kit... was tempted to leave it but set it up, XMB was as the PSP, nothing really special. Wireless internet was easy to set up.

Resistance looks good and plays well, genji looks awesome but haven't really played yet. The sun came up and washed out my projector making it hard to see...I gave up and went to bed (had been up for ~48hrs staring at LCD screens for a project)... this morning firmware update to 1.6 and then some gaming... is good :D

I was hoping that after yielding all my personal data to this new bastion of parental control, the information that I'm 29 and eligible to convert my own real-world money into horse armor with a waggle of the Sixaxis would somehow also enable unfiltered content access.

I know full well that Germany's media law makes stuff harder, but I was hoping worldwide digital distribution networks would change that. What's the cost of an age verification once per account?

It's easy for me to walk into a store and buy an import version of an 18+ rated game on physical media. I want it to be even easier to download the demo, not harder.

Anyone found a source with real sales data ? I read the CNN link and it seems the numbers are just analyst estimates. Maybe it will be easier to find Hardware sales thru games sales next week ?

Well, after much debating over the lack of 60hz support for SD resolutions, I'm going to opt for the US machine. I needed a US DVD player anyway to replace my aging modded XB (no room left for it to be out) so it seems like the best decision.

Now I just have to wait a week or so longer than expected and lose any staff discount I would be getting on buying the UK one.
