Europe: can it be cracked?

I believe that diversity is a function of userbase. The more market you have the more diverse your library. The reason being the higher your userbase the greater the likelihood your console can support a game that targets a sub group of gamers.
Yes, if you hit a certain 'critical mass' of userbase. In the early days, the best way to ensure diversity is through 1st party titles.

I thought this would be appriopriate for this thread.

crackdown would be in lower position had there not been an invitation to halo 3 alpha multiplayer IMO. no doubt about that IMO.

Where do European sales charts come from? I thought there were no such things, and usual the UK chart is the only one people get to see.

There isn't that many copies of the game that includes the multiplayer beta invite. The game has gotten good reviews and it's a really fun game, that's why it's listed high in the charts IMO

I do think the Full game needs to get in your hands to "get it" though. I didn't get it really when I saw the shots/vids. The demo shed some light but still not quite. Now after playing the full game for a bit I'd say it's a top5 game on xb360 no question.

It's good to see the title selling in EU regardless of what got it in their homes in the first place.:D

How did Halo sell in EU?

What I hate about these charts is the inclusion of the handheld systems. Different games are being playied and bought for handhelds than for consoles, they offer different experiences and they dont belong on the same competition. All we want to see are what games are the most demanded for consoles and these charts are ruining it

For example release DS's Mario Bros and the likes on a PS3 or a 360 and lets see if that's going to increase their hardware sales....

Those looks like Chart-Track's UK chart. There are no European charts.

The more developers go multi-platform the more affect individual exclusives will have on consumer choice.

As said, only if they're must-have titles like MGS or Final Fantasy or such caliber. But how many such titles are there out there? Not many IMO.

If I were Nintendo or Microsoft I would penetrate the European Market by packing in Marlboro Lights and Techno Music in the box. Zing!!

Seriously, things will change. I am sticking with the assessment that the PS3 will lose at least 20 percent of the previous cycle's market share and Nintendo's bring more leisure gamers to the market. Microsoft will gain because of both these predictions. The 2nd and 3rd place folk only have to not fuck up.

You can't count this way and you should know this. PS3 has fewer total games so they have fewer total FPSs than the 360 . But PS3 has proportionately more. OTOH, XBOX (the original) obviously had many more FPS titles relative to the total number of titles released on the system.

Do you think anyone that wants to buy a console will ask at the counter "show me the console with proportionately more First Person Shooters please". Afaik there is 2 FPS games out now for the PS3 compared to 10 or so for the 360? Obviously the XBOX is still the king of FPS games. Maybe the PS3 can change this but it´s not in the cards or the nearby future.

And why is the numbers advantage the 360 enjoys in FPS games more important than the numbers advantage it enjoys in just about every other genre of game? It has more games, period. At least 4 times more. (Anyone have an accurate count?)

The only way for your position to be validated is if the 360 not only had a large number of FPSs, but also had lower representation of other types of games as a result. Otherwise more titles in any genre is a good thing.

Most don't view diversity of a game library based on actual percentages of games representing a genre. Diversity is usually a perception based soley on critically acclaimed and well selling games. Most people don't have the desire to look up the numbers necessary to make a objective observation on diversity.

The xbox is judged as being overloaded with shooters because most of its well known games are shooters while you can rattle off dozens of well known PS2 games from genres not typically well represented on the xbox. When you have a high userbase or own a large chunk of the existing market you are going to attract more devs who are willing to try new types of games. Limited marketshare or userbase will practically gaurantee a library with games concentrated within genres that typically sell well and appeal to a broader range of gamers as devs need a higher attached rate to ensure profitability unless you're are a Nintendo who has a nack for producing numerous diverse and popular first party titles.

Your still trying to argue about this?

If your going to make a statement about a console "only" having FPS games, then you look at the % compared to the total game library of that console

If your going to count numbers like in your example there, the X360 is obviously the king of all genres, because the PS3 has like 20 titles out vs 200

I would suggest that the X360 is known mostly for:

Gears of War
Call of Duty
Ghost Recon
Madden
Oblivion
Rainbow Six
Fight Night
Perfect Dark
Lost Planet
Dead Rising
Need for Speed
Saints Row
Crackdown

In other words: Mostly shooters, EA staple franchises, sandbox gang-land games, and action in general, with Oblivion being the main exception. This was probably what MS wanted in order to hook their traditional fanbase at the beginning of the lifecycle: People that love the Xbox brand enough to spend $400 on a console. They've been very successful with this.

Now you can slowly see them bringing out stuff that might appeal to the different segments like Forza 2, Guitar Hero 2, Blue Dragon, Banjo 3, and Mass Effect. It's hard to say whether they can broaden the X360 appeal with these titles, but it probably can't hurt.

My point stands, history shows that the XBOX is a FPS platform. There are more FPS games on the XBOX that there are on the PS2. And history is very very very likely to repeat itself. Lets return to this thread in 4 years and see which platform has the most FPS games. And as i said noone cares about a certain percentage of a genre, they just want the strongest FPS platform which normally would be the one with MOST GAMES.

And the Wii is doomed to be a kiddie platform with mostly first-party games and crappy ports of like 20% of the multiplatforms?

Well... yes but there is a fair chance that they will break trough to more custormers now if they can keep the cool factor going.
