what is that white thing in the middle of the Xbox360 controller? This has probably been said before but it just occured to me that the 360 name might come from the controller having a track ball on it? Could that be it?

No. if it had a trackball they wouldn't put it where the white circle is, it would be almost impossible to use it, you'd really have to stretch your left thumb to use it, and you can't use with right thumb, because the right analog stick is blockking it. Other ways are just too weird. It's not a trackball.
