DOAX2 - E3 2K6 GT Interview.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=10614&type=mov&pl=game

There is particularly one part that surprised me greatly...

Interviewer: Back in the last generation you said that you chose to develop for the XBOX because it was the most powerful platform available at the time. Now you've continued developing for the 360, do you still believe that's the case? Is the 360 the more powerful console between that and the Playstation 3 and if so is that why you chose 360 for your games?

Itagaki: So of course, right now as it stands, 360 is the most powerful system because PS3 isn't out yet. But when it does come out, I'm sure it's going to be a good system, but the difference is not as great as going from the previous generation to the current generation.

So generally speaking amongst the development community, we say that if the new machine is 4 times more powerful, any old developer can show the difference. But when the difference is only maybe double, only a few talented developers can show off the difference.

Going from PS1 to PS2 that was a big - y'know, leap forward. There was more than 4 times (y'know 10 fold) so then anyone can show the big difference and people were surprised and impressed by it. Going from 360 to PS3 is not as great of a leap.

Interviewer: Do you see yourself making games for the PlayStation 3?

Itagaki: Yes, I'm definitely seeking for various opportunities to do something with the sysytem. And now that PS3 system is almost ready, I am able to analyse the machine.

What were you surprised by? Itagaki is now the head man of Tecmo as a whole not just Team Ninja anymore. "Tecmo" has always made Playstation games, it's the Team Ninja games that have been Xbox exclusive. And that team has announce nothing but X360 games so far.

I didn't like the first one, but I know a number of people that did including some girls (well, adult women actually). Suprised me.

Why does he make the comparison going from PS1 --> PS2, but then makes a counter point going from 360 --> PS3. Should he be going from PS2 --> Xbox?

I think he was just speaking generally. It doesn't appear that he's had much time with a PS3 at all.

Sounds like he will make time soon...

Will a tecmo game come out? or a Team Ninja game come out? Or no game?
Either way, I cant say I'm a fan of his games, so no lost sleep over it for me.

Pretty sure he's just referring to Tecmo as a whole. As mentioned before, TN has only announced X360 titles.

It's like a barbie game! Or just maybe your lady friends are um... hm... :p

That reasoning doesnt always work. EA hasnt officially announced any PS3 titles, atleast on their website. Why dont we just wait and see what happens before somebody says "wishful thinking" and another person says "betrayal" ;)

Well, there's a whole thread on Madden on PS3 with a developer interview to boot. There is also Fight night Round 3 (er...3.5?). Websites aren't always correct, but that's enough about EA...*shrug*

I hope Tecmo makes a new Fatal Frame for PS3, my all time fav horror game series.
Absolutely! Fatal Frame 2 == greatest horror game ever. I just fear it may be too frightening with the stupendous power of PS3

Having a nice surround sound system does alot more in my opinion then any visuals for a game like that :)

edit, found some interview tidbits. Grabed a couple key things.

IGN: Is the game running on the Dead Or Alive 4 engine? Is it being altered or improved or changed from that engine?

Itagaki: It's not running on the DOA4 engine. It's not a brand new engine but it's a heavily modified engine, with many new parts to it. Among other things, this game has self-shadowing, whereas DOA4 didn't.

IGN: Which mini-games from the video are in the game itself? There were many potential games there -- jetski, floatation device, running, waterslide and tug of war games, to name a few.

Itagaki: All of them will be in the game.

IGN: The first game had really simple mechanics. It was it easy to get into and play, which gave it a certain likeability. Will the mechanics change or be altered this time around?

Itagaki: I'm going to make it a little more challenging because the first version, particularly the volleyball play, was too easy. That forced the volleyball games to be over-extended. It was had to finish a game. It's kind of awkward to have a volleyball game where you're rallying for more than a minute.

IGN: Will the game be online in other aspects, such as the volleyball?

Itagaki: Yes.

IGN: One-on-one? Two-on-two?

Itagaki: One on one. You know, technically, we can easily make a two-on-two volleyball game. But I don't think it will be fun to play.

IGN: Was there anything else new about the game that you want to talk about that we haven't covered?

Itagaki: The game is going to be a great game. I won't disappoint you. Maybe you have forgotten about the jetski?

IGN: Is it a racing game? That would be cool. One of my favorite games ever was Wave Race 64 on Nintendo 64. How does it play? Are there tricks, or is it pure racing?

Itagaki: To answer your question, simply, it's like that game.

IGN: So it has tricks and jumping and all that?

Itagaki: I think those are good ideas, but what's most important that when you ride through the wave it feels really good just doing that. When you do tricks and all that it slowed down the speed. I don't think you'll have time to do tricks during a race. By the way, the jet ski game will be four player. It could change, but it's likely to be four player.

Doesnt seem nearly as mundane as the origonal on paper at least.

Not a big fan of Temco. But if the TeamNinja team develop games on PS3 then it would actually be more of a shocker to me.

Tecmo's support of PS3 is a given, they've already announced games IIRC. Team Ninja's is not, that's why these questions are asked. When he's asked about Wii, he talks about how he's spoken to his colleague on another Tecmo team about their Wii game etc. When he's asked about PS3, he seems to be talking about himself personally.

Anyway, he seems to have so much to juggle now on 360 that it's hard to see him bringing something to PS3 in the immediate future.

He's not the only one juggling. :devilish:

I hope he fixes how the game handles the swimsuits. It was a pain to put suits from the current inventory back into the storage (one at a time), and there was the thing with the computer players filling up their inventory with costumes you'd already collected with them (as they'd wear it when you play as someone else), so giving gifts was useless after awhile. They should just have it so you can either directly access all the inventory items or have the computer players not have their inventories altered (except for gifts) while playing as another person.

er... "I don't play this game" :?:

Cool, seems like it could be the "Summer Games" of this generation. Except with practially naked, well-endowed, underage girls of course. ;)

I wonder why he is wanting to make PS3 games. PS2 had much more market share than PS3 will but he did not make any good PS2 games. Maybe Tecmo's Xbox360 software sales are not so great. Maybe Microsoft made special deal for him to make DOA3 and DOA4 for Xbox only and deal is over. But it is a interesting statement. Also I think he say he is like talented developer who can show power difference of PS3.
