Do you think there will be a mid gen refresh console from Sony and Microsoft?

They can reduce the open world density if they want 60 fps. Divide the number of NPC by two or three for example.

They are rumors too but much more credible than a random guy posting something inside the PS5 Pro era thread. And I verified the post history of the guy, he only post in and Steam Deck OLED thread, Switch 2 TS2039 Digitalfoundry thread and Xbox OT thread being pro ABK merger...
Reducing NPC density is not very likely to make the full difference between a 16ms and a 33ms frametime. Plus at some point, you are actively impeding the developer's vision of the game. Yes, you could take out all the trees in The Witcher 3 to make performance much better, but it's not gonna be the same experience...

And yes, I agree Kepler is more reputable than many other leakers out there, but I still dont think we should talk as if his leaks are gospel. Not an unimpeachable source by any means.

I'm glad you think it's that easy.

Did I say this is the the only things they can reduce? They can reduce whatever it takes. On consoles we often see settings under low PC settings if this is needed do it.

Again this is a matter of choice, some will prefer play at 60 fps. If you think it is better to play at 30 fps because this is the vision of the developer it is your choice. Many game are showed using the fidelity mode, anyone can choose to play at 30 fps. For example one of the biggest videogame french youtuber is Julien Chièze and he only plays at 30 fps if he have the choice.

Did I say you said it was?

They can just render the sky if they want 60fps.

This is not me saying they need render only this on screen. Between only render the sky and reduced settings there is a tons of option and all developers out of Gotham City and Ark Remake find a way to do a performance mode. There will probably be other games with game design making 60 fps impossible on current gen console but if it is possible developer find a way to do it like with Jedi Survivor and Plague Tale Requiem.

7700xt is a 4070 without the RT performance, so 56-60CUs and 2ghz with proper RT support would be a 4070.

7800xt is a 4070ti withou the RT performance, so 60CUs with 2.5ghz with proper RT support would be a 4070ti.

So... one of the two. The interesting this is whether the AI chiplet appears, and whether Sony has a denoiser/upscaler specifically for it. If so they'd be smart to open source it so devs could implement it easily, giving third parties a chance to show off the PS5 Pro. Knowing Sony they won't do that, because proprietary things come first and money comes after that somehow.

A 7800XT has 60CU's and is 83% faster than the 6600XT that's closet to PS5.

Reduce the clock speed to get it's power consumption down from 252w it consumes and there's your PS5 Pro GPU.

They can also reduce RT features and we know RT can be CPU demanding.

Regarding frame rate, back when pc monitors were mainly 60hz, switching to a console 30hz experience wasn’t the end of the world esp for me, as my Kuro plasma had much better motion than my lcd based monitors. The trade off kinda evened things out.

Now that I’m at 175hz for my monitor, trying to play a 60 or god forbid 30hz game on my X1X is just painful. Feels like the games are broken and juddery. Same qd oled tech in both panels btw.

I wonder if the pro console has a dual purpose this time. The first being to obviously deliver a more powerful machine. The second being to serve as a live test bed for technologies they plan to adopt for ps6. The new leak from Kepler says the machine has 64 cus with only 60 active.

Nah the 7800XT is more aligned to the 3080 in raster performance. The 4070Ti is comfortably ahead.

The 7700XT meanwhile is also quite a bit slower than the 4070.

I expect the Pro to land around the 7800XT level which is to say roughly 4070 level or a little faster, but still slower than the 4070Ti. In RT it's anyones guess. Certainly it will be an impressive turn around from AMD if they manage to match Ada's RT capabilities in RDNA 3.5.

It doesn't make much sense to spend the engineering hours to shrink the old Zen2 core to 4nm when Zen4 is already made on that process 🤔

But I guess they need to hold back as this is only a rumoured mid-gen upgrade.

I suppose that depends on when the specs were Pro were nailed down.

Rumours of dev kits being shipped out now tells me the specs have been nailed down for 6+ months, which means certain options simply might not have been available to them back then.

This is why I don't buy any of the RDNA4 rumours, as RDMA3 was likely still fresh out of AMD's door when they nailed things down and RDNA4 was years away.

There is no rumor of RDNA 4 GPU but a RDNA 3 GPU mixed with partial RDNA 4 functionnalities like the PS5 GPU is a mix between a RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 GPUs.

But in the end PS5 is basically RDNA2 tech according to some devs. Based on Kepler PS5 Pro is RDNA3.5 architecture + new RT units from RDNA4 (missing a few things like the new scheduler from RDNA4, but it will supposedly get the most important new RT units). Sony could say PS5 Pro is "RDNA4 based" the same way PS5 is "RDNA2 based".

There are plenty of BS 'RDNA4' claims on X.

I personally don't think it will have any RDNA4 features.

It'll be a neutered 7800XT powering it.

I also think giving it much better ML support will be a bigger win than faster RT will as it should allow for ML based upscaling.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of model Sony can come up with. Something on a par with DLSS seems unlikely given Nvidia's huge head start and specialism in AI, but if Intel can create the XeSS model then I'd assume Sony might be capable of something similar.

If the pro soc is not going to have ada size caches and features like SER just adding bvh traversal hardware would be closer to ampere right? Same goes for the AI hardware, not sure expecting to match nvidias current gen tensor cores on AMDs first attempt is logical but I don't think matching these is as important, adas tensor cores are probably overkill for just upscaling.

Given Sony patent everything they think up, I generally don't expect most patents to end up in actual products, but SIE did patent a DLSS-like upscaling method a couple of years back. Sticking weird tech in a PS5 Pro would be consistent with the hardware supporting checkerboarding on PS4 Pro. Every little helps and FSR isn't quite doing it.. yet.
