Diablo 3 - Gamepad Edition

I finally got my dagger-wielding midget fetish army. I'm almost ready to replicate homerdog's build! Unfortunately, I don't get piranhas until level 61.

Question: Is it worth creating a Barbarian? It seems like ranged builds/characters are the way to go. Melee characters seem like they would get overwhelmed easily by higher level mobs.

Barbarians, Crusaders and Monks take 30% less damage than the other classes. There are also many different ways to mitigate the damage, depending on your items and your playstyle. My Barbarian is built for being in the midst of chaos, the more mobs the better for me.

For leveling, sure... up to a point. I think once you reach level 40 or so the drops are good enough and you're better rerolling at the mystic (if needed)

Yeah I agree at later levels. Especially since most crafted items don't roll as many affixes as dropped. After playing a long time you have a lot of legendary and set items available from the Blacksmith as well so that helps along the way.

@NRP: the crusader is a nice mix of mid range and melee combat and I have decked him such that he never runs out of health or Wrath (mana). He regenerates life and Wrath for everything he does, so, yeah, like Malo's Barb : more mob=more health and wrath !
Yeah, he can clear a mob in no time.
But,yes, in co op games, I have to make sure I run ahead of others, otherwise Wizards and DHs clear everything with their ranged attacks. I have set one of my abilities such that I can make a giant leap towards the enemy intermittently.

Actually, mobs are my crusader's worst nightmare. I had built up some courage in the first Act and decided to increase the difficulty level to Expert to then get killed for the first time ever in the game.

Then some unique monster called Septis, with a Vortex ability killed me like 5 times when its mob surrounded me --I had very few potions and sold them to buy some magic, rare items, so that made things worse.

After criticising vanilla Diablo 3 for the PC soooo much in diabloii.net forums back in the day, I gotta admit that this game is much better than I expected, it's up there with Diablo 2, addiction wise.

Crusader is actually quite a bit more fun to play on console than PC due to direct control. The slash skill lets you attack and keep moving at the same time which isnt possible on PC. It makes you feel like an unstoppable tank smashing though mobs :devilish:

on a side note, does anyone know how mic comms is supposed to work in this game? If your mic is active, everyone in your game can hear you, or do you have to be in a party?

Ok, since I've been inspired by Malo and Renegade, I've rolled a Barbarian and tonight I will start a Crusader too. Per specwarGP2's recommendation, I've been stashing some good low level gear to help the grinding process for the new characters. Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions. This game is pretty fun.

@NRP: hell yeah ! Go for it :p !

BTW, Diablo died again last night. Now in Act V, doesn't seem any special other than the change in graphics. My level66 Crusader doesn't stop for anything at all so I can't tell if the new monsters are anything special. Even at Expert difficulty, which is what I have been playing all along, I don't really have to pay much attention. The Crusader is just unstoppable !
I think the COTA grinding early on gave me a pretty big stat boost !

Crusader is quite tough and if you're keeping up your equipment you're going to have an easy time with Expert. Master and above is where it starts to get remotely challenging, there's a definite gap between them you'll notice fast. Torment is something you need to actually work towards with gear and skill changes. When you hit 61+ equipment, your power level goes way up as the stats are much higher for RoS gear.

Act V brought a lot of interesting events and mobs into the game, much more than previous act's imo.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and this is coming from a Diablo 2 hardcore fan and extremely knowledgeable... when now I feel like a noob on Diablo 3.

I haven't got the Slash skill yet, I am just level 10 and I levelled up a little faster thanks to increasing the difficulty to Expert (really like how they define the gear and skills you need for every difficulty level) --Master and Torment, I am eagerly waiting for yah'. :devilish:

This game is even better than Diablo 2 as of now!! (only missing a character, after
he dies -Deckard Cain, I hope he returns in an angelic form at least-
).

It may sound crazy, but that's how it is. When I bought Diablo 3 on day one -PC- I started a monk and hated it more than I expected, but now... it's superb good. Blizzard people make masterpiece after masterpiece.

As for your question, I haven't tried multiplayer yet so I can't say. Still, someone joined a game of mine and the game automatically brought them into a party -Xbox One version-.

Btw, are you getting items through the Mailbox via friends?

I have about 200 friends on the Xbox Live and they sent me quite a few items. Some very low level legendaries are waiting for me to use them at level 11!

I am handling expert with some nice magic and rare items on Expert, but I might increase the difficulty level to Master when I get to level 11, 'cos they gave me some very nice equipment for that level, actually.

I try to pay them back and send them some nice stuff, but I haven't got a lot of stuff to share for now.

Additionally, I try to keep the weapons that fit the Crusader the most. Does the game works like Diablo 2 in that regard, where the different classes had attack speed bonuses with some specific weapons, like the Paladin with flails, and the Druid with Scythes and so on? :smile2:

Unless console versions differ greatly from PC, Monks, and WDs are the dominating classes end-game if you have the gear.

Well, there are class specific weps. Only crusaders can use flails, wizards can use wands, demon hunters bows/xbox/handbows etc.

You have some nice friends. I sent all mine legs that I no longer need... only one person sent me something useful back

Wait, you have to mail people stuff? I thought the game auto generated loot and mailed it, just as a social feature. Everyone is higher level than me, so what would the point be for me to mail out stuff?

Mostly mindless gameplay, poor UI,confusing stats system and almost no documentation (digital version) but if you enjoy orthoganal view hack and slashers then it's a lot of fun.

I would argue that Sacred 2 was a lot better at being an action RPG but let down by a far less robust engine. Diablo III is much better at being a hack and slash action game but let down by an unclear stats system and some frustrating design decisions. It is also surprisingly linear.

Definitely getting my moneys worth from it despite the flaws (I am late into Act II, level 32).

Cheers

When you find a legendary, there is a chance that a mystery gift for your friend might drop, which you can mail.

You can also mail gold, jewels and gear from your inventory as well
